Will our March 4 game against 8-15 Florida Gulf Coast -- #269 RPI -- help us with the Selection Committee?

gulf coast is Division II, right?

they were added since a team backed out of the blue and gold tourney at the last minute to get all their home games, I believe a similar thing happened to Depaul that forced them to add Gulf Coast earlier this year.

But do we expect that the Selection Committee will look favorably on the fact that we've schedule the cupcake of cupcakes as our second to last game of the season? And how will it affect our RPI? I think we're around 30 right now.

I suspect it will have no impact at all. The game was thrown in as a revenue generator and little more - perhaps as an opportunity for a "live" practice just before post-season begins. The only way that game even exists in teh eyes of teh selection committee is if we lose.

FGC will help us from the perspective of w-L record as it is a Div I and the game does count for RPI purposes (albeit slightly negatively). On the other hand the Chaminade game does not count for RPI purposes as it is a Div II team. Thus we are 15-5 for RPI purposes right now (not the overall 16-5 as is the overall record. Thus, if MU goes 4-4 in its remaining BE games and loses its first BE tourney game MU would be 19-10 without the FGC game. With a win over FGC, a 20-10 record for RPI. Remember that the record the committe sees is the record for RPI purposes. Win FGC in that scenario and the record is 20-10 with a 10-8 BE record. Food for thought.

If we don't finish at least .500 in the conference it won't matter in the least. In that case, we cannot get a bid unless we win the BE Tournament, which is impossible to think about at this point.

Pretty sure that this buy game was dropped in here so it would positively affect our "last 10" stat which is usually punished by the tough BE schedule.

Yeah, it's only one game, but 7-3 looks that much better than 6-4, right?

I think Crean putting this game here shows that he knew MU would be a middle of the road Big East team. We expected a lot out of this team, because we do not realize how good the Big East is.

Crean did not put them there because he knew we were middle of the pack, this game won't even register in our record to the selection committee, Gulf Coast is a Division II independent. As stated earlier, this game is for money reasons, a team dropped out from our Blue & Gold tourney, and it was a scramble to find someone to play to get all of our home games, nothing more.

Someone (Maine?) dropped out of the B&G. We already had an agreement with FGC to play and we honored it by playing it at the end of the year.

All true...but the reason it's at the end of season is so it could help us in the "Record in the Last 10 Games" criteria of the Selection Committee.

IF you Lose you might as well plan the NIT Home game.

If we win by less than 15 we take a seeding hit

If we win by more than 15 it does nothing for us.

What a waste of a game for the end of the year. I truly think that Florida Gulf Coast is going to be a great way to prepare for the Big East tourney

No. A great way to prepare for the Big East tourny and the NCAA tourny is to play 18 tough Big East conference games. It really doesnt matter when they play FGC. If anything it helps with a win in our last 10 games but its really a non-issue one way or another except for those that like to bash.

We're honoring our obligation by playing this game, and 3/4 was the only date that fit. As a result, I don't think the fact we're playing it will reflect poorly on us. As for the result, a win won't do much, other than help us in the win-loss column, and potentially give us a tune-up game, coming out of GTown.

BTW, saw last night on College Gamnight that the older guy who's name escapes me, spent a day with the committee recently and feels that the criteria being emphasized this year is going to actually be record in the last 12 games, as opposed to 10, as well as SOS, with overall RPI not being quite as important. Who you have gone out and played/beat on the road is going to be a major point of emphasis. Obviously the games/SOS are there, but we obviously want to start winnng a few more road games. Not including BE tournament games, so far we are 3-1 in the final 12 games on our schedule. Obviously a couple of those could drop off once you include BET games we play.

The NIT bids usually come out between 9-10 pm MKE time. Opps, that wasn't the question, was it. It probably should have been.
