I believe the NBA hit it right with the plan to play the quick season in August (when I was suggesting an"August Madness") and then have things done by October 12. That is the window when it is almost certain Covid-19 is NOT an issue. The whole key will be to see if it starts back up hard by November to prevent the upcoming season. Hoping for the best.

lawdog77

I thought I heard the NBA draft will be right after that as well. Is that true?

Wow, if you know Covid isn't an issue from Aug to Oct please send me your stock tips. Unfortunately we don't know what the trajectory of the virus is.

Talk was Christmas. Not sure if that will still be the case.

So do you have a solution?  Or are you going to do your usual thing and criticize using your middle school vocabulary?

The problem is a saturation of sports is coming.

So, what will we have this October at the same time?

NFL regular schedule
College Football
Baseball Playoffs
NBA Finals
NHL?
US Open (tennis)
US Open (golf)
Tour de France
NASCAR
Indy Car Racing
Kentucky Derby/Peakness/Belmont
Big city marathons every weekend

And on and on and on.

Going to water down everyone's TV ratings (I'm assuming they will have no fans, no gate).

Baseball probably has it right ... the owners understand this and are asking the players to take about 50% of pro-rated salaries.  The players want 100% of pro-rated.  They might not agree and not have a season.  MLB might be the winner among delayed sports in 2020.

The Sultan

How would MLB be the winner?  Right now they are at an impasse with the players and looks like they may not have any season.  If that happens, they are screwed.

NHL is skipping to playoffs are you referring to the next season starting in October?

That might be a problem for the leagues/organizers, but it is not a problem for consumers like me.

The players have agreed to not get paid if they are not playing.  So, they are not getting paid now.  That is $4B/year saved.

If they play with the pro-rated salaries, MLB owners lose more money than not playing.  They are better off canceling the season.

(remember that 66% to 75% of the MLB revenue is gate and concessions.  That is not happening if they play in empty stadiums.  Football is more 50/50.  College Football is more 80% to 90% is gate/concessions.  They lose boatloads trying to play in empty stadiums.)

They will need to have preseason games.

I to the point where my life is fine without sports. Unless you like to bet on sports events, it is not going to matter much how much sports is on TV.

The bolded is not even close to being accurate.

Gate revenue is about 30%.  Other stadium revenue is another 10%, but some of that may be earned even if there aren't games.  2/3 of their revenue comes from national and local television revenue and licensing.

And actually your NFL numbers are off too.  If you look at the Packers revenue, about 60% came from national television deals while the rest was local.  But that local revenue includes iteams like sponsorships which aren't dependent on gate receipts.

Per usual, you've made the mistake that people wouldn't actually do a simple Google search when you decide to make up data.

What MLB is doing is playing chicken with the players, hoping that they will cave facing a year without income.  They will likely win eventually, but who knows?

They also tried to play the rank and file players against the big money guys by suggesting the sliding scale for pro-rated pay (Trout would get like 25% of his 36M, but rookies would get the full 50%).

wadesworld

Since our president and the NFL have both stated we will have full sports arenas come September, why not just have the 8 regular season games in a bubble then get that home court advantage rolling for the Playoffs?
