Look, I am not a Derrick basher by any means, but the biggest reason he started for Buzz and Wojo is because there were no better options.   I mean he started over John Dawson and a freshman Duane Wilson.

In the last 19 seasons, Marquette has failed to make the post season three times.  Two of those seasons was with Derrick as the starting PG.  I don't disagree with AE's assessment, but let's not act like the choice of him as a PG was out of a position of strength.  In fact, this tournament shows what his role should have been at MU.  And that's not a 30+ mpg guy like he was his last two years at MU.

The problems with Derrick at Marquette were always more with the cast around him. You need those kinds of players, but you also need the stars to play those roles. The closest Derrick had were Jamil, Gardner, and Carlino, none of whom were NBA ready.

Agree, Derrick was one of the 5 best players on the team, not his fault.

Favorite part of the last two tbts has been diener using his fouls to get out of the game faster.

As an absolute diener lover I'm saving this post in case it ever does happen.

Save away. Chick is 100% correct. Bank it.

Derrick Wilson's "issues" at MU were never really his fault. He has a very specific set of skills which you can build around (MU didn't) or can serve as a high value 6th man (didn't have enough talent to do that). What Derrick does is elite and what he doesn't do he's bad at.

Joe is using Derrick correctly and has the talent around him to maximize the teams outcomes.

And there is a reason Travis left MU to go back to Italy, one was money the other was he isn't a grinder in the coaching sense. He might be good at it but that doesn't mean he wants it.

If MU wins the TBT, can we safely say it's the biggest Marquette win of the Wojo era?

Best asset we have for Tuesday night is none other than Derrick Wilson.   Has the  athleticism  needed to slow down Keene.

He may play about 10 minutes. Jamil may be our best asset, Buycks may be our best asset, DJO may be our best asset. Derrick will not be.

Derrick's defense has been pretty to watch.  His fitness, his hustle, his intelligence on D all show up well in this type of competition.  On offense, he's being used appropriately - which is to screen and rebound.

He was a victim of circumstance at MU, but I admire him for making a living at professional basketball for 4 years now having started that with a very limited offensive skill set.  And - based on his international stats - he's getting better each year.

I was hoping to see him guard iso-Joe.

One of his best games at MU was taking the place of Junior when he was suspended in Madison. Wilson's main job was to harass Taylor all over the court while others generated offense.

As others have said, if he was a 7th man that came in to play 15 minutes of tough defense, he'd be looked at much differently.

Derrick will be be a key help in hopefully slowing up Keene.

But the biggest key imo is Jamil. There is rarely a team with guys that can match up with him effectively in this tournament and tomorrow is no different. If hes aggressive and feeling it I really love our odds of finally bringing home the title.

Which is what he did his first 2 seasons before being thrust into the starting PG role out of necessity.  Ultimate role player.

Yup, dude was gassed after only a few minutes. I would make fun of his beer belly, but at the same time, he's 38 years old and still playing basketball at a high level. I am in no place to judge when my two primary sports these days are golf and 16" softball.

OTOH, if Travis could bring six pack in a cooler and drink it during the game a la Walter Matthau in Bad News Bears, then there is a chance.

It says Diamond Stone is on the roster for Sideline Cancer, but I don't remember him on the floor at all against OE. Is he on the team?

MomofMUltiples

He played in the first round, when I was really rooting for Sideline to beat Team Hines because TH bitched so much about not being seeded higher in the TBT.  Don't know why he didn't play yesterday.
I mean, OK, maybe he's secretly a serial killer who's pulled the wool over our eyes with his good deeds and smooth jumper - Pakuni (on Markus Howard)

Also, don't forget Derrick's big time dunks.

I can honestly say in my 30ish years of MU fanship, that dunk was in the top 5 most astonished I've been during a MU play, up there with a few things Wade did.

Gotcha thanks for the info.

Stone played in the opener against the Team Hines guys, matching up against Ethan Happ.

Stone had a good game with 19 points, 6 boards and a couple blocks.  A surprising 3 of 10 from three.

He left near the end of that game, hasn't played during the next two games,  from what I've read is an injured achilles.

Galway Eagle

Out of curiosity does the winner host the tournament if they're connected with a location or is it just coincidence that Ohio St Alumni won and it was going to be played in Columbus?

Dont necessarily agree with that, Travis himself stated that he felt he had a few years of playing left in the tank and wanted to take advantage of them before they were gone.
