Looking forward to The Basketball Tournament. Our team has a Twitter page with current postings,  but  we are not listed on the Team Page for The tournament.

Why is the team not listed with the teams?  Don't they get in automatically for going to the finals last year?

I doubt this will happen.

Scheduled for Late July and August, so there is time for things to ease up.  Attendance improved last year, especially in the region the Golden Eagles played in, but it was still not great.  Most of the money comes from ESPN, so they would not take a beating by not having fans.

They haven't been listed the past two years because they earned their place based on hosting & past performance. If they want to compete, they will definitely be in the field. They're the returning runners-up and second winningest team in TBT history.

I agree, but not necessarily because of player safety, crowds, etc.  I think promoters are going to be hard-pressed to find the money to put on events like TBT this year, and ESPN has lost so much ad revenue at this point that they'll need to make cuts somewhere.  So unless this is literally the only sporting event happening in July/August, I think they'll (wisely) just bag it until 2021.  That's the beauty of an alumni event - no one's losing eligibility.

OTOH, a friend of mine recently watched the National Cornhole Championships and stock car drivers competing in a video race.  They can use programming and TBT is relatively cheap.

Marquette usually posts its team pretty late into the tbt voting. Not sure why they're that, as other automatic qualifiers are already posted.

The Golden Eagles team keeps posting social media .

However don't see their name on the application pool yet.  Maybe they are still lining up the team?

If they have a team, they will be in the field. They don't need to get voted in. They, along with Overseas Elite and Carmen's Crew, are the TBT blue bloods. No one is leaving them out, votes or no votes.

With all the posting the team is doing it seems like they are in the field.

Hopefully, they can put together the nucleus of the team they have had for the last few years. I think that chemistry really helps.

24 team tournament in one location over 10 days.  Must quarantine at location 14 days before tournament and if any team member tests positive the whole team is disqualified.

So these guys are going to stay in a hotel for 3 weeks and only one team will come away with a penny?

Count me as pessimistic this happens.

If you look at the crap that's on sports networks lately I'd think they would be queued up to pay for the hotels in order to make this tournament happen... just so they get new TV content.

While not every league can do what TBT is trying to do, I think it's a really smart way to manage their sport. Essentially quarantine everyone and have the entire process from start to finish done in under a month. Considering most people have been quarantining for longer than that already, it should be manageable for the athletes. Having one isolated location, mass testing, and a controlled environment is the best way to proceed.

Totally agree. All of the travel from past tournaments discouraged some players from playing. I can see more guys interested in this concept than the previous iteration.

Players on the roster so far include: Buycks, Jamil Wilson, Derrick Wilson, Mo Acker, Fischer with non Marquette guys Jarvis Williams and Elgin Cook returning.

I know Luke wanted to play last year but he has surgery and was unable to join. Will be interesting to see if anyone else is added. TBT likes to hide big player announcements. Diener is the one that I’m waiting on but he could always decide it was a crazy spring with Italy and decide to stay home.

I can’t imagine a guy who just retired after making $200M in salary alone (and who knows how much more in endorsements) and has made appearances on a number of TV shows as an analyst, including the NBA on TNT, would have any interest in quarantining himself for weeks to play for a chance at like $100K.

If he does it, it will be for love of the game. I would guess he wouldn't even take a salary, or would donate all of the winnings. I mean, Wade could guarantee the entire team the $2M win or lose, so it's not like money would be the motivator.

Plenty of guys who have made a lot more money than Henry come back for the competition. And even though TBT is nothing like the NBA, the competition is still pretty solid.

Yeah I just don’t see any appeal in quarantining myself for multiple weeks, being away from my family, etc. for really nothing more than some pickup basketball.

Everyone gets moved by different things. I feel the same as you, but I've had co-workers that would make more money by retiring but keep coming in because they love what they do and who they work with. I wouldn't begrudge him either way, but it wouldn't be the most shocking thing.

We saw Davante play a few years back when the TBT was in Peoria.

But he would be coming in from Japan, so that's quite a trip. He's a star there; maybe he doesn't really feel the need to participate.

Jamil Wilson has also done very well in the TBT format and glad we have him back.

The one thing our team has going for it is great team chemistry. The ball moves around well and the guys seem to get clean looks. Acker is still a very fun player to watch. Hopefully Diener is in enough shape to give some quality minutes, he really knows how to quarterback an offense with talented guys around him.

Our recent strong performance in this tournament  is sure to get a lot of attention. One of the nice things about having Luke on the team, is we now have an inside threat and that can really open things up for the all the long range bombers we have.

Wade would never be playing for the money (at least the prize money), and would definitely only be in for a few games.  But I have no doubt Li Ning would give him a nice check if he were to play, particularly because this event is taking place before any major pro sports kick off.  I'm also sure that many teams will utilize this platform to highlight the BLM cause, especially given that they're likely not restricted in the same way they would be by the NCAA, NBA, etc.

I like to think that the way a bunch of ex-MU players build a roster for a made-for-TV event won't influence the playing decisions of 16- and 17-year-old kids or their coaches.

I mean it’s all one program or “family” as Wojo likes to promote.

Also, Duane tweeted something along the lines of: hometown kid gets left off the roster again with some emojis.

I’m sure it’s not that big of a deal but this could be a small step in getting tight with his dad’s AAU program again

This year it probably wouldn't matter if they did. With only 24 teams, you'll need some serious heft just to get the invite.

Who's Duane going to supplant on the team? Travis? DJO? Buycks? Three guys who all have NBA pedigree (as bad as DJO's was)

Rowsey and Acker are better shooters, So not them.

Only one I'd suggest Duane replacing is Derrick Wilson (Omg I sound like Ners)

Golden Eagles are a 4 Seed.

They interviewed Travis Diener.  He's had back and forth conversations with D. Wade and he felt if not for Coronavirus, D. Wade would play with the team this year.  Still a 5% chance, but he does not think likely.

I think our team is under rated. Lots of fancy names on other teams. However, what we have going for our team is literally the entire team has played together now for many years. The one new addition is Luke , he is a known commodity to most of the team, and adds the inside big man dimension we have not had. Also the diverse fire power of our lineup creates a lot of problems for the other teams. We have guys who are great at the dribble drive penetration, we have long range bombers, and we move the ball extremely well to the open guy.

In this case slightly misleading.

We are the 4 seed. Every team was seeded 1-24. So we were rated 4th out of 24 and got a bye.

Didn't see this mentioned earlier in the thread (sorry if it was and I missed it), but ESPN will televise all 23 games.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2020/06/tbt-announces-2020-site-dates-and-multi-year-television-deal-with-espn.html

TBT and ESPN announced basic details of the 2020 tournament Thursday morning in a news release that indicated the two had agreed to “a new, multi-year, multi-platform rights extension." All 23 TBT games this summer will be televised by the sports network. Games will be played in the Nationwide Arena, a multipurpose facility that hosts Columbus Blue Jackets hockey games.

I believe the espn "networks" carried all the games last year as well.
But with multiple games occurring at the same time, many of the games were shifted to espn3, which required streaming.

I wonder if it'll be different this year as all the games will be at one location and it would be possible to televise each game on one of the espn primary on air channels.

Maybe I just have a vested interest because I have liked the concept/format since this thing started, but I really feel like this could be a ratings bonanza. People are starved for live sports.

Not that this has any bearing on anything, but I’m curious why the team doesn’t have a more creative nickname.  Most of the others seem to.  It’s kind of like how the mascot is just called “the golden eagle”.  Most other mascots I can think of have an actual name (Bucky, Bernie, Bango, etc).

They were one of the first big alumni teams, I think they just went for the easy name and stuck with it. I also wonder if it's somewhat deliberate as they are the generation that has always been Golden Eagles.

It still bugs me that their logo is of a bald eagle, not a golden eagle.

It's like having the nickname of "The Huskies" and having a Samoyed as your logo.

Well, it will have to be.  It's a respiratory disease and highly contagious.  If half the team is out 'injured' then we should look forward to nothing but exhibition games.

Hard to isolate everyone associated with the teams and their families.

Hards - I agree. A team needs to be banned when somebody tests positive because of the close contact inherent in the sport.

To me the more interesting question once the tournament begins is whether recent opponents should be banned as well. We know that there is a lag between contracting the virus and testing positive, and opponents in a basketball game are banging into each other, falling on top of each other and breathing all over each other.

I am desperate to see team sports again, but I worry that this could fall apart quickly.

At the NCAA level, you're 100% right. If a player or few players test positive, you certainly can't put them on the court with another team. And anyone they've been in close contact with (like all their teammates) will also need to quarantine.

If it's midseason, anyone they've played against recently will also need to quarantine for at least a few days, so any team they played against in the last week?

A couple positive tests at the big eight team MTEs could completely cripple the sport for weeks right in the heart of non-con play. Do you reschedule hundreds of games? Cancel them?

It's easier when you have pros that can be brought to one location, like the NBA at Disney or TBT, but none of that is an option for collegiate sports.

Luke gives the Golden Eagle TBT team the Big Man dimension it has not had in years past.  The other teams will have to respect his inside scoring ability which should really open things up for our bevy of long range bombers to get clean looks.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mo Charlo last year and delighted he is on the squad again.

I seem to remember that you have not been a big of fan of Luke. Try giving it an open mind this year.  He has been a very efficient offensive player for a long period of time and he has immense size the team needs (6-11 260)

Joe Johnson is still an absolute killer from the mid range and wings. He’s gonna be a problem even at his age. Jordan Crawford is 2 seasons removed from being a double digit scorer in the NBA and is a digit guy in the BBL. Big additions

LMAO. Gotta love when your hatred and biases come out into making you sound like a compete fool.

Mo Charlo is a nice addition, sure, but he peaked as a G League guy averaging 12-6 in a league that plays no defense about 7 years ago. He was averaging single digits in Japan his last pro seasons.  He’s in his mid/late 30s now.

Luke spent a few seasons on a upper tier team at the best league in Europe, and playing in the Euroleague/EuroCup. Now he’s moved to a starting role at a pretty good team in the Bundesliga and averaging 13 and 6 against very good competition in a league where all the top 6-8 teams have a few guys with NBA experience or potential. And he’s a decade younger.  Keep grinding that axe

The guy who came up with the Elam ending says it’s to find out who the best team in live ball situations is. Why? Part of basketball is and always has been getting to the free throw line. Disliked the Elam ending as it was. Hate this new part.

I don't think this needed to be added to the Elam game, but I always thought the best way to get rid of the b.s. fouling at the end of games was to give the ball back to the fouled team after the free throws.

I always thought letter of the law states it's an intentional foul which means 2 FTs and the ball

I don’t really consider either a mistake. Lamb is by far the better player and has had a better career. I think he was going UConn so MU’s chances weren’t great. NCAA championship and NBA player.

Newbill is good but not great player. I think people are enamored by the number of points he put up for Penn state. He was the best scorer on a bad team. Never made the NCAA and wasn’t drafted and been no where near an NBA roster.

Both players in front of him on the roster in Blue and Jamil both had a cup of coffee in the NBA.

If I’m trailing and the other team can get to the target score the next possession I’m using all 30 seconds I have to just try to dribble right into a defender over and over to keep getting free throws and the ball.

I’m glad Dakic likes the Elam ending. This way I know I’m not crazy for hating it.

Do you agree that the worst part of college basketball is the end of the game?  The fouling, time outs, endless commercials.  It is painful and boring to watch.

How would you fix it?  That is why I'm a fan of the Elam Ending. Also, the game ends on a winning basket!

I find the end of Elam games even more pointless. Regardless of the style of ending, if the game is close with 4 minutes left you’ll probably have a close game at the end of the game. If the game is out of hand with 4 minutes left, you’ll probably have a boring ending to the game. Just because the team that is ahead by a ton doesn’t want to play defense because if they do they might get called for a foul and give the opponent a FT and the ball back, so the trailing team makes a couple pointless buckets doesn’t make it exciting to me. The announcers getting all excited about, “hey, if (trailing team) gets 2 stops and hits 2 3s this is a game!” When they go on an 8-2 run to cut it to 11 with the leading team needing a single free throw to win the game does absolutely nothing for me.

From what I’ve watched, close games have turned into hack fests down the stretch because you only have 8 points to play with rather than a certain amount of time, and blowouts turn into one side jacking up 3s to try to end the game quickly and on the other end not playing defense to avoid a “flagrant” foul. I mean, last night someone got called for over the back on an offensive rebound attempt and the rebounding team got a free throw and the ball. Boring!

Sometimes it is. Especially in those games that are close but not that close. But that's just a sports problem. Football has endless running plays to kill clock. Soccer has players kicking it around the back in a possession game. And an Elam Ending can be just as dull if the game isn't close.

I enjoy it, it's a nice novelty, but I'm not sure I'd want it in all basketball because I like overtime, I like the drama of the clock running down and buzzer-beaters, and that's all lost in Elam. It's good for this environment, but I'm not convinced it's best for everything else.

Ideas:

**Give the team that is fouled and in the bonus the option of taking out the ball rather than shooting free throws.

**Get rid of the one-and-one entirely. Two free throws from seven on. This makes fouling more punitive. NBA does it this way.

**Shorten the play clock to 25 seconds the first time it is reset under two minutes of a half.

I like the Elam ending for tournaments and unique events like TBT.  99% of basketball is played without a clock, to a fixed score, so it brings the playground element back.  Want to see more strategy at the end?... make it win by 2.  I don't like the new foul rules, but last year did get physical at the end.  It will take time to find the right balance.

A vast majority of all basketball games played are to a certain point threshold. The elam ending is a better transition to the official game then a straight clock burnout.

Are we using the number of pickup games in the world vastly outnumber the number of organized games? Seems to be an odd justification. Let’s play 90% of the game with a clock, but the last 10% won’t be since that’s what most pickup games are.

I’m starting to wonder if Covid will eliminate more TBT teams than being beaten in a game.

I cannot prove it, but I always believed the problem arose when Reggie Smith became eligible. I had the impression that Buzz thought Reggie Smith would not qualify. When Reggie, who had already signed, became eligible Buzz no longer had a scholarship available for both Wilson and Newbill. I am not sure why Newbill had not sent in the necessary signed documents, but it allowed him to become the odd man out. The unfortunate part of it was that Smith transferred out before the season was completed.

DJO should not get a cut of the winnings if MU wins the whole thing. Goes and plays for Boogie Cousins which causes Jerel to be in down the stretch and lose us the championship. If DJO is on the team MU wins in a runaway last year.

Yeah, if the team lacked in offensive talent Derrick would be an issue. Good thing they have 4 guys who can score from all 3 levels and another couple that can shoot it from deep. Derrick brings a lot of value on a roster like that. He’s a hound on the defensive end.

Derrick Wilson starting over DJO/Diener/Rowsey

LOL
Ha, that is 3 coaches starting him at some point. So 3 coaches are wrong. If you didn't notice he was there to stop Mason, who was the heart of that offense, and he did. When it was not him it was DJO 2nd half but it took away his offense. Good coaching

You were talking about Mason's offense in college. I'm talking about coaches starting a player. But any way you're like Sand with Luke. Anyway unless there is a matchup like today I don't think he starts Friday. Just good coaching. Derrick really is a glue guy, who really defends, love his tenacity.  Sets a tone on D.  Offensively, he scored 19 a game in Sweden, now that is hard to believe.  Knows
his game, does not force any O, reminds me of how Bill Neary did the little things in '77, lots of scorers on this team.  Surprised Rowsey did not play, anybody know
why?

Yup. This is what I said from the start. Instead of the last 2 minutes potentially being a foul fest and clock drain you make it the last 10 minutes of a game.

There’s still a shot clock. It’s not like they’re playing 4 corners at the start of the 4th quarter.

Elam Ending has always been terrible and that’s been exacerbated by the fact that all off ball fouls are one free throw and the ball back.

Did you watch the game MU played in last night?  That's basically exactly what they did.  Go into 4 corners, drain the shot clock, run a high pick and roll.  For the entire 4th quarter.  Opponent made a little meaningless run, MU was never losing that game.

Yes. But CP3 was forced to play defense instead of fouling. And they played good defense to make their run that did make it uncomfortable for a quick moment. They trapped for turnovers, forced tough first shots. They simply gave MU too many offensive rebounds down the stretch. Led to the 5 pt possession that put it back out of reach and the game winner.

It’s a 30 second shot clock. With roughly 5 min of game time before the Elam starts. You can limit your opponent to like 6 possessions if you play it right. Just watch the pacing. The Mackey-Boehim game today got moving, got to that 42ish point per quarter pace and I think they scored 15 in the 4th before the Elam, and that’s including a 3 pt play at 3:59. It was awful. And it’s happened in most games I’ve watched unless it’s an up and down game that stays within a possession or two the whole game

All the evidence you need is that each game has went to the ending before the 3:55 mark. Teams eagle eye the clock for the final minute and foul immediately to whoever’s benefit.

The off the ball fouls are only free throws, if the fouling team is in the bonus.

I have been taping all the games and fast forwarding to the 6 minute mark in the fourth quarter.
I did watch almost all of the Carmen Crew loss today, because I wanted them to lose. Most of the other games I do not care who wins, so watching the last 6 minutes works out well for me.

I think the House of 'Paign only has 3-4 guys that ended up playing with the Illini.  Billy Garrett from DePaul.  The PG is from Cent. Connecticut.  A big is from Grand Canyon.  Dahm from South Dakota State is the primary player.

He played on a Team Hines. I found it interesting that a U of I alumni team was missing one of the most electric scorers from the last 7-8 years.

The difference between him and Vander is he went to a Europe and made presumably a bunch of money playing for top level teams in Spain, Turkey, Greece, and Russia.  He played his career right. I love Vander, but he really didn’t.

Probably.  With the smaller field, the organizers chose teams they were familiar with mostly.  They have a good idea of who the good ones are.  The newer teams have been a mixed bag.  House of Paign has been good.  The Tampa team that picked up a bunch of Auburn players late lost their first game, as did the team coached by Homer Drew.  Of the final eight, four of them were there last year, another had to forfeit, and two more had a good run last year.  The Dayton team lost a close game to the eventual champs in Columbus.  Sideline Cancer lost to the Golden Eagles in the regional final, so the two of them both missed the final eight by one game and lost to the finalists.

I repeat, DJO should not get a cut of the winnings if GE Alums win TBT.  Guy decides he wants to go play for Boogie Cousins's team, sees the GE Alum go to the finals last year, and jumps right back to GE Alums.  Had he stayed with GE Alum, they're looking at defending their title right now.

A few people get concerned when they have big leads and win by not as much. I do not. I did not see the first game, but in this one, you could see how they were playing the Elam ending with a double-digit lead. The point is to score, not necessarily to defend, so it makes some sense to make the high risk - high reward play. A long three might miss and give the other team an easy rebound, but if it goes in, you get three points. Kicking the ball out on a break might lead to a better shot, but racing down and hitting it fast might end the game. They also missed their first two shots in Elam time, though they were pretty good ones. The winning basket was a put-back of what I thought was a hurried shot. So the other team briefly cut it to five, which does not seem like much, but it is when the leading team only has to score four to win it.  And as you observe, the other team had to throw up some desperation shots that went in.  Scores can be deceiving when the only point is to win as fast as possible.

Jamil got one of the worst breaks I can remember for Marquette guy in awhile. He was on pace to get a proper deal with the Clippers when that bogus sexual misconduct claim came up. I’m pretty confident he’d still be an NBA player if that hadn’t happened.

Buycks is unfortunately on the wrong side of 30 but man he’s become such a complete guard. He was a beast in China. I hope he grabs a spot in Spain or Turkey.

DJO is hard to say given the size issue is so pronounced. But he looks GREAT

Right under the basket maybe.  Anything requiring lateral movement was not good.  He was on ice skates.

I liked Luke at MU but the defense deficiencies are more glaring against more athletic Pros and former pros.  Hoping it gets better but Chapman will not play him going forward if he doesn’t rectify it.

Just throw it on the pile of Vander's bad career decisions.

I mean he may not have a college degree. May have blown his chance to be etched in as one of the greatest careers in MU history, may have alienated himself from helping the alumni team play for a crap ton of money, BUT at least he's well traveled

You left out wasting his prime playing years grinding away in D-league instead of making some decent money abroad.

Maybe Vander’s of the opinion that there’s more to life than earning every penny he possibly can. Maybe he valued not moving across the world to somewhere he knows nobody, knows nothing about, and can’t even communicate with most people at. Maybe he doesn’t plan on using a college degree to make money, or maybe he knows he can go back to MU at any point over the next 60 years of his life to finish the year he has left.

But maybe Scoopers know better what’s best for Vander.

While he did have a couple rebounds i believe he turned it over after each one, additionally gave up numerous offensive rebounds due to his lack of quickness.  Listen i dont dislike the guy, just dont see his value.

The idea that Buzz could toughen up a player than other coaches couldn't.

Buzz had a number of soft players.  He had a number of tough players.  More of a function of who he recruited and not some special gift.

The announcers said he has 1500 kids enrolled in his academy. That's a lot of kids.

I talked about this a lot during last year's TBT. I can imagine a decent upper middle class life on the north shore running a youth bball academy > an upper class life spending every waking moment grinding/traveling/recruiting as a college bball coach.

Coaches carry certain identities. It’s certainly not a catch all panacea of all veteran players are tough.

Unless of course your Dodds explaining why a young team can’t be successful. Also relevant, if you’re Dodds then explaining why the veteran team isn’t tough and how 90% of the team is battling through extremely debilitating injuries that the common man could not possibly tolerate.

Don’t forget the Dodd’s excuse you can’t beat a team on their senior night (except when it’s Marquette’s sr night) and that Marquette shoots poorly at home because they don’t practice there regularly (except that opposing teams shoots just fine in a facility they see for the first time) and it’s hard to beat a team three times in a row, and perennially used “bad matchup” for every team Marquette plays (where is Wojo recruiting these guys of every team we play is a bad matchup?)

This would be a good take if he wasn't currently playing in Kosovo, played in Italy and played in Israel. Unless you're insinuating that he speaks Italian, Hebrew, and Serbian/Albanian not to mention knows people in those countries.

Also a good hint that someone wants to cash out playing ball is when they leave a team early to you know play professionally to earn money.

So you’re telling me his interests from the time he was 20 to the time he was 27 changed? Shocking. And how long did those stints overseas last?

I’m guessing you haven’t taken the time to read up on Vander’s professional career. He’s dealt with depression for a decent chunk of it. Maybe living by himself overseas wasn’t the best thing for him, for that reason or any other number of reasons, at the time. Maybe he now has a better handle of his mental health. Maybe he’s come to accept the NBA isn’t a real possibility anymore. Keep in mind he had 3 NBA stints, where he made good money even for the short stints.

What’s right/the best decision for you isn’t right/the best decision for everyone else. People are motivated by different things.

You replied to a post that claimed he had “a pile of bad career decisions” by listing a number of career decisions Vander has made.  Seemed to be highlighting the “pile of bad career decisions.” But maybe you were just listing them for fun with no judgment. If so, my bad. Certainly comes off as you knowing what’s best for Vander.

And again, go read up on his “pile of bad career decisions” and let me know how long those overseas stints lasted. If anything, those seem to be the “bad career decisions” Vander has made. He doesn’t seem to enjoy it when he leaves the USA, given they've at times lasted just weeks.

I also left out this reply to warriorchick saying you left out years of his playing career being wasted grinding in the D League instead of getting paid big bucks overseas:

I have a number of friends, coworkers, and acquaintances who have played overseas. Some loved it and have remained as long as they can, either in the same country or bouncing from country to country. Some decided after a few years they and came back to earn grad degrees or get a job (one did one year in Lithuania and then came back to get an MBA and works on Wall Street).  One played three years, came back and got a job, and decided to return. Some hated it, whether it be due to culture shock, language barrier, not making any more or homesickness. Some made it a few years, some a year, one made it a month in England and now works at Google. To each their own.

Maybe it just wasn't Vander's scene. Not every location a player goes to is exciting and exotic. One NWSL player I know signed with a Russian team and lived in a compound six hours from Moscow and could only leave on group outings. I don't think any of us would want to deal with that.

While its certainly not the level of NBA or NCAA broadcasts, I'm actually always impressed with the TBT play by play.  These are players that almost universally have not played domestically for years, and many of whom didn't play high level competition even when they did. And yet there are anecdotes and like a 90% hit rate on all the calls.  For a tournament that only comes around for a couple weeks once a year, that's pretty good in my book.

Some people exaggerate when they say that your team could be playing for the title and fans would still find something to complain about.  Us Scoopers have the actual evidence.  Back to back Championship game appearances and the thread is still half bickering.

Just wait till Wojo gets his players in and can start to rebuild.

Are there Vegas lines on these games? If I stood win win, say, $100,000 if my team won but 0 if they lost I think at least a small hedge would be in order.

There are, but I'm not sure if there have been any ML odds. We've been favored by 7, 4 and 2 thus far. Three covers.

Great to see Travis on the floor at the end with DJO, Jamil, and Dwight.

With the Elam ending, he is likely always to be in at the end.  He has ended at least three games I can think of offhand and probably more.  When you need to get eight points, having a guy who can get three of them in a flash is something you cannot pass up.

Definitely gonna have to play really well to win this. Jamil is usually a really tough match up in this tourney, I think that will again be the case Tuesday.

Overseas Elite added Johnson, but overall was a weaker team than in the past. And it showed with how much they relied on one guy. Of the “Big 4” teams, I would argue Marquette was the only one who got better compared to last year. I think they got the bad shooting game out of their system today. Really excited for Tuesday. I bet they are -5 or so.

I made the mistake of posting something positive yesterday before being reminded that this is a place that only allows griping and bitching about all things Marquette Basketball.

I have pretty much given on on basketball discussions on the board here. Some guys just can't enjoy that these guys are out there giving it their all.

The refs didn't job us, the other team wasn't dirty, we all know Derrick is a terrible offensive player, blah, blah, blah. I'm sick of the same few people trying to destroy this board for the hundreds of others who come here. They do it during the regular season and they are trying to do it now. I, for one, have finally resolved to never respond to these few joy suckers and I would encourage others to do the same.

Maybe they will go away. Maybe we can then get back to honest give and take about both the good and the bad happenings that are MU basketball.

I'm just enjoying seeing these guys out there playing so hard and well. Win or lose on Tuesday, they have been fun to watch.

Totally.  Its incredible to me to watch the presence he commands on the floor, given how overmatched he is physically and speed-wise at this point.  But he just seems so in control of the proceedings when he's out there, and it feels like everyone is kind of cognizant of where he is.  Its a blast to watch.

His under the basket inbound to a cutting Jamil is a perfect example of what Travis brings in that respect. Looks like a fairly basic play but the timing, touch, and location on the pass made it so Jamil didn't have to waste a single millisecond gathering himself or altering his trajectory to the basket and it was a guaranteed 2 points. Love that guy.

I think even in his prime Diener was overmatched physically. Never very athletic but a basketball genius and deadeye shooter. He’s only refined those. That calf hobbling him makes him look even older and slower out there than he actually is.

But he’s just so EFFICIENT. No wasted dribbles, or passes, or shots cause he’s always set in his spot. I watched a video recently of Mike Miller, stiff and slow with a bad back, absolutely COOK one of his players at Memphis with craftiness and efficiency of movement. Watching Diener is the same vibe. They talk about the game slowing down for young ballers...it moves at a glacial speed for #34

OE does seem to be a weaker team than in years past, but I looked at the records today and they have not been quite as dominating as they seemed.  They won their fourth championship by a lot after blowing out our team in the semis, but they won the first three championship games by two and three points.  Usually they have been a bunch of guys who got together just before the tournament and did not even practice together.  They just had enough talent to get away with getting to know each other in the early rounds.

If what you mean by the Big 4 is the top seeds, you may be right. Of the final four, Dayton was surely better than last year.  Last year they lost in the regional finals at Columbus to Carmen's Crew in a close game.  This year, they dominated the team that beat Carmen's Crew.  They had a couple players from their university team this year.  Sideline Cancer clearly has their best team ever.  It will be a good game Tuesday.

He brings so much value to this team in terms of defense, hustle, and the willingness to defer. Knows his role and plays it perfectly. Epitome of a team-first guy. It's clear why he's started for Buzz, Wojo, and Chapman.

Watching TBT has been awesome and the job Joe Chapman has done over the last couple of years is really great. Can't give him enough credit for pulling good talent together and then making the most of it. In-game adjustments are great too.

Diener's game right now, reminds me of old man golf.....hit the ball straight for fairways and greens and don't worry about the distance.

Look, I am not a Derrick basher by any means, but the biggest reason he started for Buzz and Wojo is because there were no better options.   I mean he started over John Dawson and a freshman Duane Wilson.

In the last 19 seasons, Marquette has failed to make the post season three times.  Two of those seasons was with Derrick as the starting PG.  I don't disagree with AE's assessment, but let's not act like the choice of him as a PG was out of a position of strength.  In fact, this tournament shows what his role should have been at MU.  And that's not a 30+ mpg guy like he was his last two years at MU.

The problems with Derrick at Marquette were always more with the cast around him. You need those kinds of players, but you also need the stars to play those roles. The closest Derrick had were Jamil, Gardner, and Carlino, none of whom were NBA ready.

Derrick's defense has been pretty to watch.  His fitness, his hustle, his intelligence on D all show up well in this type of competition.  On offense, he's being used appropriately - which is to screen and rebound.

He was a victim of circumstance at MU, but I admire him for making a living at professional basketball for 4 years now having started that with a very limited offensive skill set.  And - based on his international stats - he's getting better each year.

I was hoping to see him guard iso-Joe.

One of his best games at MU was taking the place of Junior when he was suspended in Madison. Wilson’s main job was to harass Taylor all over the court while others generated offense.

As others have said, if he was a 7th man that came in to play 15 minutes of tough defense, he’d be looked at much differently.

Stone played in the opener against the Team Hines guys, matching up against Ethan Happ.

Stone had a good game with 19 points, 6 boards and a couple blocks.  A surprising 3 of 10 from three.

He left near the end of that game, hasn't played during the next two games,  from what I've read is an injured achilles.

Dont necessarily agree with that, Travis himself stated that he felt he had a few years of playing left in the tank and wanted to take advantage of them before they were gone.

I think it was just a coincidence

Team Hines said something in a couple interviews, and the announcers discussed it repeatedly before and during their game.  I haven't followed anything on Twitter.

Good use of teal, Chili, but undoubtedly the Golden Eagles could go a long way toward good will by donating 10% of their winnings to Sideline Cancer's causes.

I think chick is right. Diener doesn't seem like the guy to grind grind grind on the recruiting trail.

But, that's just like my opinion, man.

Not only does he not seem like the guy, I believe he has explicitly said that he does not like the recruiting aspect of coaching.

The guy has plenty of money and has three young kids. Why would someone like that take on a stressful, 100-hour per week job that he is not absolutely passionate about?

Dude, what in gods name does that have to do with mixing up the fact that Derrick Wilson is not an alaskan born NBA player.

Also on tv its impossible to know that Derrick wears a damn t shirt with his jersey?????

Dude.
I believe he was living in Alaska and played high school ball in Alaska. It does not matter where he was originally from. The 2013-2014 Marquette Media Guide lists him being from Anchorage, Alaska.

He played four years at the school in New England.  He is "from Alaska" because that is where his parents were living while Derrick was at Marquette.  They were stationed in the Army there.  Which is also why he was born in Germany.

He played at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT.

I've mentioned here before, my Orthopedist saw me with a Marquette shirt on during a visit.  He said he knew Derrick as he was affiliated with The Hotchkiss School himself.  (I can't remember if his kids went there or if his medical group covered the athlete's there.)  He said Derrick was a great kid and was one of the best football players he ever saw, but Derrick loved playing basketball way more.

He remains a defensive liability. Their last opponent had a lot of length as well, so his size was working against him. He's gotten a little run in earlier rounds. He buried an open 3 and handled the ball at the 1 (obviously his role), but got blown by with some regularity at the point of attack on the defensive side of the court, which is probably why he hasn't gotten more PT.

i'm not sure he is any more of a liability than Acker and he can stretch the floor and make deep 3s last night the offense was a bit stagnant at times so he could come in to give a spark and fee up the other guys to penetrate i think

Acker is not a defensive liability.  He stops the ball, gets steals and makes it very hard to post him up.  That’s the difference.

Rowsey is as good a pure shooter from 3 as I have seen in the 37 years I have been watching MU hoops.  Markus and Novak are the only ones close.

He is unequivocally the worst defender.

MU is playing for the TBT championship with AR playing limited minutes.   I am willing to give Joe the benefit of the doubt.

AR is a sharp shooter. Incredible no doubt. However, Mo Acker was a 38% career shooter from 3 at MU, 40+ as a senior. And has been playing pro ball, and all the savvy and development at the PG position that comes with it, for almost a decade. I’m gonna take the very good shooter from distance who is a more complete player over the great shooter, lesser player all day. Especially when you have 3-4 other guys on the team who are an absolute bucket from all over the floor

Related, LOVE how Buycks went from scoring beast last year to facilitator/do whatever we need with DJO joining and scoring a bunch. He was one of my underrated favs at MU, love how much he’s developed and grown as a player

He looks great, no doubt. But I still have Louisville in my head.
Funny how things stick, when I saw Mo I thought of GTown and the six 3’s and the UConn game when I thought “What’s Acker out there for?” before it was apparent that DJ broke his foot.

Disagree at most elite levels you can't win championships if you stink at D. This format is even less forgiving with a bad D, if you're having a cold shooting night you're gone. We've had a couple of quarters where D has kept us in the game or given us the lead

I think Acker had his 6-6 on threes in a blowout win over Providence.

It was Cubillan going 6-6 against Georgetown in a three point win.

Rowsey's footwork in on-ball defense is... lacking. He has never shown the lateral quickness to keep someone from taking him off the bounce and forcing our defense into a help/rotation situation. A good enough player is able to blow by him and is either presented with a floater/midrange shot or a potential dish to multiple levels depending on how the help defense develops.

I haven't really focused on Acker's on ball defense in the exact comparable situation, but I haven't noticed that happening to him with regularity so I'm going to assume that Acker is at least able to present *at least* slightly more of an obstacle off the bounce on the perimeter.

Nobody is looking for Rowsey to turn himself into senior-year Dominic James for on-ball defensive pressure, but he's got to show more or his offensive ability simply doesn't cancel out the opportunities he presents to the opposition.

The winner will get $1 million, the loser will get nothing. And if Sideline Cancer wins, $100,000 will go to pancreatic cancer research. I don’t get that same vibe with Buzz. Kind of just drops everything from that coaching stop and moves on. Not saying he’s an ass to the guys or that, for example, he and JFB don’t keep in touch, but he doesn’t put the effort into it other coaches do.

I enjoyed it as well. Loved the dark curtains with logos positioned around the court to block off seating.

Wait - they're only giving $100,000 to cancer?  I thought they were giving the whole $1 million!  Good, I will no longer feel guilty about rooting for Marquette.

Anyone can donate $100,000 to cancer.  We’re giving $180,000 to Rowsey & Fischer.

I happened to like the VERY slow trigger on the dump button, so you’d get a blatant profanity in the huddle and then 5 seconds of silence as they just laid on it

It was interesting re-watching the Elam ending. As they are setting up for the inbounds on the final play, the camera found Joe Chapman and you can hear him twice call for Travis to go down to the corner.

Also, Charlo was on the court and nearly hugging Diener before the shot even went in. :D

I wouldn’t go that far. I don’t think he regrets Indiana at all. He didn’t have a FF or Natty, but he coached #1 teams there. And not many coaches can say they coached at a legendary program. I do bet he wishes he could have come back after

It could've been blowing smoke, but his speech at the 100th dinner seemed pretty clear that he didn't realize how good he had it here until he left. While I think just about anyone in his position would take Indiana, he's realized in retrospect the no-brainer decision isn't always the right one.

You're probably right. I never thought badly of him for going to IU but I did for the way he did it. Heck, as an MU alum I think I would have taken the IU job.

I'm just guessing that he may have enjoyed his time at MU the most.

If MU wins, what they should do is encourage all of their fans to donate to Sideline Cancer's cause, including providing links on social media.

Per ESPN's preview of the game, if Sideline Cancer had won, they were going to donate $100k here - https://griffithfamilyfoundation.org/sideline-cancer (https://griffithfamilyfoundation.org/sideline-cancer)

Agree and think he would do a very good job because hes built a name with all the players that he has had go pro.  The issue is he is such a boorish ahole that he is impossible to root for.  Serious personality disorder.

Hope the MU players hedged and took the 5.5.

Buzz has never marketed anything but himself.

We (mostly) all loved him when he was here and said how he was less a self-promoter than Crean. We really didn’t get dissed by him. He had a problem with Larry Williams and Scott Pilarz et al.  Not with Marquette.

Yes, he whiffed on the prognosis for the new BigEast. Don’t think that had any maliciousness to it either. Just overestimated the effect of football money and underestimated the job Val and Co. would do. Also, Buzz didn’t foresee the commitment Fox and its FS1 was about to make.

I surprised myself by how much I got into it. I cheered a lot, especially at the end, obviously. It reminded me of how much I've missed sports, and of how much I love the blue and gold.

For me, the unsung heroes were Cook and Derrick. Both played their roles to perfection, and Cook actually contributed a ton in the title game. But really, everybody who played contributed throughout the tournament.

The only time I beyotched the entire tournament was when Buycks took that silly foul tonight for #5. I didn't think Chapman should have had him in the game then, either, and I think I saw Joe pat his own chest -- as in "my bad" -- when he had to take Buycks out.

Otherwise, Chapman did one heck of a job coaching during this tournament. Lots of really good inbounds plays, lots of great answers anytime the opponent had a short run, his guys played really hard for him, the team almost always looked organized and ready and intense.

It can't be easy coaching a group of adult men who think they have everything figured out already. Very impressive work by Joe.

All in all, a fun, satisfying fan experience.

We Are Marquette!

Ok, but from a short-term perspective, he did, even if Nova carried most of the weight. To your point, look at last year top-to-bottom and the parity strength of our league. Recruiting is fine. BET still the top college draw at MSG by far. Add UCONN. I like our trajectory.

Actually pretty cool and shows his connection to his players. Calipari takes a ton of pride in getting his players into the league and has tons of jerseys in his house as a result.

As for Crean being a boorish a**hole, the stuff that he’s done with Pardon My Take has actually been really good and he doesn’t take himself seriously at all. He’s one of their favorite reoccurring coaches, they’ve had some hilarious convos with him. He may have lightened up a bit post-IU

I think in most careers, looking back, there are places where one can say “that’s where I was happiest” while also acknowledging that moving on from that company to another company for a better title or more money is/was the right move.

I think if for whatever reason Crean came back to MU, his personality and where he is in life would be vastly different from his previous time there. On a side note, his year as an analyst at ESPN, I thought he was terrific.

ESPN has a vested interest in promoting TBT . Golden Eagles Alumni Team will be part of the promotion Just like Ohio State team was last year .
