NASCAR driver uses N-word on live feed
« on: April 13, 2020, 09:25:55 AM »
https://twitter.com/DriveThrough_/status/1249513645110951942?s=20

NASCAR driver Kyle Larson, erroneously thinking he was in a 1-on-1 conversation with his team, used the N-word during a live stream of an iRacing event Sunday.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nascar/2020/04/13/kyle-larson-nascar-racer-uses-racial-slur-during-virtual-race/2981082001/

Larson, 27, is half Japanese and is the only driver of Japanese descent to win a major NASCAR race. He climbed from short track racing into NASCAR through its “Drive for Diversity” program.

Can't make this shyte up.

Unfortunate.   In different times, it would register higher on my give a crap meter.   Currently, meh.

Refreshingly, NASCAR has traditionally been pretty no-nonsense on this, almost draconian (I remember a driver being suspended for statements his father had made in the past).  I would imagine he's lost his ride in pretty short order.

Larson apologized, but he still got suspended by NASCAR, dumped by his major sponsors and, today, fired by Chip Ganassi Racing and dropped by Chevrolet.

Personally, I hope he gets a second chance.

Nope, I have zero tolerance for these type of people.  Plenty of other guys around that can drive in circles that don't say the N-word.

Nascar didn't have anything else to do, either.

He said "NASCAR"?

It was a hard R. No argument over “why do they say it and we can’t” with the “a” or “ah” ending. That’s never anything but derogatory and racially tinged.

I’m with Hards. If he dropped it so freely here, he routinely and likely frequently says it otherwise

You should continue to make excuses for racism.  It's a really good look.

So you believe anybody who has ever used a racial or ethnic epithet in public, in their entire lives, is completely unredeemable and should be shunned for the rest of their days on Earth?

I have been accused (erroneously) many times of being a lib on this and other forums, of being PC and overly sensitive to racial situations, but I have to disagree with that opinion.

Bringing up a 28 year old movie is such a middle-aged, white guy move.

+1. Dude is 27 years old. What do you want him to do now, kill himself?

So, were bringing up age and race, do you have a point?

Of course he isn't unredeemable, but when you are in a public position and sponsored by a company, you are going to be fired.  And it may take awhile to get back.  And you may have to find something else to do with your life.

Your point is?

That it is predictably hilarious.  People have been using that movie title for decades as if it is some sort of way of leveling the racial epithet playing field.

At least you didn't use the other go to "hey they get to say it in rap songs" line.

I hope you are not saying that's ok. Yet, we never hear an uproar over that.

I certainly don’t subscribe to “cancel” culture and don’t think Larson should be exiled forever. However, this doesn’t smack of an isolated accident. This wasn’t a teen saying something dumb on Twitter, and it wasn’t the heat of battle. It was casually dropping maybe THE most inflammatory word in a random online stream. Which to me shows a concerning level of comfort and familiarity with its use.

That’s what I imagine will weigh on people as they look into giving him another ride. People can change and make amends, and that’s deserving of another try. But I can totally understand why people don’t chalk this up to a simple accident or isolated mistake

I hope you are not saying that's ok. Yet, we never hear an uproar over that.

Do you have any AA friends? Like true close friends, not an acquaintance or someone you work with? Ask them the difference between another AA saying the word with a soft “A” in a song and a white guy dropping a hard “R” in a less than positive fashion. If you can notice a difference, you are being willfully ignorant to push a “it’s just words” agenda. Though I imagine you probably find all hip hop to be bothersome for many reasons

I agree with all of this, and I'm not saying I'd hire him tomorrow for anything. But I am saying that if he somehow can prove he has changed, he deserves a second chance.

Of course he isn't unredeemable, but when you are in a public position and sponsored by a company, you are going to be fired.  And it may take awhile to get back.  And you may have to find something else to do with your life.

Yes, actions (and words) have consequences. And he is experiencing those consequences now. You are right that he might have to find something else to do, but I, for one, hope that he can humbly, honestly show he has redeemed himself and that he gets another chance in his chosen profession.
