[Cracked Sidewalks] Markus Howard Scoring Record Watch
« on: October 30, 2019, 05:34:57 PM »
Within in the next two weeks or so, Markus Howard will become Marquette's all-time leading scorer. Ho-hum. That's just the beginning of what could be a long, prolific scoring spree that redefines not just the Marquette record books, but a few NCAA marks as well.

I believe Maravich holds the single season scoring record.  1381 in 31 games in 1970.  44.5 per, on 38 shots per game.

Yeah, the Kimble record is modern era, since the three point line. May need to edit that.

Edited, thanks oldwarrior81.

What?  You don't think he can knock off Pistol Pete's all-time record?  Some fan you are.  That's only roughly 44 ppg.  Doable.

Great work, Brew.  Thank you.

Gosh I hope he doesn't break Maravich's record. Because those were really bad LSU teams and the line-up was Maravich and four dead bodies. We're better than that.

Maravich had to get 44 points for those LSU teams. Otherwise LSU would be shut out.

I am feeling 900 points.   36 games, 25 ppg.

Great work, Brew.  Thank you.

Actually, thanks to Marquette playing more games these days, Markus would "only" have to average slightly over 35.4 ppg and reach the national championship game. If he wants to make a run at the Pistol, I'm here for it.

Assume we replaced Wojo with the Ghost of Press Maravich (this is Halloween after all). Press takes a liking to Markus and does the LSU thing. He creates the "Hauserletter" Offense to get Markus 35.4 ppg or more.

How long do you think it would take before defenses doubled and tripled Markus?

Assume we averaged 77 ppg as a team (not unreasonable if our defense is any good), that would mean that the entire rest of the team (including the bench) would average 41.6 ppg, or an average of about 4.5 points per player, assuming we went 11 deep.

If you throttled Markus and held him to 25 ppg or less under those circumstances, no way we're going to win more than a handful of our games. That folks, is what happened to LSU in the late 1960s.

If teams want to double or triple team Markus, let them.  This isn't the late 60s, and the supporting cast is better than LSU's.

Doesn't he need 1713 to pass Maravich's 3,367?  What is the max we could play?  Is it 39 or 40?  That would put him in the 43-44 ppg, wouldn't it?

Absolutely ridiculous that Maravich needed only 83 games to reach that number.

the LSU teams weren't that bad.  Not great by any stretch, but not terrible.

In 1970 LSU went 13-5 and finished second to Kentucky in the SEC.  With only one bid per conference getting a NT bid, LSU went the NIT route and as we know, lost to the MU team in NYC.

When Maravich was a freshman the varsity was 3-23.  1-17 in conference.  So 13-5 was a near miracle in three seasons

While Pistol's teammates didn't get a lot of shots, there definitely were rebounds aplenty.

Dan Hester put up 16 and 11.  Al Sanders with 12 and 15.  Bill Newton added 11 & 10.

on a side note, Maravich scored 714 points as a freshman.  Which would have put him around 4400 points scored in less than  100 games at LSU.

I was referring to the single season record. 39 is the max number of games, which would mean just over 43.9 ppg to pass Maravich for career scoring. Of course, that's also close to doubling Markus' 3-year total in one season.

Even with the offense designed for him, those are insane numbers Maravich put up, especially in just 3 years.

1967-1968 and 1968-1969, LSU was awful.

The addition of "Fig" Newton and "Apple" Sanders changed a lot down there. Those guys were beasts and played basketball the way Dick Butkus or Ray Nitschkie played football.

Sorry gang but I was never a fan of LSU or Maravich. Saw him over the years at Memorial Gym at Vanderbilt University and he impressed me as a spoiled punk. Got to the NIT and had his head handed to him by the one team that knew how to play defense -- OUR WARRIORS!!!!

Pistol Pete was one of the most enjoyable and talented players I ever saw live.  If he played in the three point era his point totals would be incredible.  The guy could hit from distance with people hanging all over him.

I will continue to update this article as the season goes on. Accomplishments already surpassed are highlighted while the blue text indicates where Howard is currently at. I am including his career total and season average as well so we can forecast where he might end up.

FWIW, at his current pace, he would score 1,216 points on the season if Marquette played the likely minimum of 32 games. If they played the maximum 39 games, he would even eclipse Pete Maravich's single season scoring record by more than 100 points.

No shame in being overlooked, but Markus did become the first men's player to eclipse 2,000 points tonight.  Wonder if he'll get another ceremonial ball next home game?

With 18 points tonight, Markus Howard became the first Marquette men's player to eclipse 2,000 career points. He's a ways away from the next mark on the list. 185 more points to join the all time top-10 Big East scorers.

Joe McCann of Scrambled Eggs was wondering on the podcast about George Thompson's career scoring average record. To make his life easier, I tallied up exactly how many points Markus Howard would need to have at any given point of the season to take that record from Thompson, rounding all numbers up because you have to get the over to take the average.

An explanation of how the table works and the table itself was added to the bottom of the original post on Cracked Sidewalks. To pass Thompson in Marquette's next game, Howard would need 68 points at the Kohl Center. At his current 28.0 ppg pace, he would pass Thompson at Kansas State on December 7, assuming he plays in every game to that point.
