http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/26057540/ncaa-experiment-new-bonus-free-throw-rules-nit

The NCAA will experiment with eliminating one-and-one free throws and change the way bonus free throws are awarded at this season's NIT.

The experimental rules announced Friday also will include an extended 3-point arc, a wider free throw lane and new shot clock rules after offensive rebounds -- rules all used at last year's NIT.

Team fouls will be reset at the 10-minute mark of each half and two free throws will be awarded after the fifth team foul of each segment. If a team doesn't reach five team fouls during a segment, two bonus free throws will be awarded after the second team foul committed in the final two minutes of each half.

The shot clock also will be reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound and the 3-point arc will be moved to 22 feet, 1.75 inches to match the FIBA line used in international competition.

The free throw lane will be widened from 12 to 16 feet, the same width used by the NBA.

I'd prefer just going to quarters rather than just randomly resetting fouls in the middle of each half. I'm down with all the other changes though

Didn't they do this in last year's NIT?

Everything but the bonus. I dont remember the widened lane either.

If they do quarters, they need longer breaks & to have TV timeouts at the under 5s. That 3/4/3/3/4/3 minutes of play between TV timeouts last year was ridiculous.

Just hope they never go to the old NBA 3 to make 2.
I would of love that in the final minute of the Butler game at Fiserv on Wednesday at 10:07pm.

You and I are old enough to remember that travesty.  Only thing worse is the idiotic advance the ball to half court BS....literally the dumbest rule in sports.

It was terrible. Too choppy.

so FTs are a lot more like the NBA.  On the 5th foul you get 2 shots.
Also on second foul under two minutes.

If you're really old you may remember offensive putbacks on missed FTs were only worth one point.

There also was the collegiate rule (maybe ended around 1970?) on the first six fouls you got one FT for every foul.  On the seventh foul it was 1-and-1.

And for a time there also was the option of taking the ball out of bounds rather than shooting one FT.

And way back in the golden days (30's?) each team had a designated FT shooter that took all the FTs.

I'm all for advancing the ball. Does it make sense from a pure basketball perspective? No. But the NBA is in the entertainment business and advancing the ball give more chances for game winners (or entertainment)

I can't believe anyone is older than I am. I saw my first MU game in 1945. MU led by Sammy Sauceda whipped Lawrence College 51-19.

It penalizes the defensive team through no fault of their own.  It is terrible.

Imagine any other sport with that travesty....the NFL letting a team advance to the opponents's 30 yard line because of a time out, or baseball putting a runner on third base after a time out.  So bad, so so bad.

When entertainment trumps the sanctities of the game, it's bad.  That rule is so absurd.

Sauceda was a guy that could do everything.    He began as a halfback on the MU football team, but was drafted into the Army before the basketball season started.   Came back a couple years later playing both football and basketball.  I think when he finished at MU, he was the schools second leader all-time scorer, behind teammate Gene Berce.

A Spanish professor at MU.
He started the MU in Madrid program in the 60's.
Eventually became the MU Athletic Director in the early 70's.
Even did TV commentary for a few games.

Really?  I like it a lot.  More drama at the end is good.

I'm all for getting rid of the bonus as well but I don't understand why they need to go to this quarter system.  Do they want to decrease free throws?  Why not just raise the bonus from seven?

Exactly this!  I hated the disruption of play with the quarters.  On the surveys they conducted I put a hard negative on that and expressed so in the comments section.  Seems many others did as well since I think that is the only rule they aren't trying out again and are instead modifying the foul rules.
