I very much like the Bailey over Cain by Wojo. He looks to me that he might have a much higher ceiling as a college player. In addition, Morrow continues to look better and that is a positive sign. IMO, Morrow is the difference maker moving forward. If he and Bailey stay on the court, I like this team more than I did two weeks ago.

Sacar was ahead of Cain last year.  No surprise that he is this year as well.  Bailey playing ahead of him is more of a surprise, but Bailey is bigger and just as athletic.  We will see how it plays out.

Sacar is the best slasher on the team - a needed element.  Neither Cain nor Bailey are effective slashers YET, and both are more upright type of players than a guy like Sacar or even JJJ - guys who could play lower to the floor on their drives, and as a result create better angles/effectiveness on their drives

I disagree about Brendan being a better athlete than Cain.  Cain in my view has more quickness and bounce overall than Brendan.  Neither are very strong with the ball at this point.

To be fair, I said "just as athletic."  I may be wrong, but I don't think the difference is that great.

Maybe wrong but looks like BB is a better defender

Agree with ners.
I believe Cain is a better athlete and better rebounder. However BB's D and upside can't be ignored.

I disagree on being the better athlete.  Cain is good but BB is like a bigger version — it just looks easier for him, even with the frosh mistakes.

BB is a more polished basketball player. Cain is very good athlete, but I do not see the basketball skills or ball IQ. IMO, BB is a much better option.

tower912

Right now, BB has growing confidence.  Jamal does not.  BB is not turning the ball over.  Jamal is.   BB is a little longer and is playing better.  Athleticism is a push when one player is playing to the scout and the other isn't.

Everyone needs their asterisk I guess.

I didn't mean for this to come across as an asterisk. I thought we played great, tough defense, we showed a much more balanced offensive attack than usual, and Wojo had a heckuva gameplan. And of course a great individual performance from Markus showing how versatile he can be on offense.

brewcity77

GooooMarquette mentioned in NM that Markus is now at 1,285 points, good for 27th in Marquette history. He will likely pass Davante next game (1,287) and if he stays on his current pace (22.6 ppg) will climb into 3rd by the end of the season, and that's if we are one-and-done in the BET with no postseason. It's not unthinkable that some deep runs in the BET & NCAA could have him close to or even passing Jerel McNeal before this season is over.

I'll be honest, this is part of the reason I've been frustrated this season. If he stays healthy & finishes his eligibility, Markus will absolutely shatter McNeal's record. It's conceivable that he could not only be the first MU player to score 2,000 points but the first to score 2,500. He could end up a top-25 all-time scorer in NCAA history & make a run at Troy Bell's all-time Big East record (2,632).

Passing GT this year would be amazing...no debate over 3 vs 4 yrs — he would be the undisputed scoring king.

If Howard stays healthy, he needs to average 20.3 ppg to be guaranteed to pass Thompson without needing any postseason play. I think there's a very good chance a healthy Howard will be at worst 3rd on the scoring chart when the season ends.

We have one of the two most gifted scorers in school history, along with Sam Hauser (who will likely finish top-10, if not top-5), and the deepest roster to support them we've seen in a generation.

That's a big part of why I was so frustrated after IU and KU. One we never got off the mat, the other we didn't show up for the second half. Yesterday alleviated some of that because there were legitimate coaching moves that made the difference. I just don't want to see Howard and Hauser end up leaving without having some real success. It would feel like a waste if those two talents didn't make runs at Big East titles and NCAA games where their are few enough teams left to identify your success with a number.

That's why seasons are 30+ games. A lot of season left, for both frustrations and excitement. We are right where reasonable people would expect.

Box score

I just now looked at this.
Was a little surprised about Theo's stat line. Was also surprised that their bench outscored ours 19-11.

Other than that, about what you'd expect when our opponent gets Markused.

How much of their bench scoring can be attributed to the early foul trouble of their starters?

Pretty annoyed that frontrowsports.eu didn't carry a stream of this one, but with free internet streams of questionable legality I guess you get what you pay for...

So boxscore take:

1) Huge win. Well done to Wojo - sounds/looks like he had a game plan and it was executed.

2) Good to see our big time player step up in a big time game.

3) I've said it before - Chartouny getting 25-30 is a must - he's unlikely to have many double-digit scoring games but we don't need a "score-first" PG.

4) A bit concerned this team is "Markus or die". Last year's Providence comes to mind. How many games to we win when Markus is on his  "C" game? How many will we need to win? How many "C" games will he have? (Although if this is him on the flu, maybe this IS a "C" game).

5)  If you would have told me Friday we were going to have 20 turnovers and a 12 point win I'd have said you were crazy.

6) I REALLY want to believe this can be a "turning the corner" game, really for the entire Wojo era. But we've been there before, and disappointment followed. Indeed, the fact that there was a thread debating if this was up among the "greatest Wojo-era wins ever" says it all. This was a good, solid, W. But winning against top-25 competition at home is something we should expect from this program (especially in "year 5"), not something that should have us thinking about making t-shirts for the students. It's a great stepping stone but now let's run off 5 more straight non-con wins.

I recall a certain Villanova game a couple of years ago....actually that was more of a D- game.

It seems to me that when one of our stars has an off game, the other guys step up. Sam had a C game on Saturday and it didn't matter.
