Nice to see everyone win at least one award for their hard work this season!

I'm pretty sure they find a way to do that every year.

I always did season-ending awards for the middle-school team I coached. I only gave out 4, meaning 6-7 players didn't get awards each year.

In my little speech before the awards I explained, "Everybody doesn't win an award. This isn't 2nd-grade rec soccer. This is competitive basketball. If I gave everybody an award, it wouldn't fool any of you anyway."

Not a one of them was scarred for life, and only one parent complained during the four years I was there.

How do three people win the most valuable award and three win the most improved?

With only 8 scholarship players left it should be the "these 3 are more valuable and more improved than the other 5 award"

That's exactly what I said to chick last night.  Cam must feel awful today.

The fact that we have gone away from the Oluoma Nnamaka Consistency Award is sad.

How was the event?  I was at Make A Wish but otherwise would have liked to attend.

I would have gone Rowsey for MVP (by a nose over Hauser), Theo John for most improved, and Anim for defensive player.  Others are fine, not that I would have any clue who deserves them.

Disagree.  Improved yes.  But Theo was by far the most improved.  Went from a foul machine against mid majors to a serviceable Beast center.

Year over year (really 2 years with the redshirt) I'd be inclined to agree (although Sam/Markus/Rowsey improved quite a bit over the offseason too) but start of season to end of season it's splitting hairs to me between the frosh. Each made great strides through the season. Totally fine with all 3 getting it.

Kudos.

It drives me crazy how some people want to "protect" kids' feelings by giving everyone an award.  But it really doesn't.  Most of the kids are not stupid, and realize what is going on.

We had a strange thing at my kids' high school.  We had the same coach for both boys and girls volleyball.  For the boys, he always gave everyone an award.  He had the typical MVP and MIP, added both an Offensive MVP and Defensive MVP, the "Unsung Warrior" (a tradition at the school for a kid who doesn't play much, but distinguishes him/herself in other ways), and a bevy of generic awards (the name escapes me). Each of the awards came with a big trophy.  The boys who won the generic award knew what it was all about.  When my son got that his sophomore year, he absolutely knew that it meant that his coach didn't think he had done anything to warrant a special award that year.  And he was completely fine with that (and so was I).  He didn't view it as an achievement or special.  He already had the "letter" for being part of the team, and didn't really feel like he needed anything else.  It was a waste of probably $10-15 from the athletics budget (x6 or so).

That same coach, for the girls, would have just three awards:  MVP, MIP and Unsung Warrior.  No other awards.  I never did understand the reason for the disparity, but I definitely preferred the way he handled it for the girls.  We've been through enough seasons with the coach in both boys and girls that we know it wasn't a one-time thing.

Another things that bugged me was when he wouldn't make the call between MVP candidates.  Generally speaking, all the kids on the team and all the parents knew who deserved it.  Put on your big boy pants and pick one.  I'm looking at you, too, Wojo.

Unless, of course, we should start running the Stud(s) of the Game.

Since freshmen got the award I assumed the award was for the period from start of the season to end of the season.  You could make an argument for Sacar even on that basis.  All three freshman and Sacar made great strides over the course of the season, but I think John was the most improved between the first and last game.

Not upset, just mentioning the people I personally would have given the awards to.  Don't really care what Wojo does.
