Not really an alum, but Rob Judson was head coach there for 6 years. Had two decent seasons, including 17-11 with a regular-season MAC title his next-to-last (2005-06), but he was shytecanned after going 7-23 his last year.

It's hard to blame them for firing a guy who had losing records in 4 of 6 seasons, including the final-year dumpster fire. But NIU apparently thinks they should be a hoops powerhouse. Truth is, they've had only three seasons with 17+ wins in the last 20 years, and Judson had two of them.

Great, great guy, too. Glad he's a Warrior now.

NIU thinks they should be an athletic powerhouse.  They were actively lobbying the B12 for membership just a couple years ago, and legitimately thought their Orange Bowl appearance a couple years ago was going to open such doors for them.

Of course NIU has always thought this.  They dropped out of the MAC in the mid 1980s thinking they could compete as an independent.  Like Notre Dame.  They ended up joining what is now the Summit League in all sports but football, and then rejoined the MAC about 20 years ago.

Not sure that's true so much as they knew they had a very solid streak going with football program and that was their best shot.

Full discolosjre I'm biased because my dad went to NIU and it's the only other school outside MU I root for

I know numerous people who work there. A couple years ago they definitely thought that their success would open doors.
