Joey out the rest of the season
« on: December 12, 2017, 08:21:38 AM »
Per Mark Miller, Joey Hauser will likely miss the rest of his senior season after having foot surgery. Expected to make a full recovery for next season.

So I’m guessing he won’t be playing his way to 5 star status?

Seriously feel bad for him and hope for a successful recovery.

What's the injury to his foot? A potential re-occurring type of thing?

It's a bummer for him to miss his senior season, but one has to assume that being healthy and ready to start his MU career is more important to him.

Finally donning the walking boot, today is the day that Joey finally committed to Marquette University.

Apparently it's a lingering issue from his football injury in his junior season.

I always think of this when I see foot injuries.

Bill Walton could have been one of the best ever.  John Wooden thought he was the best he ever had - and he had Kareem.

Andrew Toney is another guy who had his feet derail his career. He's been seemingly forgotten, but he was outstanding, All-Star player for the 76ers in the early 80s.

Michael Jordan also had a foot injury early in his career but that turned out OK. (Hey, it shouldn't all be doom and gloom!)

Most foot injuries aren't a huge deal for basketball players unless they go undiagnosed, especially with modern medicine.  Glad Joey is getting this taken care of now instead of trying to play through it and let it linger.  My guess is he'll be 100% and this specific injury won't hinder his college career (not to say he won't have a different injury, even another injury to the same foot, but my guess is it won't be because of this lingering issue).

This exactly. Fix it now so it isn't a lingering issue. Be 100% come November 9, 2018 for the opening of the new arena.

I think the difference is that Toney and Walton had stress fractures.  My understanding is that this injury is different from that.

BTW, I loved Toney's Sixers teams.  Dr. J, Bobby Jones, Darryl Dawkins (later Moses Malone), Maurice Cheeks and Toney.  Fun to watch.

I assume he can't avail himself of any of MU's resources for rehabilitation until he enrolls next year, right?

They have rehab centers in Stevens Point.

A stress fracture and a Jones fracture are both a fracture. Difference is rehab and surgical decisions have greatly advanced in 40 years, see Kevin Durant.

Oh really?

My point in asking is that it is a bit of an interesting situation--Marquette obviously has a vested interest in his recovery.  With its own players, MU has a host of resources (team doctors, PTs, strength and conditioning staff, etc.) that it can use to make sure that rehab goes well and that the player can use the recovery/downtime to be productive in other ways (strength training, etc.).  I assume, though, that they cannot offer any of this assistance or expertise until after he enrolls--but just wanted to confirm that.

Keeps him off the court and away from possible recurring concussion. Also, gets this injury fixed now, before he gets to Marquette.

I fully acknowledge the selfishness in saying those things, but it's also a matter of trying to put a positive spin on a less-than-positive situation.

Obviously, I wish Joey had been perfectly healthy his entire high school career, because those are great times in an athlete's life, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Feel awful for Joey. Kid seems like a competitor, sitting his senior season has got to be tough. Hope he recovers well.

Post game Saturday Joey was walking around no problem in no type of boot behind the MU bench where he was sitting, fully weight bearing and no crutches so at least that is positive.

I had the same injury about 20 months ago. I was able to avoid surgery by about a quarter inch (had the fracture been a quarter inch closer to the toe joint, I'd had to have gone under the knife), so my experience isn't entirely the same, but similar.

It took a while to heal, but I was  walking without a boot or limp within about two months, and it was 100 percent in about three months. I'm obviously not a college athlete, but I'm fairly active and haven't had any pain or setbacks since.
