sarcasm identifier
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:56:42 PM »
There's been lots of commenting lately about having some way to indicate that you're being sarcastic.

One approach has been to use colored text of some sort.  The main problem with this is that it often looks like a hyperlink instead.

A specific emoticon was another suggestion.  We could also use the  ::) that already exists.  If that is not agreeable then we may be able to add another one to the list above if a decent one can be found.  It would be preferable that any new emoticon is the same size as the currently available ones.
I did a quick search and a popular one that appears on many boards is this one:

Of course, there is the opinion from the other end of the spectrum that if it is not obvious from your writing that you're being sarcastic then you don't have any business being sarcastic in the first place.

Thoughts?  Additional suggestions?

I like the  ::) if the board feels we need something.

Otherwise the [sarcasm] [/sarcasm] is always effective.

Come on guys, is the teal font really that confusing?  ::)

I always took  ::) as well, the "eye rolling" icon.  It's what you did to your parents, as a non-verbal sign of disrespect.

On the forums, I think of it the same way, a sign of disrespect, where you want to say "go F yourself" but instead roll your eyes.

Maybe you could find a smiley with a tongue planted in a cheek.
