Very smart player and should have a very nice career at MU. No doubt he can be an important part in and 8 man rotation in future years. Not sure on how high ceiling is, but doubt if he suffers a setback like HC.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

59 three's and counting.  2nd most by a frosh at MU.  Two better than Diener, four better than Novak.  And no one talks about Sam because Markus destroyed the record with 76!

Pretty amazing company that Sam and Marcus have left behind.  So many great shooters on this team....

The greatest compliment that Sam received this year was the public endorsement of his skills by JJJ. JJJ is a connoisseur of good high IQ basketball which Sam has in spades.

I have always felt Sam would end up being a more valuable college player than Henry. He makes the people around him much more effective  which is a very valuable commodity . Sam has a very high ceiling .

Uh, I venture to guess 99% of Scoopers didn't watch the state finals last year.   ;D

I'd put some money down on that. To a charity of course.

I agree he has high ceiling, my point was not sure how high. Not sure if he ends up a four year starter or a really, really good four year starter. No doubt he has upside potential and high ball IQ helps in that regard.

JJJ has great basketball instincts.

He has terrible basketball IQ.

An important part in an 8 man rotation?

He's gonna be a starter for 3 more years barring injury.

Sam is a significantly better athlete than Novak ever was, even now.

Novak was a ridiculous shooter ... although, it turns out, not as good as Markus (at similar stages of their careers).

I have really enjoyed watching Sam grow as a player. Good (not great, but good) defender and rebounder. Willing passer. Good hoops IQ. And much improved the last few weeks at taking shots other than 3-pointers.

I don't know as he'll ever be a superstar but he already is a good player and he will get better. Almost a coach's dream in this day and age - a good 4-year player!

Much Better O Rating and similar D Rating than McDermott as a frosh.  Playing on better team than McDermott (Creighton was 4th in the MVC in his freshman year) in a better league.

I might be off base, but Sam reminds me of a poor man's Dan Issel.

Which would make him an important part of an 8 man rotation...

Would be fun to see him go off in the tourney - especially with little brother watching!

We agree on something. Your appraisal of Sam is spot on, IMO.

I said he is likely 4 year starter. My only question is how high of caliber of a player he becomes over that time. That said, wouldn't it be great Wojo brought in other guys that were even better than him? That is how you build a program, always recruiting better players.

lohaus

Sam is a rich man's Mike Bargen!  ;D ;D

Nah, for real,  I think he has a high ceiling.  Good defender, good shooter, good passer, good rebounder, high basketball IQ . . . . all in a freshman.  As far as athleticism, Cohen had way more athleticism and look what that brought.  I'm anxious to see what another off-season of strength and conditioning along with skill development brings for next year.

Sam, Markus and Matt were the best new three some since D, J and W.

Matt is new?

You know, Matt, as in Matt Carlino, as in Andrew Rowsey. (Well, that's my best guess.)

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

I actually like the Mike Bargen comparison except Sam shoots like Novak.  Elite shooting can definitely make him a star.  Especially as his post game and one dribble pull-ups keep developing.  He showed those skills in high school and I am encouraged that they are starting to show at the college level.

Plus Sam is so fundamentally sound he won't hurt you. I was bullish on Sam even before he committed but he's already better than I thought.  I pegged him as an 8/9 man as a frosh and fringe starter/6th man type by his sophomore year.

Upside as a senior, I could see 15/6/3 with efficient shooting, low turnovers, and solid D.

Oh, and Sam will still be a 4 next year, not a 3.  But position no matta.  Being on the floor matta.

Goose, I misunderstood your comment - I thought you meant he would be a useful bench guy.

I believe their will be better players than him on the team. I didn't mean to infer he will be an All-American type player. but he will be a double digit scorer and a solid rebounder and team player. Can't have enough of those kind of guys.

I might be off base, but Sam reminds me of a poor man's Dan Issel.

I see nothing similar about their games. Issel was a banger and a high volume scorer. He was not a 3 point shooter like Sam.

Issel averaged 26 points a game and 13 rebounds a game. He was a power player down low and much bigger than Sam. He was a high volume scorer mostly inside, who almost never took a 3 pointer. His shots went out to about 15 feet.  He was also a banger and a great rebounder.

Dude already reminds me of Kellan Dunham, and he is probably going to be a much better college player before all is said and done.  And I really liked Kellan Dunham.

Percentages, he's a dead ringer for Gordon Hayward.
