Big East Tournament Seed Watch Final Edition

I outline all of the possible 3-6 seed scenarios for tomorrow's games.

JamilJaeJamailJrJuan

Curious...if we win and PC loses, therefore giving us the 3 seed, what are scenarios for who play as the 6?

Hoping this is what happens (beyond the obvious fact that we get the 3), because I really don't want a damn day game next Thursday.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Nicely done TAMU.

I think there is one scenario missing where Xavier can play spoiler to Seton Hall.  If losses by Marquette, Providence, and Hall are coupled with a Xavier win, it would create a 4-way tie for 4th at 9-9.  Mini-conference winning percentages would be Providence .667 (MU x2, SH, X), Marquette .500 (X x2, SH), Seton Hall .500 (X, MU, PC), and Xavier .333 (PC, SH).  After slotting Providence 4th and Xavier 7th, Marquette would get the 5-seed over Hall via the Nova win.

There does seem to be one missing. Fortunately for me, Andrei wrote this one  ;D

Thanks, so more than likely SHU since I don't see them winning at Butler.  But ya never know.  I'd like to avoid SHU in the first game.  I want PC.

I thought once a winner of a mini-conference is determined, a new mini-conference of the remaining teams determines the next seed.

So after PC gets the 4 seed,  MU, SHU, and X would be in a new mini-conference of 3 teams to determine the 5th seed.  SHU would then win that one with a 3-1 record and gets the 5 seed.

Then MU and X would be in a tie for 6th, and we would get the 6 on the basis of sweeping X for the season.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we get 5th on the basis of beating Villanova.

We're 3-1 against X and Seton Hall.

Correct. And THEN we get the 5th seed due to beating Nova.

Actually, SHU is 2-2 in that mini conference. X is 1-3. So we get the 5th seed because we have the best mini conference record.

A new mini-conference is only created if there are more than 2 remaining teams tied. Let's assume St. John's also had the potential to finish 9-9 and they did which created a 5 team mini-conference. The best and worst are determined with no ties by their H2H record vs the other 4 teams in the mini-conference. Then there would be 3 teams in the middle still tied with the same W%. That's when you form a new mini-conference of those 3 teams. In the current situation, there are only two teams still tied so you proceed to the Two-Team ties tiebreaker of direct H2H and then record against 1 through 10 until an advantage is found.

Good stuff. Will be fun to see how this all shakes out.

Correct.  Per the BE tiebreaker rules:

QuoteAfter the top or bottom teams in a mini-conference are determined, the remaining teams are ranked by their record in the original mini-conference.  [The original mini-conference being the three or more teams tied in the conference standings.]

i. If there are any remaining teams tied by their record in the mini- conference , then head-to-head results will determine the higher seed.  MU and SH would both finish 3-3 in a 4-team mini-conference and split their season series.

ii. If the teams split two games, then proceed back to the two-way tie breaking procedure.  The next step after head-to-head for two-team tiebreaker is record vs. the highest team in the standings.  Advantage MU.

iii. If there are at least three teams remaining tied by their record in the mini-conference, they would then form a new mini-conference and follow the procedure again at the beginning of Step 1 (Multiple-Team Tie).

if for nothing else than to say we beat them once. Then Butler somehow.

Wow - good work going through all this, guys. If, God forbid, we don't win tomorrow. then I want it to work out so we play PC. We owe them, major league.

Playing for 4th - let's get 'er done!

St Johns just not good today, too bad.
Georgetown has basically given up on season.
Need a nice Butler win

But our game is just huge, have to get this one for everyone to take deep breath.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Games were really best case scenarios for the BE getting 7 in.

Strangely, I disagree..

If Seton Hall had lost, they would be sitting at 9-9 along with Xavier. It would be hard for the committee to really decide between either team, so they may have both gotten into Dayton...

Now, it's easier to pass on Xavier as the only 9-9 team out of the 7..

X will probably need to beat Butler in NYC to get in.

chapman

Don't see how we don't get seven at this point.  X is as close to the bubble as anyone, and they get to pick up another should-be-easy win over DePaul on Wednesday.

Would be cool if we could break the longstanding tradition and make some conference tournament noise, but Hall into Nova into Butler is about as rough a draw for us as it gets.
