Why Scoop has declined.

People, when following their team, would rather talk about good basketball than bad basketball.

The rash of new posters and returning idiots would seem to prove that statement false.

This board is totally unreadable.  Over-run with part-time posters that only show up when things get bad spewing garbage.

How do you regulars take this?  This crap is so unreadable one would go mad taking it seriously.

Ok, so the virtuous "regulars" are the only ones who should be allowed to post?  It's an internet message board for chrissakes.   I rarely post, but read Scoop daily.    I suspect there are more of us than there are of you.   And I've got news for you --- most of these threads (certainly the multi-paged ones) are almost entirely made up of one or two 5000 post "regulars" pissing at another 5000 post "regular" for 4 to 5 pages.   THAT is when Scoop REALLY is unreadable.
And you realize you propagate all those threads you deem annoying every time you respond with a comment declaring your annoyance?    It works like clickbait.    Actually this is even better --- You've started a brand new irritating and pointless thread in an effort to condemn irritating and pointless threads.   Amazing self-awareness.
So yeah, let's by all means limit Scoop commenting to only those posters with 10000 posts or more and the rest of us can marvel at your insight.   We can make Scoop the Berkeley of message boards.

Yukon didn't attack newer posters as a group, he attacked a limted subset: those who "that only show up when things get bad spewing garbage."  So his argument isn't the anti-newbie rant that you make it out to be.

Pants - I'm probably one of those 5000+ posters you're calling out for sometimes making the board unreadable - but I nevertheless LOVE your post. "Regulars" who denigrate newbies or irregulars "just because" are full of it.

I won't speak for others, just for myself. What doesn't thrill me is that some folks - and not all of them are newbies by a long shot - come on here ONLY when they want to tear down and denigrate. We beat Creighton and Nova ... crickets. We lose a couple ... attack!

I don't want anybody stopped or censured or anything like that. It's a free world. But we're being honest here, and that's one of my honest pet peeves.

There is a certain amusing humor in someone who has started nearly 1900 threads complaining about anyone else cluttering up the board though.

What this thread really needs is a couple of random links that don't actually address the question and some charts.

No not clutter.  In fact I would argue this place does not have enough interest topics right now.  If you look at the front page their is really only 3 or 4 topics spread over 25 threads.  Read one thread and you can skip 10 others, they are all on the same topic saying the same thing over and over.

Rather, it is one of those topics, the threads by mainly newbies with the hysterical sky is falling, everyone sucks and, anyone that can spell Marquette must be fired rants that make this board unreadable.  They only show up in the midst of a losing streak.

Again it is the newbies that are hysterical, and flood this place unreadable undirected negative emotion after a loss.  It is not the regulars that are hysterical.

I think everyone is in violent agreement with this point -- if MU Basketball plays competitively with the top teams in the country we are all happy.  If they don't many (but not all) are not happy.

Can't argue with this.

But there's a fairly decent-sized minority here who don't come on here to express their happiness after the Novas but come out in droves to say how doomed we are after the Johnnies.

Which makes we wonder sometimes if those folks have the ability to experience joy.

Obviously there are a lot of Trolls that come out after we lose a few. They are not fans of MU, but so be it.  It probably happens on other schools boards as well, but I don't know since this is the only one I read.

There are a percentage of manic type mU fans that feed off a big win and then think we are going to run the table, and a lose throws them into a manic hole and they spew how bad we are... all due to crazy expectations.  After we beat Nova, I had to chuckle at posts talking about how we could win most of our games, etc... I don't respond to these, but they seem so manic and unrealistic.

Then, some of the more steady knowlegable posters, bigger picture types who's identity isn't wrapped up in how MU performs and certainly not wrapped up in how MU performs from game to game, tend to stay away after a down turn due to the over reaction of the Manics and the Trolls.

So, scoop turns into a largely Troll and MU Manic fan board for a while after a few key loses. It is nice when we win and the Trolls stay away and we all know who most of those posters are... and many of us just ignore them.

Definitely the Trolls who are not MU fans, of course.  Throw in the Manic MU fans and it is a recipe to take over this board and make it unreadable... which means the more balanced posters stay away.  Scoop could improve by getting rid of the obvious Trolls, in my opinion.  Not the Manic MU fans, since they are actual MU fans.  Just the Trolls who clearly are not MU fans and enjoy spewing only after negative news or a down turn on the court.

This makes sense, GOO, and I agree with most of it.

My one nit is that I don't think most of "more steady knowledgeable posters" stay away after a loss because they don't want to deal with those on the extremes.

I consider brew, tower, Sultan, mu03eng, TAMU, Jae, chick, glow, rocky and many others (sorry if I didn't include you in my top-of-the-head list but you know who you are) to be very steady and knowledgeable folks who don't stay away. They keep trying to be reasonable and logical but sometimes get shouted out and called "slurpers" (or worse) if they simply use logic and reason.

I think there are a lot of people who vent here after losses. I know I'm guilty of it. When a loss puts me in a bad mood for the rest of the day, am I expected to talk about that with the missus?

It's all about the misery loves company mindset. Scoop is a place that some people go because they know other people are thinking the same thing they are. I'm sure this board isn't unique in that respect; we just happen to have a more unpredictable team than most, which probably causes more angst among the fanbase.

Thanks for the namecheck, '82.  I am one of the folks that does stay away from the board for a few days after a disappointing loss for a number of reasons.

First of all, I don't want to read all the vitriol, not only from the trolls and the newbies, but also from the same folks that after the last good win were posting dumb crap like "How high will our tournament seed be?" or "Will some other program woo Wojo away?"

Secondly, I know better than to express sadness and/or anger while the emotions are still raw and overwhelming the logical part of my brain.  I wish more folks would do that, both on this board and in general.

Thirdly, like every other one of my "loved ones"  (shout out to mujivitz   ;D), I know that occasionally they are going to disappoint me, but if they are truly trying to do their best, I am going respect the effort. Everyone already knows the team sucked, and I unlike many Scoopers, I am not going to claim that they would have won if I were calling the plays instead of Wojo.

Lastly, my personal happiness does not depend on the success of Marquette basketball.  It's a bonus if they win, and if they don't, it's "well, that sucks...let's move on and focus on something that is actually important."  I am not sure that is the case for every Scooper.
Have some patience, FFS.
