Jeff Capel focuses on his role as fill-in, but this could be an audition
5:05 p.m. ET Jan. 5, 2017

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/columnist/nicole-auerbach/2017/01/05/jeff-capel-duke-coach-mike-krzyzewski/96216060/

Jeff Capel isn't looking at it this way, which makes sense for an interim coach taking over a championship-caliber team during a pivotal point of the college basketball season. But, even so, Capel currently is auditioning for one of the most coveted jobs in all of college sports: The head basketball coaching position at Duke whenever Mike Krzyzewski decides to step down.

Other popular candidates — with strong Duke ties and years spent working for Krzyzewski before — include Chris Collins, who is currently trying to take Northwestern to its the NCAA tournament for the first time, and Steve Wojciechowski, who is the head coach at Marquette.

There's no reporting at all here, Smuggles.

Just a USA Today hack rounding up the usual suspects. A 10-year-old could have made the same assumptions.

You mean someone with a degree in Journalism.

Interestingly others from the Coach K tree were not mentioned

Mike Brey (ND)
Tommy Amaker (Harvard)
Johnny Dawkins (formerly Stanford now UCF)
Bobby Hurley (AZ State)

This article doesn't say what your title implies.  It's really about Capel's opportunity to "audition" as Coach K's successor.  It throws out some olds saws of other potential people with ties to K who might be considered.  Every article I've read about K's LOA has had the same info.  One even specifically said that Wojo and Collins don't yet have the resumes to be serious candidates.  This is just sloppy reporting by somebody who was told to write about Capels "opportunity."

You might want to stick with numbers, Heisy.  Reading comprehension doesn't appear to be your strong suit.
I mean, OK, maybe he's secretly a serial killer who's pulled the wool over our eyes with his good deeds and smooth jumper - Pakuni (on Markus Howard)

But if the title matched there article, it wouldn't get the number of clicks he wants.

Thing is who ever replaces K at Duke has a small window of opportunity to be successful. I can't recall many having success replacing a icon/legend.

Don't mean to take cheap shots at our coach, but why would Duke consider him over all the other options out there. And why does the speculation always involve coaches with Duke ties? It's a top 5 job, they can have nearly anyone they want. Can't imagine a coach that hasn't even made the NCAA tournament being considered.

They wouldn't. This is Capel's tryout.

Absolutely Right.

Except that I forgot to erase "dress" after having typed "dress rehearsal" and then deciding that a dress rehearsal is a trial run for someone who already has the position, while Capel is trying to show he's worthy of the position.

Right now I think he is the best Dukie for the job.

GGGG

Brey isn't really much of a Dukie.  He didn't play there and left K's staff over 20 years ago.

I think it's Capel's to lose.  If he doesn't do well, my guess is they go for an outside guy since nobody else (so far) has gotten anywhere close to what they'd expect at Duke.  Wojo's best chance would have been if he had stayed - or decides to go back - as an assistant waiting to get promoted.

I think our patience in Wojo will pay off...but likely not until after Duke replaces K.

I don't think this is true -- Duke job isn't your first head coaching gig.  I think that is why Wojo finally decided to leave personally.
