What did you listen to in 2016?
« on: December 20, 2016, 11:22:14 AM »
End of the year lists......... go.
For me, 2016 was the year of Hamilton.    Full stop.   Been binge-listening for the last 7 months.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

"I'm not going to throw away - my shot."

Interestingly, I see (or hear) my teenagers and all their friends constantly binge listen.  They couldn't wait to see Lin Manuel on SNL back in early autumn.  Still almost impossible to get tickets for on Broadway.

Listening?  I can't think of any new album releases?
  • That Sia/Sean Paul song Cheap Thrills was stuck in my head for a good 3+ months.
  • I started re-listening to a lot of grunge era rock especially any band from Seattle.  I think reading about the Temple of the Dog reunion spurred this.
  • Else I was just doing a lot of channel surfing on XM radio.

Heh, Hamilton is just fun. I memorized all the lyrics from the score "Alexander Hamilton."

Think my favorite line though is "Everyone give it up for Americas fighting Frenchman"

This year was all about 1970s R&B music like George Benson, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, etc.  For some reason that also morphed into ballads from the same era from the likes of Ambrosia and England Dan & John Ford Coley.

And then I spent a couple months seeking out some good live performances from Eric Clapton.

And I went through a Journey rediscovery phase.

It was a strange year.

And now they are headed to the R&R HOF.

I liked their early stuff, but then they sold out and became derivative, started having creative differences, and now can't agree on a single thing.

The new stuff I listened to the most was Hamilton, Kanye, Chance the Rapper, Sia, Sturgill Simpson, and Butch Walker.

Hamilton is incredible. Saw the show about 3 months ago. Haven't gotten it out of my head since.

It is amazing how Hamilton gets into your brain and won't leave.    My daughter and I play 'The Tao of  Hamilton" game with each other, finding a lyric to fit any situation.     Right now, we are competing to memorize the John Adams rap.

To Bethlehem-Carols and Motets for Christmas

performed by Kantorei of Kansas City

I found myself craving information this year, so lots of podcasts and an Audible subscription. I found the podcast Presedential to be a great weekly listen for interesting background on all our presidents, like Tyler's grandson is still alive...thought that was remarkable.

Maybe in the Cheap Trick sub-wing? It's like putting Harold Baines in the HoF.

Foo Fighters
New Order
Led Zeppelin

Some of that stuff comes off my Pandora station which is mostly late 80's and early 90's. I miss mock turtlenecks.

Props to Tower on these threads, I love the Superbar for stuff like this, learning about Scooper's and seeing recommendations on things.

Good stuff here.

Bad music year.

I think the only new music I loved was from Radiohead, Deftones and Childish Gambino.

Forgot Dillinger Escape Plan and ready like what Daft Punk is doing with Weeknd

Not much new stuff worth listening for me. Still the Mat Kearneys, Brett Dennans, and Mumford and Sons of the world.

J Cole and Chance the Rapper.

J Cole so impressive because his album is about to go platinum with no feature artists  on the tracks.

I find it interesting that flannel shirts are back in style big time this year also.  It maybe had something to do with my re-interest in grunge rock.

Ben Folds, "So There".  Amazing concertos and pop songs with yMusic.  Saw him at the Elgin Community College Theater in November and at Summerfest this year also.  Constantly in my  head.

Reading this thread my first thought was correct - "not only can i not think of a single new album that got me excited but i don't think i went to a single show that was memorable".  With the exceptions: Wilco was their normal awesome, and I do like The Record Company album though i can't tell if they are what the Black Keys wanted to be or a cheap knockoff.

2017 looks like a better year with The National putting out a new album and tickets already bought for Ben Folds with the KC Symphony, Mike Doughty, and RHCP all before June.

My revisit listening was Rage Against The Machine (perfect year for it) and STP after Weiland's death - i was surprised at how much i liked going back through STP.

Great threads to end the year.
