PF, I acknowledge all the failings.  Tie game, 90 seconds left, defensive stop, no rebound.  Perhaps not THE reason, but it sure didn't help.  So, by my count, first of four this year.

I'm sure it has something to do with quality of opponent, but we spent the first two games dribble penetrating, kicking out for open shots. I'd be less upset with the losses if it looked like we had any clue what we were doing on offense or defense.

Seems like all of our baskets come in transition or in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock.

Marquette won the first two (+exhibition +scrimmage) convincingly by Wojo subbing lots of players, especially when the start taking dumb shots or turning over the ball.  The past two days?  That all changed, and I'm not sure why.  I'm not sure Sandy is the answer, but certainly give him a little time to help keep everyone fresh and keep going uptempo.

Disappointed with the past two days, but trying to stay optimistic.

mileskishnish72

Agree - there was ample opportunity to change things up on Young and nothing happened. I don't get the feeling that Wojo is capable of in-game modifications. felt the same during the first half last night.

I would love to see a start to finish well executed game plan this Tuesday.  MU can definitely make a move this season, I see a lot of potential, but it needs to manifest itself on the court.  IUPUI blasted Howard today, they aren't going away easy on Tuesday.

How do you define good team? They were a tournament team last year and have a good chance to be one again this year. I'd sure love for Marquette to be at that level.

Marquette will never again be at that level as long as Wojo is coach. His teams don't learn because he doesn't teach. He'll be back as an assistant at Duke in two years.

TurdFerguson

My couple takeaways

1. What is this offense? It's like watching the NBA. Everything was isolation until they hit a double team and then it was game over. I'd rather have the Crean 'pass it around the perimiter for 25 seconds' than this junk.

2. JJJ... I'm not sure I've seen a player moping around as much as he did in that game. Even when they were in a winnable position, he looked mopey because he wasn't getting his individual stats.

3. Individual stats: Is it me or does JJJ and Reinhardt look like they are just trying to put up numbers?

4. Sweet last play for a 5'10" guy to drive against two monsters.

5. Defense is another story, starts with Fischer that obviously can't play defense without fouling.

DienerTime34

Other than Mike Brey, what former Duke assistant has done anything with a head coaching gig? Wojo's top accomplishment in his coaching career so far has been sitting next to Coach K, looking concerned about stuff.

Clearly, he cannot yet teach a team to execute when it counts. Also, why has he refused to bring any experience to his staff? Someone who has actually accomplished something in their coaching career? We could use it right about now.

But I guess we can pick up a bunch of wins against IUPUI and others and tout another 20-win season this year. Hooray.

Is he still at Fresno State?  We could make him an offer he can't refuse.

Are short shorts back?  I guess they are, they were just as bad when I wore them in 1989

MU done in by a 6'8 forward.    Weird.

MU done in by a 6'8 forward.    Weird.

He's listed as 6ft 9, 240.  But he is extremely talented and just had his way with a skinny up front MU backline.
Thats why I was really hoping MU got that Hashan French kid at 6ft 7, 250, because he is the type that MU really, really needs.  Oh well, Wojo has his shooters.

tower912

My point still applies.

I've wondered it before but I'm now really starting to question Wojo's ability to answer counters. I think he can gameplan pretty well but once the other team adjusts, he seems to have little to no answer. This is, again, why I'd love to see a crusty veteran coach on the bench.

Also, Wojo stuck with Rowsey too long tonight. He had the hot hand for a while but his last FG came with 9 minutes left. It's like leaving your #4 starting pitcher in too long. At a certain point, you've got to realize that you've gotten all you're going to get out of him and bring in a fresh, more capable player. Rowsey is an energy guy off the bench he's going to hit the occasional 3. If he's expected to put the team on his back down the stretch, it's not going to end well.

On the missed 3/o-rebound that tower has mentioned, Hauser was the only player to come even remotely close to getting a body on someone and blocking out. That's unacceptable.

Pitt is not a good team period.  We let them back in the game by playing subpar defense all game (as evidenced by our inability to stop them without fouling) + weird subs on offense.

Unless the defense changes dramatically we are in for more hand wringing.

Our deficiencies all seem to be coachable things.

Bón Season everyone.

One thing I don't understand is that Fischer is trying to avoid his 4th foul but he is not the focal point on the offense.  What is the point of playing him then?  You are basically playing 5 on 4.5 on defense but his offense is not that critical as we are not consistently getting him the ball.

MUfan12

They gambled on assistants thrice before and came up aces. Not this time.

This is a really poorly coached basketball team. I know it won't happen, but after they miss the tournament again, I'm ready for a change.

Great question. This might be the worst coached game in the Wojo era. That in itself is quite telling.

It won't but it should.  The direction this program is headed is a little unsettling.  Little discipline and lack of fundamentals are surprising since it was a point of emphasis all off season

We got way to excited over mu when they were only 2-0

Probably, and we're probably too down on them now.

Too early for a change, BUT, does anyone know what Cuonzo Martin did that resulted in him reportedly "bombing" his interview when he was THE candidate? He seems to be doing pretty well, especially as it pertains to recruiting, at Cal thus far. I'm not saying he is the answer but am curious as to why a NCAA tournament head coach had the job and instead MU went with an assistant from a program with a solid track record of turning out assistants that are mediocre coaches (Snyder, Henderson, Collins, Dawkins).

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

Stopped following when Pitt cut the lead to 54-47 since the wife wanted some help.  But felt the game starting to slip away at that point.

Checked back when Pitt was up 75-72 with 2:23 left, then final.  Couldn't even bare to follow down the stretch.  Just gut wrenching.

Think I need a Scoop break.  Not sure when I'll be back.  Hope you are all well in the meantime.
