NCAA leadership is a group of university presidents. They tend to care a great deal about the image of their schools both individually and as a group, and they tend to be very inclusive by nature. Sure, even "liberal," for those who like to label everything.

This move by the NCAA was quite predictable, and very well could be followed by the ACC making a similar move, costing NC tens of million$ more as well as more jobs. Political decisions have consequences.

Also, this entire thread should be in the Superbar. It has absolutely nothing to do with Marquette basketball.

The courts will decide.  There are 21 states currently suing the federal gov't.  If those states win, the NCAA is going to have a tough time finding places to have games.

This entire thread shouldn't exist.  Political.

I'm all for the decision to play fewer NCAA tourney games in North Carolina.  Politics schmolitics, I don't know why anyone would complain about this move regardless of lean or affiliation.

I can change that- gee, if Marquette has a game in North Carolina, there is going to be so much confusion at the games...everyone using whichever bathroom and suddenly getting the crap kicked outta ya trying to drop a deuce in the wrong venue?  Poor dude running down the hall with a prairie dog chasin him ducks into the closest closet and finds a couple of biker dudes waiting for him.  Oh well, so much for that experience....umm, clean-up in aisle 7 puhhhlease!

But when ya think about the Caroline's rule as it stands now, they are leaving less of a carbon footprint with less air travel 'ey?

We agree, chicos.

Strangely enough that was my first reaction, too.  A rather unusual first post.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

There you have it.

Obviously, the pols here in my adopted state were so naive they thought there would be little to no backlash. They didn't anticipate the jobs leaving, jobs never arriving, events and conventions canceling, CEOs and association directors recoiling, etc.

You pass a law -- in a matter of hours, with zero debate -- that not only legalizes but encourages discrimination. And then you act like it's everybody else's fault when CEOs, university presidents and others who value inclusion take their companies and events elsewhere. It's "political correctness run amok," because political correctness somehow is the opposite of blatant discrimination. In reality, it's a perfect example of "let the market decide."

This really was a classic case of cutting off the nose to spite the face by NC's lawmakers and governor.

And for what? A symbolic, unenforceable, obviously discriminatory law.

As an NC resident who likes having major events in my city and state, and who certainly doesn't like seeing high-paying jobs leave, I get no satisfaction out of this at all. I am ashamed to have elected "leaders" who act the way they do.

If that's too political ... well ... this is a political thread. So let me be the first to say:

Probably the best description I have heard is "a solution searching for a problem that doesn't exist, championed by a few to the detriment of many."

Well stated.

Here in Charlotte, we keep hearing stories about transgender men - people who were born female but now identify as male. They look, talk and act like men, and many have facial hair. Yet according to HB2, they HAVE TO use the ladies room. It's farcical.

Unemployment is near an all-time low here in NC, taxes have been reduced (kind of; fees have been raised), teacher pay is up so now we're at least ahead of Mississippi and a few other bottom-feeders, more people are moving into the state than moving out, salaries are going up (albeit slowly), there is a budget surplus. Given all of that, the governor should win re-election in a landslide. But he has tied his fate to HB2 and a few other unpopular, unnecessary social policies, and he trails fairly significantly in the polls.

Anyway, back to the original point of the thread ...

For all the reasons stated earlier by myself and others, I seriously doubt there will be major implications for Duke, UNC or college basketball as a whole. The only major "victims" here are NC basketball fans and businesses that rely on big events to bolster their bottom lines.

The NCAA and ACC had the kind of protest that usually turns out to be most effective -- a protest with their wallets.

Far more effective than Kaepernick's. (Although I defend his right to stage his protest, too.)

You're right.  It's about anti-gay bigotry.

Warriors10

Arguments that the NCAA needs to stay out of this are mind-boggling.  All the time you have private corporations that donate money to influence politicians - Republicans never seem to mind that.

All-in-all, in a capitalist-society, bigotry actions are punished.  As they should.
