Hoop Dreams

Was on Turner Classic Movies and I watched last night for the first time in a lot of years. Incredible to think it's been 25 years since it all took place. A few things that struck me:

1. Bo Ellis just seems like the coolest person in the world although it might have helped that he was standing by Kevin O'Neill.

2. During Gates' home visit they played a video with the "Time of My Life" song from Dirty Dancing. It really seemed to impress them. Might be something for Wojo to try out.

3. I always forget that Amal McCaskill played with Gates in high school.

4. The one part that was the most ridiculous to me was the complete lack of planning (mostly by Agee it seemed)  if the NBA didnt happen. The part near the end when he's at a juco and says that if he doesn't make it he'll probably become an architect or stand up comedian was cringe worthy but probably not worse than a lot of these kids.

I wish I could find the article, but I read somewhere that a crazily high percentage of inner-city boys think they will be able to make a living as a professional athlete.  I want to say it was between 25% and 50%.  Now I am all for having dreams, but all kids need to be taught to have a realistic Plan B.

I've read the same thing.

But when you grow up chronically poor, it is to be expected. Basketball is seen as a way out, just as boxing used to be for poor Irish and Italian kids.

when I taught at a Title I middle school, I noticed that in one class of ~25 students, nearly every boy wanted to be a professional skateboarder.  When I asked their backup plans, they had none.  Sadly, most never likely finished high school
