Yeah NCAA rules and regulations are pretty ridiculous.  I was fortunate enough to get close to the Pepperdine men's volleyball coaching staff when I was still coaching, and their coach (Marv Dunphy) is someone that I compare to as the volleyball version of Coach K.  Super classy guy, 5 NCAA Championships, coached the men's national team to an Olympic gold medal in 1988, only coach ever in men's volleyball to win all 4 major world tournaments in his quad (4 year period leading up to the Olympics), etc.  I was out at nationals coaching one season and I just wanted my younger brother to have the chance to meet him so he could down the road say "Hey, I met Marv Dunphy" when he was looked at as the greatest men's volleyball coach ever.  My brother at the time was a 17s player playing at Nationals, and NCAA rules are that coaches can't talk to a player until their 17s season finishes, so my brother was about 2 days shy of that.  Without even considering the rule, I introduced my brother to Marv, and Marv had to literally say, "Hi.  I'm sorry, per NCAA rules, that's all I can say to you."  Trust me when I say, Marv had no interest in a 5'8" (very good, but still 5'8") setter.  But those are the rules...

Marquette's compliance office informed Loyola Blakefield that Wojciechowski, a Cardinal Gibbons and Duke graduate, cannot speak at the event, which was titled "An evening with basketball legend Steve Wojciechowski."

Per NCAA regulations, the event has been re-titled "An evening Skyping with basketball legend Steve Wojciechowski's barber."

The Blue and Gold Auction has a number of "experience" items they auction off (honorary cheerleader for a day, 18 holes with the golf coach, etc.)  Any of them in which you have a 1% chance to actually make eye contact with a member of any coaching staff is off limits to kids in grades 9-12.

To make an omelette, you have to break some eggs.  Wojo not being able to speak at this event seems harsh, but the reality is anytime you try to put some common sense exceptions into compliance rules, you end up with creative coaches finding a way to turn them into loopholes. 

Unintended consequences?  Sure, but any exceptions the NCAA might try to put in to limit collateral damage would also contain the seeds of making the rule ineffective.  It sucks, this is the reality of regulating a hyper-competitive market for Division I basketball talent.

Again, the NCAA is a membership body....the schools make the rules.  Blame the schools.  The NCAA doesn't make rules on their own, they all come committees of members of the schools, they are voted on by the membership.
