1) Brilliant and well written, mostly because he agrees with me.

2) Do you think for a moment that he doesn't have any inside insight?

We R Final Four

Big Mac nailed it. Great point--the number of people who go to Vegas anyway to watch the later rounds of the NCAA.

If they actually get the teams that are mentioned in the article, then I change my mind and think it is a good event for us.

With all the automatic bids landing in the NIT many "brand names" should end up in the Vegas16.

Well written and logical article that makes a compelling case for the tournament. One has to wonder if those 80 oz. servings of prime rib had something to do with Jim's keen thought process?

mu_hilltopper

Hmm .. what would everyone think of adding JMac's blog to the scraper?

Looks like it's only 20% MU related .. maybe Superbar would be the target.

Thoughts?

Based on his Twitter feed, Jimmy seems to spend quite a bit of time in Las Vegas.  Likes to hang out in the Peppermill Lounge and the Pinball Hall of Fame.

Not that I am cyberstalking him or anything....

Ok, glow. I'm in. I think this could be a great thing.

If you guys attend let me know so we can meet up for a beer and Chick can insult me directly to my face!

Is there a tv deal for the Vegas 16?

My only issue with the Vegas Sixteen is that it smacks of the big boys trying to shut out the small schools.  As long as no "big school" turns down an NIT invite and decides to play the Vegas Sixteen I am okay with tourney.  But if a school elects to go to the Vegas Sixteen over an NIT that will be a shame.

I am a fan of level playing fields.  That is what makes the NCAA tourney fun that the little schools have their shot.  The NIT is like that right now.  All of the small schools, sans maybe a few that are in really bad conferences, deserve the NIT since winning the regular season is an accomplishment.  And even in the 25th best conference the top school is pretty decent.

The Vegas 19 is a privately-run tournament.  They can  invite whomever they want.

Every small school has two chances to go to the other tournaments. For most, those are chances they wouldn't have if they were strictly at-large.  I think that is more than fair.

Almost by definition, you can't be both a fan of collegiate athletics and level playing fields.

Marcus92

It's more like a preseason or early-season tournament (of which there are dozens now, many invented just for TV). Big-name schools sell tickets and get ratings.

Pretty smart approach, in my opinion.

I agree that the small schools have the NCAA, NIT, and other tourneys.  I actually like the current arrangement.  I also don't have a problem with the Vegas tourney.  I just think it will be a shame if this Vegas tourney ends up being a big school tourney that pulls those big schools away from the NIT.  If the Vegas ends up just being another tourney for schools who don't make the NIT,  I am all for it.

After reading this, I'd prefer Vegas with a bunch of big-name teams to the NIT with a bunch of mid-majors and worse.

Big name teams?  If you go by the "also considered" in the latest bracketology, you have Arkansas, Clemson, Davidson, ETSU, Kansas State, Long Beach State, LSU, Marquette, Memphis, Northwestern, Rhode Island, Richmond, Texas A&M-CC, UC Irvine, IC Santa Barbara, William and Mary.

The only ones of these that can be remotely considered "big name" are Arkansas and Memphis.

It's all relative. We're not talking about the NCAA tourney, after all. But in addition to Arkansas, Memphis and Marquette, LSU and Kansas St. have pretty good basketball pedigrees. And among the mid-majors, Davidson, Long Beach State, Richmond, UC-Irvine and Santa Barbara are quality programs.
