Ditka, I should have said coming into tonight.

I wasn't criticizing what you said, this is a rare case where losing helped a team's at large resume. Obviously they'd rather have clinched the auto bid of course.

Buzz Williams' Spillproof Chiclets Cup

Wednesday games featuring #1 seeds

Hampton vs. Morgan State (MEAC Quarterfinal)
Texas Southern vs. Alabama A&M (SWAC Quarterfinal)

Also, update the first post to reflect that Yale is dancing.

I wonder if Villanova is getting nervous.

Nah, they know they are for sure in the NIT so they can play relaxed

Buzz Williams' Spillproof Chiclets Cup

Thursday games featuring #1 seeds in one-bid conferences

Akron vs. Eastern Michigan (MAC Quarterfinal)
UAB vs. Western Kentucky (C-USA Quarterfinal)
Weber State vs. Portland State (Big Sky Quarterfinal)
San Diego State vs. Utah State (Mountain West Quarterfinal)
Hawaii vs. Cal State Fullerton (Big West Quarterfinal...Go Warriors!)

It's in MU's interest if the teams listed first win.

Buzz Williams' Spillproof Chiclets Cup

UAB loses to Western Kentucky 88-77.

Akron beats Eastern Michigan 65-63. Will play Central Michigan/Bowling Green winner in semifinal on Friday in Cleveland.

Assuming that Wichita State and St. Mary's get at-large NCAA bids, nearly a third (10) of the NIT's 32  spots are already spoken for.

UAB was the only loss.  We need some of these others to keep moving forward.

And while this starts to become pretty difficult to measure, let's try to take note of other NIT type teams that lose.  There's no shame for MU losing to a Top 5 team but the slots are certainly limited.

Stony brook just won. First ever tourney bid, and helping us out as the #1 seed in their conf.

Dayton lost.

As long as St. Joe's or VCU wins it, that's fine. All three were getting at large berths anyway.

Happy for Jerry. Always good to see a coaching alum do well.

Happy to see Jerry do well. But that probably kills any chance we have at the NIT.

It's over.  Vegas or nothing. The NIT has completely shot itself in the foot. Nobody wants this much double representation from all these one bid conferences. This really hurts the mid majors most of all.

They have a committee of former coaches and AD making the selections. Supposedly they are looking to create good matchups. So I still think there is a chance.

I hope you're right.  As it stands a lot of quality basketball teams will be home and TV ratings will be 0.0.

Put our own interests aside for a second. If your the NIT you want the most attractive teams that will draw the most fans to the preliminary rounds. So for example a team like Creighton which sells out its 17,000 arena every night, even for teams like North Texas, becomes a very attractive candidate.  While our attendance is not at the highs, it was still 13,308 which is impressive in the abstract. Also our brand name is recognizable if we are stuck playing road games. It is not a sure thing by any means, but I think we are going to one of the handful of teams seriously in the discussion. At the end of the day the NIT wants teams that are going to be attractive at MSG in the final four. Again our fan base and dedicated alumni works to our advantage there.

Think good thoughts and sometimes they will happen.
