Was listening to Gary Parrish's podcast (long drive in wee hours and had exhausted scrambled eggs) and they were talking about how Archie miller is going to take the Shaka path and wait and wait till the job he wants opens - and Parrish chimes in and says he agrees unless their issue with the suspended player (suspended a semester by admin despite no charges brought) causes a rift between him and the administration and he leaves for something unexpected.  His comp was Buzz leaving. Basically said he knows personally that when MU suspended him one game and forced him to fire that assistant Buzz was out the door in spirit and otherwise would have stayed much longer

Well, since Parrish and Bert are Butt Buddies I guess we now know the definition of "messin' with happy..."

Things started going downhill when Fr Wild retired the first time and Pilarz came aboard. Then LW arrived and the avalanche began. Public reprimands and a lecture over an innocent (and funny) dance in West Virginia, an assistant and good friend fired over a t shirt and a ride (yes he lied, but he was also set up) and a suspension (for nothing other than LW wanting to be a prick and publicly bring Buzz down) were just part of the adversarial atmosphere that LW created. By the time the board wised up and canned Pilarz and Larry the damage was done - they couldn't put the genie back in the bottle.

This is the only explanation that ever made sense. All those claims about it being because the conference was changing or because he was escaping possible violations were unsatisfying red herrings. I believe he would have stayed had Pilarz/LW not come through the swinging doors. But in the final analysis, it's to everyone's benefit he didn't stay: he's in a place that will give him wider latitude to do his kooky Buzz thing and we're back on the path to perennial power.

Agree completely with this analysis.

Well stated, Lenny.   Ultimately, Buzz won the battle with Larry but the damage had already been done and was irreversible.    It was my perception that LW thought an episodic problem was a systemic problem and hence handled so many things incorrectly.    While forgetting important donors' names.

I may have this wrong but I believe a unreported sexual assault claim figured into this as well.  As to who was at fault for that and to what degree I cannot say, but I believe it may have been a factor as well.

The whole thing is a case study in what happens when you have a weak leader in my mind (and I am speaking about Pilarz).

In my opinion, Bill Scholl has been a breath of fresh air at AD. Unlike Larry, it seems like he wants the spotlight on the university and not himself.

Yup, Marquette has done an unbelievable job managing the situation post Pilarz, with Lovell, Scholl and the new provost. I wonder how many other classes can say they had 3 different presidents during their 4 years.

This is well said, Lenny. But there was Bert's inappropriate contact with the person claiming sexual assault. While I believe his intentions were good I believe he mishandled this and some other off-court issues.

They really didn't try that hard to put the genie back either. While they were smart to get rid of LW and SP, they were pretty tired of Buzz at that point too.

I've mentioned this before, but it's no coincidence that during Marquette Madness (the one following LW's firing), Brent came out to country roads, doing his "WVU dance."

I don't think this is quite accurate. Buzz did win the battle with Larry, but when Cords stepped back in temporarily, Buzz expected everything to go back to how things were before Pilarz and Larry were hired. Cords and the board took a different approach, basically a "wait and see" to get to the end of the season and then revisit the issues.

Buzz won the battle with Larry, but it was the uncertainty of how things would go post-Larry that were more the issue, and when stuff didn't go back to normal, he started looking for the first marginally decent opportunity.

Still have to imagine he would have been much happier had he waited a little longer, because the Tennessee and Missouri vacancies that opened up a bit later both would have been far more attractive and better fits for Buzz, in my opinion.

GGGG

I'm not sure "wait and see" is right. I think they weren't going to do anything to reward his antagonistic behavior. They gave Wojo much of what Buzz wanted (better living facilities, etc.) almost immediately after he started. Buzz IMO wasn't going to get that.

"living facilities"?  you did see the house that buzz lived in, didn't you?  it was a small palace, but a palace it was.  nothing to be ashamed of there

Wait and see might not be the right phrasing...more that they wanted to wait until after the season before they started addressing changes, and he expected that Larry being gone would lead to things going right back to how they were before Pilarz and LW arrived. I think had Buzz stuck he could have got some of those things, but they weren't willing to immediately acquiesce to everything he wanted just because Larry was out the door.

Pretty certain reference is to facilities for players.   Buzz (and Wojo)  are not directly dependent on MU for housing,  mainly just loads of US dollars for doing their jobs.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to athlete housing.
