Practice used to start on the 15th. Now I think the rule is it starts the Friday before the 15th. I am not sure what happens, if the 15th is on a Friday.
Last year October 10th was the Friday before.
This year October 9th is the Friday before.
Outside of leap year the dates move by one every year. Next year the 8th would of been the Friday before and therefore the 15th would also be Friday. However, with next year being a leap year the 15th will not be on a Friday.  In 2016 the 15th is a Saturday, so the Friday before would be the 14th.

Practice is permitted beginning 42 days (6 weeks) prior to your first game. The first game can't be played until the second Friday in November. It is your regular season schedule that dictates the practice calendar.

This year the first day of allowable practice is Friday, October 2 because our first game is Friday, November 13.

The date of 'Marquette Madness' could be anytime from October 2 forward. They chose October 9. Some schools will do it a different date.

Now, chick is a little older than some of us and she would remember the old days (OK, the rule changed only three years ago, but...) when practice could start roughly a month before the season started...

Under the prior rules, you had ~24 practices over a month.. now you have 30 allowable practices over 6 weeks.. more required off days.

At least it isn't the same night as the Confederations Playoff. First time in years they haven't had Madness the same night as a major USA Soccer match.
