Mike - next time through Seattle let me know and I'll get us some passes for Chambers. It is a ball buster of a course but a genuine treat. My recommendation on playing Chambers is to listen to the caddy, embrace the good moments, and flush the bad stuff immediately. One of the best links courses I have ever played, anywhere.

that is the same way they say you should approach whistling straits up in haven, near sheboygan/kohler.  at 7800 yards, replicates ancient seaside courses of the uk and ireland.  it will beat the schmit out of you if you let it.  follow keefe's recommendations and you'll have a blast.  hosting the pga championship in august for the 3rd time in the last 11 years.  a whole different type of golf

what a great golf event chambers held this year-as much frustration as the course provided, that was a battle-could you imagine having to go 18 more on that emotional grinder?  those guys had to be psychologically spent.  felt sorry for dj as he's come so close so many rimes, BUT, ya'll saw what he had to go home with afterwards-that should take the sting out a little bit- heyna?  i think they also call her the "great one" but for different reasons   what a way to get your putter straightened out

Amazing drama on the back 9 last night.  I really like Spieth but wanted to see DJ drop that eagle putt to win.  Always nice to see someone confront their problems and come out of it a better person.  Holding his new baby along with a U.S. Open trophy and Paulina by his side would have been a great scene.

Phil is more generous to his fans and to golf fans in general than any big name on the tour. A lot of pros who barely tolerate their adoring fans (think Tiger, among others) can't stand him for that. They think signing autographs for an hour after he competes makes him a phony. I think it makes Lefty look generous while they look arrogant and small. He can be a little goofy and occasionally comes up with stuff that makes you scratch your head - kind of like Charles Barkley. I like him, too.

And that very well may be the case.  Really I don't watch golf at all, so when I see "Phil Mickelson," I think "Oh the guy who bitches about taxes."  I'm sure that doesn't capture the entirety of who is he as a person.

The layout of Chambers is beautiful and I would love to play there someday.  Have tried to get some buddies to do a west coast trip to either there of Bandon Dunes but haven't made it yet.  Sadly the criticism of Chambers' greens was loud and legitimate.  They will have to get that figured out to host another major.

After I read how he tips a kid with a lemonade stand $99, and tips a $100 routinely, that is pretty cool.  If not for ego, he is helping out the common man and gets how that might help some of the people he comes in contact with.

If in doubt, ask the eight Tour players who had their wife bent over a table by DJ during his coke-fueled party days how virtuous of guy he is. If you are a believer in karma, DJ's consistent ability to choke at the final hurdle of a major championship seems apropos.

Chambers greens are like sandpaper by design. Having said which, they have had issues since opening with local native grasses overtaking the fescue so they do need to come up with a meaningful solution.

While I love Chambers the best part of my game is in my wedges and they are utterly useless on most of the greens there as nothing sticks. I watched a buddy hit a 60 from about 40 yards out on #7. He hit the green but it rolled up the embankment then came back down the slope...his next shot was from 200 yards. While that might seem silly it reminds you that the course plays completely different from most other places.

If you come to the west coast I would say that Bandon rivals Monterey for stellar golf but I would do Pebble Beach first. My favorite there is Spyglass but Spanish Bay is very, very good.

People complaining about the sandiness of Chambers forget that the Scottish definition of 'links' is the sandy soil along the coast. Links courses by definition are supposed to be sandy.Hearing these guys whinge and whine about the greens would make a Scotsman laugh. Anyone who has played on a links course in Scotland knows that there is sand every where and that there is never a good lie.

I have played Whistling Straits and it beat the g-d crap out of me ... but I still had fun. Chambers kind of reminds me of that.

The single most difficult course I ever played was Beverly Country Club on Chicago's far south side. You wouldn't believe how tight the fairways were. The place has 3,000 trees and I was behind every one of them! And when we get together, I'll tell you who my playing partner was -- the course beat the shyte outta him, too!

also, anybody have any information as to watching practice rounds on wednesdays before a major starts?  i heard that's the way to go as it is a ton cheaper and a ton less crowded/you can actually see the players you want to see.  i'd love to just see whistling straights so i figure why not do it when the best players in the world are playing their practice rounds?

do you need a ticket?  can you just walk around as you wish?  i've heard the only downside is you don't know what time each player will be out.

hey-nick hardy made it!!  tied at #28 in at +2  he beat a lot of very good players thru 2 rounds.  would have been really cool to see the hammer make it

Nick was actually +2 with 4 holes to play Friday but bogeyed 3 of his final 4 holes. Barely made the cut at +5 and was first on the course Saturday after finishing around 9:15 Friday night. He had to play alone Saturday (an odd number made the cut). He struggled, tripled #16 and shot 77. But he bounced back Sunday, shot 68 (8th best that day) and finished 52nd. Great experience for Nick and his family.

Interesting - does the USGA and/or PGA always assign someone to play with the final guy to make the cut when its an odd number? Can the player pick someone?
