.490 from three- woah- at 6 1 maybe he can at least come in for a few mins and hit some bombs- here's hoping we get something out of him later in his career

I do not expect walk-ons to see playing time.   If they do, something has gone horribly wrong OR they far exceed expectations OR they are playing for Tom Izzo.

Let's hope not. Our last walk on we got something out of was Jake Thomas and I don't think I'm alone in saying I would've preferred us to not have him on the floor that much.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Looks like all bases covered.

1)  Walk-ons no playing time expected.
              But if:

2) Something gone horribly wrong
3) Far exceeded expectations
4) Playing for Tom Izzo

Agreed. Every once in a blue moon you'll find that magical walk-on that blossoms into Alex Barlow. There are probably at most 1-2 of those players in the country at any given time that can go from walk-on to reliable high-major starter.

Most likely, this guy (and Marotta, and the Maches, and any others) will be more Frozena than Barlow. If you strike gold, great, embrace it once it happens, but otherwise no walk-on should be counted on for anything more than a practice body that takes some garbage time minutes.

4everwarriors

They're walk-ons not McD AA's. Might get off the pines vs. Pine Bluff, hey?

If we're going to walk-ons, lets get one with height. Does not play in a tough league. We can do better than this.
Why can't we get a player, from the afore mentioned list-- of Brendan Bailey, Coffey, Delaurier, Lamar Stevens,
Huerter, Tyler Cook or Emmanuel Malou (JC Player)? I bet you Bucky is laughing his head off. Thinking of TJ Schlundt,
6-5, excellent shot, potential to be a good player.

You go get one with height, Earl.  We'll be here waiting.

I'm guessing - but, admittedly, I don't know for certain - that players that are being recruited highly (since they are top 100 players, for the most part) are not going to agree to come to Marquette as walk-ons.

P.S. Regarding TJ Schlundt, he was recruited to be a "preferred" walk-on.  These guys come in knowing that although the school wasn't willing to offer a scholarship at the start, they'll have an opportunity to earn one, if they prove themselves once on campus.  "Big" walk-ons are pretty much unheard of because the combination of height and athleticism is so rare that they are pretty much guaranteed a scholarship, somewhere.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I think you're seriously overestimating the level of "recruiting" that goes on for walk-ons.  Nearly every walk-on is there for school first (on his dime) and hoops second, so it isn't exactly like coaches have the leverage they do with scholarships.  You start with kids who are there, and take the best you can find.

Do you know what a walk on is? Your post makes zero sense. The only people laughing their heads off is everyone that has read your post so far. Just to be clear.

you're right - I really hope he's not some 1 in a 1000 walk on that sticks around the team for 4 years busting his hump and earns some PT later in his career by exhibiting a knack to hit threes when our team needs a boost because......well, because he's not some 4-5 star recruit.  That would really suck.

Man, folk's pessimism and general proclivity to think everything is mutually exclusive is astonishing.  And we're not talking about Jake Thomas - we're talking about Christian Haffner.

I hope you are not trying to describe Jake Thomas here because can be described, at best, as exceedingly charitable.  He wasn't here four years.  He didn't exhibit much of a knack for hitting threes.  He did work very hard though.

The pessimism is only as a counter to the overly optimistic opinions that others have used.

tower912

I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic.   He is a 6'1 shooter from central Wisconsin with no D1 offers but some D3 sniffs.   I am glad that he is willing to walk on at MU.   I do not assume that he will ever make a huge game contribution.

Yep, I know a walk-on is darn lucky to see the floor, probably 2 minutes if their lucky. Like one quote said "let me know if
you fine one with height". The kid is a very good shooter in a weak league. How is Kostas (A to Z) doing in AAU?

What does Kostas have to do with a thread about the new walk on? Kostas is never going to walk on at Marquette...or anywhere

And he wasn't really a walk-on.  Got a scholarship all three years.  And part of the deal to even come back the final year.

Yes, yes!  Wojo should put an advertisement in the Trib, in case there are a couple of bored tall kids on campus.

Walk-on Wanted
Dedicate same amount of time and energy as the rest of the team, but pay your own way and never play.
6'6"+ with athleticism and conditioning a must.  Cannot be a member of other athletic teams.

A smart 6'1" kid who has basketball skills and can be a practice body without getting in the way is a good deal for a walk-on.

Yeah...for some reason his power really dropped off after the 2007 season.

Seeing him in 2008 was startling.  He lost so much weight that he looked like a different person entirely.
