Mark Fox, Mike Anderson, Bruce Weber, Jamie Dixon, Steve Wojo, Derek Kellogg & Tim Miles watched 2015 6-9 big man Michael Edwards today

Looks like a 3-star whose stock is rising.

Recruiting: John Glenn's Mike Edwards a rising star

Westland – Mike Edwards has been one of the most improved players in the state, a reason Westland John Glenn has a shot at earning its first district title since 1994 when it plays host to Romulus Friday night.

Edwards, a 6-foot-10 senior, averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds a year ago, then put in a lot of hard work during the offseason to prepare for his senior year.

The hard work has paid off with Edwards being a dominant force inside, averaging 22 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks while shooting over 60 percent from the field.

"He only had one offer, from Akron, heading into his senior year, then received another one from Detroit in September," said John Glenn coach Rod Watts of Edwards. "We put in a lot of time with Mike and he's worked hard and learned to love the game instead of just like it. He found out it's a vehicle to get him to the next level and maybe one day get paid for playing."

Edwards, whose father by the same name played football for Michigan State in the late 1980s, has now received multiple offers, including some from SEC and Big Ten schools.

"Georgia's head coach (Mark Fox) watched him play Thursday (March 5), then sent his assistant to Monday's (Class A district opener) game and that's when they offered," Watts said. "Nebraska's assistant (Jim Molinari) was at Monday's game, too."

Edwards has offers from Georgia, Boston College, Eastern Michigan, Detroit, Cleveland State and Loyola-Marymount, and is being looked at by such schools as Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, Arkansas, Butler, UTEP and SMU.

Edwards said he has put on weight, which has helped him bang away inside, going from 207 to 217 pounds and counting.

"I'm putting on weight and I feel stronger," said Edwards, who had 8 points, 15 rebounds and 7 blocks Wednesday in a 56-53 Class A district semifinal win over Wayne Memorial. "I've feel I've made my biggest improvement in finishing around the basket and defending in the paint. I still need to work on my favorite move, the hook shot."

Edwards will need to be at this best for John Glenn to top a 16-5 Romulus team led by 6-2 standout guard Jaylin Walker, who is averaging 24 points and 6 rebounds and headed for Kent State.

Edwards will be matched up against 6-7, 280-pound Rio Washington and will need to display his shot-blocking ability against Romulus junior point guard D'Angelo Hansbro, who can get to the basket.

Love to see coach Wojo load his team up with big dominant players.

Warrior_2002

I absolutely agree on loading up with true big men. Something we've lacked for years - at least consistently.

VegasWarrior77

Lots of good schools after him now - including Michigan.  If Wojo and his staff sign him it would be unreal!

Does this offer mean we're outta consideration for Diamond? Wojo probably gave Stone an ultimatum to chit or get off the pot, hey?

With Luke, Matt, Henry, and this dude, who needs him.

We'd have 20 fouls to give each game in the middle.

I just watched his highlights from the past few games and WOW am I impressed. This kid can play. I don't know how he fell under the radar so long, he must have taken a while to grow into his body. I think he would be a great compliment alongside the bigs that we already have signed. He is definitely a more aggressive player. He just goes out there and attacks. When he gets the ball he looks to attack the rim, on D he attacks the ball for blocked shots, and on both ends of the court he attacks rebounds. Also, hes a player that doesn't demand touches to get the points. He would be a great compliment to Luke especially. I would compare him a lot with Jameel McKay who we all know has had a great year at ISU. This kid is a great athlete with a great motor.

I just think that if Michigan offers he'll end up there from what I've read. Go get 'em Wojo

TAMU, Knower of Ball

The one position I think we could use a freshman in is the post. Not saying Ellenson will go pro, but you have to prepare for it. Edwards could fill a need.

Looks like the Aggies got a heck of a class coming in. Cleaning up in Texas. Might finish the job against EwwwwKaaaay next year.

The guys he's playing against in the first video look like the basketball version of The Bad News Bears.

WOW......unbelievable to think this kid has been that far under the radar for that long.....
His left hand is non-existent but other than that he looks like a fantastic prospect.
If Wojo can pull THIS off, that would be crazy.

Besides the last video it looks like he has a foot on about everyone.  What I did notice is he has good agility and handles for his size.  He was really good on the fast break and good get to the basket and finish.  He also could guard the perimeter and had some nice blocked shots.  He looks more like a 4 to me, but I'm fairly impressed.

I love that even in the few instances where he drives hard to the left, he still manages to put it up with the right. Excellent length as well, really knows how to use his wingspan to corral the ball on rebounds. Looks like a solid prospect.

I'm impressed with how well he gets up and down the floor.  He's not a lumbering 6'10" stiff.  Reel him in Wojo....

He really does run the floor well. Dribbles a bit too much, but that could be fixed.

So do you guys think he's a 4 at the next level?  Would a guy like this back up Henry?  How is his skill set different than Matt's or are they interchangeable?

Could he be a stretch 5 like Kaminsky?  Not saying he's as good or will be as good, simply asking if he's that type of a 5.

Reminds me of Montrezl Harrell.  High-motor kind of guy.
