Does anyone know what the plan with Sensenbrenner Hall is once the new law school building is built?

Like Johnston and Marquette Hall, Sensenbrenner is a beautiful old building, and I'd hate to see it go. With the exception of the law library (which is a dump), I remember the rest of the building as being in pretty decent shape.

That could end up being a nice space for humanities/languages/social sciences classes--maybe pave the path to eventually get rid of Lalumiere--Eyesore #2 on MU's campus (behind the soon-to-be-demolished 1212).

That explains it. What a dump.

And yes, I do remember the "U Store." They had some really, really bad merchandise for sale there.

I actually bought a lot of newspapers and college basketball magazines there.

Why does that post make me want to go to the bathroom?

Not sure what you're reading into that PRN. Lived in McCormick my freshman year, had a fair number of classes at Johnston, so the natural stop my freshman year to pick up a newspaper or a magazine was that place.

Newspapers + college basketball magazines = bathroom reading materials!

When MU tore down the College of Speech (the Plankington Mansion) I gave up all hope. Consider ourselves lucky Chartres isn't on campus. The Rose Window would have been traded to Allen-Edmunds show company for some wing tips.

Frozen Caveman Coach

I thought you were referring to the use of the word "dump".

Have they done a remodeling of the old classrooms inside Johnston Hall? I remember them being in pretty bad shape back in the 70's.

Doesn't look like it... but Ive only had one class in the building, the strange room on the first floor with no clock and a step in the front of the classroom.

The campus is so nice now....the 1212 Building used to be the highlight.  Grebe's was the place to bounce a check while getting a French Cruller.  The U Store for b-ball apparerel.  I remember going to Dr. Ei there, an Opthamologist, for a scratched cornea via a hoops game in the Old Gym.  Public Safety was on the street level.  You could see the NCAA trophy in the Athletic Department office, if I remember correctly (on my way to see Dr. Ei for my eye).   1212 was right next to Schroeder Beach!

i know this is only a concept, but here ya go.

it looks like it would occupy the open land south of the parking lot behind the existing buildings.

i thought the parking lot was going to be lost during the construction b/c it is suppose to be so big?

This is cool, but I hope they add some traditional architectural elements. MU has done a good job the past 10 years giving the campus a more cohesive look. I'd hate to see them go too modern with this one. (I'm sure there are people who design buildings that know way more about this stuff than I do).

Also, this is going to take up some of the little green space that MU has (which is too bad), but I guess that is a small price to pay for the new building (that is really needed).

By judging the picture, it looks like the glass facade will incorporate that "Marquette" look given by Marquette Hall and the new library. It is just done in glass, not brick. This is more apparent on the left hand side of the building as well.

Unfortunately, Marquette traditionally will not keep with a campus theme, Cudahy, Lalumiere, and the science buildings. However, I think the current administration isn't that way.

The green space that it will occupy is probably the least used on campus. Other than being the site for a surveying transverse, I've never seen a single kid over there. Too close to the free way, and it's a large sloping hill.

Yeah, Torre Hill was never used much, outside of the occasional game of Frisbee, but anytime you give up green space, you can't really get it back. It may not have been used much now, but at least it was available.

I'm guessing (or at least hoping) that MU has a cohesive campus plan for all of the buildings and dormitories. I hate to think that each of the schools is simply out for their own interest instead of what is best for the whole University.

Campus look and feel will be very important for MU in the next 10 years. If MU wants to keep moving forward to becoming a more elite school, the campus facilities (dorms, school buildings, apartments, etc.) will need to continue to be upgraded and continue to create the right "feel" for the school.

TallTitan34

Go figure the 1212 building would get a 3 page thread on a basketball forum! Haha.

Losing the green space shouldn't be a problem as a new green space was created in the location 11th Street used to occupy. (For those of you who haven't been on campus 11th Street has been moved to "wiggle" around to the east side of Carpenter Tower leaving a pedestrian mall between Cobeen and Carpenter along with more green space by the law building.)

drewm88

My friends and I have used Torry Hill numerous times. The big tree in the middle was great for splitting it into 2 separate snow football fields. The new wiggle can't replace it unless it gets about 10 times bigger.

ZiggysFryBoy

if they get rid of Tory Hill, where will Freeway watch traffic???!!!????

Last year the building behind O'Donnel Hall was torn down and a pretty good size grass field has been put in.  It encorporates the look of campus by having a steel fence with brick beams similar to the pilars seen around campus.

Good to hear. I get back to campus a couple times a year, but rarely walk around enough to see all of the different changes.

Like I said, I'm sure (or at least hoping) that MU has some very smart people working on the long term campus planning and how everything fits together.

MU has done a great job in most aspects over the past 10 years. If MU is as successful from 2007-2017 like they were from 1997-2007... they will be in a very good spot.

I know that the new law school building will be on Torre Hill, but my original question went unanswered.  Since they don't have to tear down Sensenbrenner (the current law school building), what will happen to it?  I can't imagine that the law school will still need it, which means that you have an entire building open for...what?

Anyone know?

I'm currently a law student here, and I can tell you that the law school won't be using it.  That's as much information as the administration has put out.  Sensenbrenner will stick around, but it doesn't have a defined purpose as of yet.
