OT: Benefit Concert to Support James Foley Scholarship at Marquette

As you're all probably aware, the American Journalist, Jim Foley, who was held captive by ISIS and then murdered in an international news event was a Marquette grad. Not only that, Jim was a huge fan of Marquette hoops and basketball in general. Most importantly, the silver lining to these recent events is the world has heard what a smart, decent and honorable person Jim was even in the worst of conditions.

To honor Jim his Marquette friends have started a scholarship at Marquette: The James Foley Scholarship in the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a Marquette journalism student who might otherwise not be able to attend Marquette.

The scholarship is off to one of the strongest fundraising starts in the university's history according to people at Marquette. We are working to further awareness and funding for the scholarship with an upcoming Benefit Concert at the Vic Theatre in Chicago on November 7th. The lineup includes bands that are all very familiar to Marquette alumns. The lineup includes Hello Dave, the Predictors, and a performance by a Legendary Milwaukee Rock Band.

Due to the fact that the headliner is donating their performance and are playing another venue on a close date, we can't publicize the band's name directly due to an agreement they have with venues (show business and all...). I'm glad to hear this has been put together!  I wish I could personally attend.

I know who the legendary band is since the band leader told me personally when I saw them in early October.  See my post-show notes in a Superbar Thread.
   
All I can say is the band members are a nice in person as one could imagine for doing this benefit and this is the second time in the last 2 years that I know of them of going out of their way of to squeeze events in their schedule.

I've heard it's definitely the Bodeans and that is awesome.  The stamp that James Foley left on this earth is truly amazing.   The level of support from across the country and well beyond is a fitting tribute to an incredible life.

Alright then, add Violent Femmes, Sigmund Snopek, Pat McCurdy. There was some solid music coming out of Milwaukee around the same time as the BoDeans breaking out (which matched my MU years).

What was the band that was a bit like INXS with a like singer that was totally egotistic like Bono and a sound like Red Hot Chili Peppers? That was 89-90ish. Wow, what a show they put on.

The BoDeans were an incredible show at the old Alumni Memorial Union, in probably '87. Thanks to people like Frank Steck, MU hosted at the time great bands like Soul Asylum, the Reivers, 10,000 Maniacs, NRBQ and on and on.

And, yes, Paul Cebar was a musical staple then; good that he's still around these days.

Bon Ton Society passes name recognition, but I can't recall anything beyond the name.

But, Tower, the BoDeans couldn't have been our freshman year (84-85), could it have? Though I bet you're right that '87 is too late. Maybe fall '85 or spring '86. Here's one 'marker' for me: I feel sure it was after our last (THE last) Block Party, and wasn't that Sept/Oct '85 (meaning you and I had 3 Block Party experiences)?

(I saw U2 in '87 on the Joshua Tree tour but I don't recall the BoDeans opening/playing.)

I do feel like NRBQ was in the school year 84-85 because I know they played at Varsity Theater and my mind tells me that it felt funny being in there for a concert rather than a Dr. Barrett Biology lecture, which was why I was normally in that locale. Then again, that's definitely where 10,000 Maniacs played, though I can't recall what year that was.

Mug,  it may have been 85.   They released L&H&S&D in 86.   I remember hearing that they had just signed to a label.

10,000 Maniacs played there during the spring of 88 with Tracy Chapman opening.

I remember 10,000 Maniacs playing sometime in 1987-1991 timeframe.  I recall a getting a parody name of "10,000 Koreshes" stuck in my head.

Kurt told me when I chatted with him the beginning of the month that they agreed to do it because Jim Foley's family told him Jim was a big fan of the Bodeans.
