Best system in the states, but a nightmare to get into, especially now.  I have one going to college in two years and the competition to get into a UC is incredible.  Back in my day, it came down to UC San Diego, UC Irvine and MU for me.   There is no way in hell I could get into those two UC schools today with the grades I had then (which were very good).

Think of it this way, there are only 7 undergrad UC schools, and 6 are in the top 50.  UC Riverside is the 7th.   There is also UC SF, but that is a medical school only.

So why doesn't he just go to Marquette? If everything goes according to plan he'll be able to witness a national championship run....or two

Aren't there a whole bunch of Cal-State schools that are public but a "lower" tier than the UC system?

Good question, I don't know.

I've always been baffled at the # in Wisconsin, though, compared to other states. And that's just the 4-year schools. Pretty sure there are 13 2-year UW-schools as well.

Most states university systems are laid out this way with two tiers.

Interesting. I think of Baylor and Minnesota as being way ahead of VT and Iowa. And Marquette ahead of all of them. But I'm biased.

Yes : Cal State Fullerton, Bakersfield, Dominguez Hills, etc., etc.  There are also Cal- Polys particularly        San Luis Obispo  which is very difficult to get in as well

Pretty embarassing that we would be ranked ahead of any state school with a research presence.

I think we're all pretty aware that these rankings weight the research and public funding available to all of these schools very high. Not bashing MU, as we're not really out to be that school at this point.

Also - nice how MU and UW have 57% and 51% acceptance rates, respectively... speaking to any Badger fan, you'd expect them to be in the Michigan range. NOPE

Financial instability comes to mind whenever the cal system is referenced. A behemoth should have a handful of good schools, makes sense.

The california state schools are a lower tier but there are lots of majors that aren't offered at both UC's and state schools.  I'm from LA, I went to MU for physical therapy which is not offered at UC's but is at some of the state schools.  the more you know.

Also it is much easier to get into the UC schools when you are from CA, Santa Barbara (I got in), SD, cal and UCLA are tough, the others not so much.

Where were we last year? Did we move in the right direction? I remember being in the 80s when I was at MU 5-8 years ago.

It is interesting that Madison continues to tank. I read where the administration at Northeastern made a push to get their ratings up and they have gone from off the board almost to near parity with Madison. Would love to see our administration figure out how to move us up in the ratings .  I think a lot of it is a PR campaign to peer institutions and guidance counselors at high schools.

California has 10 schools in the main UC system and another 23 in the Cal-state system.
