I've seen a couple of references to Nick being a "Polish" kid, but it my little burg in MA is any guide, it's probably Slovak. That might not seem like a big difference, but it's akin to an Easterner confusing Wisconsin residents with the FIB's.

My mistake, and it does make a difference.  In the ancestry website says possible origins as Lithuanian, Russian, Slovenian, Polish, but who knows.  Shouldn't have assumed.

The reality is that between the Mongols and the Cossacks everyone in Eastern Europe has common DNA

If one travels from Hungary through the steppes and Crimea, the Stans and into China you can see evidence that the Mongols came and conquered. Fascinating.

Keefe,
You'd appreciate this. My wife took me to me a Tatar village, where everyone is descended from the Mongols, who were invited by the Polish king a very long time ago to fight either Prussians or Russians.  (I don't remember?)  The villages are more tourist attractions now as the villages are of a very small population and it's very odd to see a town full of Asiatic looking people that are Muslim in the middle of Poland.  Besides the multi-100 year old mosque, you visit the ancient cemetery where the names on tombstones read in an Arabic-Polish twist like "Ali Mucharski" or "Nasar Abdulski".
