Why don't people use their real names on message boards?

I recently changed my name from indymufan to my real name & face, and it made me curious about this question.

No big deal, but was just curious as to the reason -- protecting identities? Is it easier to criticize a screen name? Just what's always been done? More fun to be a screen name?

Hopefully, you never have to change back to a username because you've discovered first hand why.

I've put my real name in posts.    I don't have a problem with people knowing it.    For me, posting on 3 different MU boards, it is just easier to stay with the same name on all 3.

There's something a little empowering about anonymity.  Me -- I'm terribly introverted in real life.  Pretty sure I've gone the last fifteen years without direct eye contact.

To be honest, I do like not knowing who people are because to a certain extent it frees me from biases I might have had that aren't relevant to a basketball conversation.

This is it more than anything.  I know some of my buddies are on this board, and I have a lot of presuppositions about the way they think, argue, etc.  Part of the fun of this board is knowing nothing more about the people here than the nuggets they provide in their posts.

That's urban legend crapola.  The Ima part is true, not the "Ura" part.  I'm related to the Hogg's on my mother's side.  Ima Hogg was the daughter of a Texas governor, and had no sisters.  Or any brother with that name.
