Especially when the last "term" is dictating who your boss will be. It was over when Cords said he would be the interim AD for the next year. In the end, I'm glad MU said no. We moved up the prez hire announcement, we gave him everything he wanted including insane $$, he agreed in principal but we wouldn't let him hand-pick the AD. Oops I said it.

This is my understanding too.

Again, great credit goes to Cords for walking away from Smart.

Goose, you were right all along about Smart.  You were also right about Buzz too.  I know I gigged you more than once about Buzz. My apologies.

Supposedly, she presented a list of acceptable candidates.  I do not know who was on the list.

You should know you're very lost if you agree to select a boss for a candidate based on a list of acceptable names that the candidate's wife provided.  Thankfully, at a time when many were for "whatever it takes" to get a deal done, Cords was not so foolish.  MU's balls remain safely out of the grasp of Mrs. Smart.

MUDPT

This story is crazy.  Does Mrs. Smart have any background in collegiate athletics to know who good AD candidates are?

You didn't, MU82 beat you to it this time.

Has has been discussed, great minds (two minds in particular) think alike.

/I wonder if he noticed the teal in the original.

I always think I'm smarter than the next guy being able to recognize when a post is sarcasm. But I'm just an idiot like everyone else ;D

They just wanted a stable situation where they have a good indication of who their boss would be.  Can't necessarily blame them if they are in a good situation now.

MU82

Shaka Who? Oh, the guy who has made earlier and earlier NCAA tourney exits each of the last several years?

Well, we already have our coach.

I thought that he wanted to name the exact AD and MU said "no," but they were open to "looking at a list." They supplied the list and then not long after Cords said he was interim and it was over. Even though many weeks have passed, I haven't heard from anyone with direct knowledge about the list. I was blown away that the whole AD thing didn't come out on this board until today because many on here were fully aware of it. Ganzer was a little premature on his #done deal, but it was pretty much done other than a few "incidentals." Who would have thought forcing the school to move up the prez announcement and hand picking the AD would be "incidentals"? But as I said back then, Shaka is an absolute control freak and super conservative dude -- every detail needs to be nailed down. No way he would have ever taken this job without an AD in place -- just not in his DNA. So without an AD in place, his solution was to hand-pick one he would be comfortable with -- which is back to the control issue. He doesn't get into situations where he doesn't have ultimate control. Now, my guess is that not long after he supplied the list, MU realized that they were looking desperate and handing over too much control, especially from a timetable perspective. While Strong & Co. loved Shaka, the prez and his advisors came to their senses and said enough is enough and moved in another direction.

There is some truth to the "SS selecting his own boss" story.

Only a couple grains of it though.

For one, I can almost guarantee that Cords will not be the AD by the time the basketball season starts. That combined with the fact that he was already "going to be the AD next year" before the coaching search means that it wasn't over because Cords was going to be the AD for a year.

I know you are being sarcastic keefe but if that had been the case (and Larry agreed) I believe it would have gotten done.

I had not heard any of this from my sources so its good to know and I believe Cords did the right thing.  I can imagine SS being satisfied with the Presidential selection and then wanting to know who his boss would be.  If he insisted on a particular individual or three, then that's giving him too much power and I applaud MU for stepping away.

Anyway, Wojo's the man.  We've got a great coach heading up our program.

My point was that when they had the "no news" press conference to announce "Cords was going to be interim for the next year" -- that is when we knew the Shaka saga was over. That meant we were officially not going to proceed with the "you pick your own AD route."  Although I'm not overly impressed with our PR team, they would never have a press conference to announce Cords as interim for the next year, then have another conference within the week to backtrack and announce Shaka's selection. I would agree that Cords will not be the AD by the season.

Good call.  If I remember correctly there was a tweet saying, the Shaka Smart backing out of Marquette was what was wrong with college athletics.

This is such old news.

We're wasting all this time on Shaka when we could be engaging in a fresh Derrick-or-Dawson debate!
