If anything, unlike our previous coaches, he can relate to high level D1 talent based on experience.

Not sure what the current figure is, but a few years back there were three or four head coaches in all of D1 who didn't play college basketball at any level.  Our previous coaches were two of them.  Not that it's a prerequisite or wrong in any way, but it is nice to have a former player.
