He has no job.  MU has had no coach for over a week now.  If it was going to get done, wouldn't it be done by now?

I think either MU or Howland or both have moved on.  Their must be a major sticking point that can't be resolved somewhere or else this should have happened by now otherwise.

ecompt

probably right. Gonna be a very tough sell to alumni if Weber gets the job. Hell, it's gonna be tough to sell Martin.

They were able to sell a far worse candidate on paper last time

True. Buzz was an unknown. Weber is a known, and I guarantee would still be a very tough sell. Martin would be easier, but can he recruit?

NavinRJohnson

I don't necessarily think so...It sure looks to me like they either want to hire a black guy, or make sure that everyone at least knows they considered/tried to hire a black guy. Entirely possible, Howland wold kow tis and be content to wait it out as well. MU can say, well we whiffed on Smart and Martin, so we're gonna go with the old white guy.

Someone leaked Candidiate Cuonzo to Goodman who just posted something on it minutes ago.

Weber can coach period.  He's won everywhere he's been.  Illinois has done nothing since his departure, two losing Big Ten seasons.  Consensus on K-State boards is he has their program on the rise and their well rid of Frank Martin.

Hire an ace recruiter or two and Weber will do very well at MU.

Navin, it is possible MU told Howland the offer is still on the table whenever he wants it?

That's the way I see it.

It may be coincidence that almost all the primary "rumored" candidates are minority, but I'm a skeptic by nature. I have no doubt MU is sincere in looking, but think about it, either they hire one they like, or everyone knows they tried. I have no doubt that is in play in some way here.

If that's really the case, why hasn't Danny Manning's name came up at all?

Big time name recognition and two winning seasons at Tulsa.  One has to figure he commands a certain amount of respect among recruits as he was a superstar in college and had a fine NBA career.

Huge question mark as a coach, with just two years experience. I also assume he has a crap load of money. May not want the pressure. Who knows? You like Manning, we get it, but Just because they are looking at black candidates, doesn't mean every black coach has to be candidate.

I do like Manning, but the point I was getting at was that I think it's a little bit of a stretch to conclude MU is really wanting a black head coach as there's several other coaching candidates that would fit the bill that have not been mentioned.

Well, there's really only been three mentioned by any sort of media outlets (ie, not just people wishing or suggesting)...Smart, Martin, and Howland. There are a lot of candidates. You're just pointing to one that hasn't emerged (and may not).

Totally agree - Marquette "Be the Difference" or...just trying to be different:

1. Non Jesuit prez
Next.  Black coach
and...
C. Woman A.D.???

(Not that I have any issues with any of the three; just saying)

No I'm not.  Would it help if I listed other potential coaching candidates that happen to be black other than Danny Manning as there are several.

I've been trying to say that I disagree with your assertion that MU is wanting to hire a black head coach.

Then I would suggest you probably aren't paying attention...to this search or most others. Don't think they are necessarily locked into hiring a minority, but need to make damn sure the world sees that that they tried ( and they should legitimately try - not saying there is anything wrong with it).

Shaka Smart, regardless of race, is one of the top coaching candidates in the country.  Marquette and every other program with clout would be insane not to inquire about him.

Are you suggesting Marquette is self imposing the 'rooney rule' on their search for their next head coach?

If Marquette is basing this hire on anything other than who can recruit the best kids and win the most basketball games than the university isn't serious about winning and fans should be outraged over that thought.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Totally agree an Shaka. Had they hired him without looking at others they wouldn't have had to answer for anything (obviously, he is minority, but that only makes it that much easier). If they hire Howland in the same way, I'm not so sure. Really not sure why you find this difficult to believe.

Because it's the wrong way to go about hiring.  The NCAA doesn't require it and rightfully so.  It places the random genetic trait of skin pigmentation ahead of winning as a requirement for the job. etc, etc, etc.

Again I'll repeat: If Marquette really is self imposing the 'Rooney Rule' on their coaching search fans of the program and school should be up in arms.

EDIT: Now Navin, you may know something nobody else does here (or has been mentioned in any credible news outlet), but after the week of sources being dropped on this site by posters who without exception turned out to be wrong forgive me for being skeptical.  If it is true I'll stick to my comments above about the rediculousness of that reasoning.

Yes, I'm sure Marquette Warrior Golden Eagle fans everywhere share your surprise. Never have we seen MU behave in such a manner.

I don't disagree that it shouldn't be a factor, you hire the best candidate, but I also prefer to live here in the real world, and understand that it is a reality associated with these kinds of things.

mattyv1908

Real world?

I don't recall Marquette University consistently hiring coaches sharing lineage to the Adolph Rupp coaching tree.

And besides, the premier coaching candidate who happens to be black turned down the MU position.  This in and of itself should be enough to quell anybody who would question Marquette's coaching search as anything other than seeking the most qualified candidate.
