Does anybody have the story on what exactly transpired when Crean left? By that I mean, who did we initially target, who turned us down, who turned us off and what other assistants did we talk to before deciding on Buzz. I still feel like we got lucky with him as far as his success goes. But the perception he left behind (a school with a leadership void, blasting our conference and TV deal) could arguably be used to say maybe we shouldn't have stuck our neck out for such an odd guy in the first place.

ZiggysFryBoy

Crean was fired March 31st, 2008.

The topic you chose alone, indicates that you have chosen the wrong place to ask the question.

That's a bit harsh. Tom Crean was dismissed for cause on 31 Mar 08.

We've now fired our last 3 coaches.

BINGO

Which is what I have argued here for so many years.  TC left, middle of the night, players found out on ESPN, blah blah blah.  We all get it.  Having said that, he didn't leave MU in a bad spot, actually left Buzz Williams here, didn't blast the conference, the school, etc on the way out.  Didn't get the AD fired which is now being used against us to hire a replacement.

No one could predict the Buzzard would do this, but I again find it amazing the anger, venom, etc for Crean's departure....TO A fucking BlueBlood mind you, while we have the Buzzard leaving for LESS MONEY to Virginia Fucking Tech and badmouthing MU all the while.

I'm sorry, but who did more damage to MU on the way out?   At some point I expect a light bulb to go on for people especially with the latest actions, but the density is awfully thick for way too many.

Warrior_2002

Speaking of sources, is anyone else tired of Michael Hunt just rolling out everyone else's news?  Go do some research outside of Google for heaven's sake. Good lord.  Oh we are looking at Howland, Hopkins and Wardle?  Way to tell us something Michael.  Go do some freaking research and figure out who else might be a good high level candidate.  I get he doesn't want to look like a fool but go looking around somewhere else other than espn and cbs sports getting info from all their stories.  I expect more out of our local paper.  Come on already!

You're probably right.

Have to wonder though... If Crean could redo his exit, and left in a classy manner... would he?  And what would have the MU community's reaction have been?

Frenns Liquor Depot

Good news -- people now don't like Buzz either.

I'd still like to know how we went about looking for a new guy last time, only to settle on our assistant. I feel like it's gonna be déjà vu, only instead of Buzz we will end up with Wardle.

Litehouse

The story was that we first contacted Tony Bennett, Sean Miller, and Anthony Grant, and they all said no.  Then we hired Buzz.

That changes nothing about Crean. He was a dick and so was Buzz.

It's awesome that after what's transpired over the past five days you still believe people here have good sources.

I'd say MU did Buzz the huge favor. Particularly in how the university graciously allowed him to save his face while gettin' chit canned. Unfortunately, Buzz' true character was revealed upon his exit. His massive ego just wouldn't let him exit stage right, would it? I can tell all y'all, for a fact, that this was gonna be his last season here, one way or another as early as mid-February.
A distrubin' trend has developed where a decision has been made, with all good intentions, to essentially prostitute ourselves to the men's basketball coach or his replacement. I get it, really do. But, Crean, Williams, and now Smart have all been catered to and every wish has been granted. It's a bad policy to set and has and will come back to bite off our nut sacks.

I have heard that, but is it true? And did we talk to other top assistants? Was Crean instrumental in BW getting the job? I have not heard any of this definitively. Seems to me that last time we made it appear like we were doing an exhaustive search, but did we? Seems kind of similar to doing an exhaustive search for a university president and, voila, he's right down the street!!

I am not criticizing our new president. He could be a dream come true. I'm just saying these searches can't be all that thorough.

Would have been great if Cords at the presser yesterday when asked about Buzz said, "Oh, that clown?  We were just going to say that he took the VT job, but since he decided to throw grenades, we fired his ass quietly".

I can tell you the MU brass is extremely pissed off at the Buzzard's comments about the Big East and FS1.  Extremely.  Looks like he got the message and the aw shucks mode kicked back in and he's saying nice things about MU, Milwaukee, etc. again.

Pissed off and infuriated are the words I have heard from the MKE crew.  Buzzard found a gold Willie Wonka ticket in 2007 after bailing on UNO and TC picking him up to then parlay that into the head coaching job at MU....his comments on the way out will reap an epic Karmic return if there is basketball justice in this world.

Hey now.

I have a good friend who is a professor at MU.

I also have niece that once dated Jimmy Butler.

So you can use me as a source if you want to! ;)

That's interesting. I'm not sure this has been discussed on here, but what kind of guy is Strong? Is he a silent, behind the scenes type or more of a pushy type? I guess what I'm getting at is when "Marquette leadership" is discussed by former coaches and candidates, are we talking about Wisconsin avenue or Strong? Could it be that Buzz "left" not so much because of the lack of AD/President/down year but because he'd had enough of Strong/Strong wanted him gone?

Indiana is still a blue blood? Is it because they dont play in the CBI? When does the shine wear off on that status? Since 1987, that program has been to the FF twice (and a NC game once (and lost)). Goodbye Indiana, hello....UConn (three national titles since 87)?

TAMU, Knower of Ball

The story I have heard is that we offered Sean Miller, he said no. We then talked to Tony Bennett but we did NOT offer him. He made it clear that he would bolt for Wisconsin should Bo be fired. We then offered Buzz.

Not sure about Anthony Grant.
