Yes. South Side boy. St. Ignatius.  Awesome guy. He made sure to keep me hip to 16" softball being played in Milwaukee

16" softball player? Im sold.

Based on statements in another thread, it sounds like perhaps a bit of "mutual approval" needs to occur.  The new president might need to approve Smart, and Smart might need to "approve" the new president (i.e., make sure he's comfortable with who his boss would be).
Kearney will give him advice on contractual negotiations and Smart we'll walk away at the bargaining table.

As to the public speaking: he's getting better and better. A little stop and go, but he did a great job at the MU Law meetup in Chicago. Very interesting, loves sports (particularly his White Sox), and his motor is always running in ways to make the law school THE place. He would take this to the level of University.

If you are worried about fundraising, please look at the 100m law school. He's... decent at raising money.

This.  Also an Ignatius grad? Good man!

And a White Sox fan? Too good to be true.

I hope he has a dynamic personality. I think it is essential for that role and something everyone from Raynor on lacked.

And White Sox fan.

If he's also a Bears fan too we can contact the Pope to saint him now.

Brilliant brilliant guy. not the best public speaker though. will be interesting to see if he can raise money.

Actually one-on-one skills are much more important for fundraising.  No one donates eight-figure sums based on a stirring speech they heard.
Have some patience, FFS.

So if this happens today and broeker is named AD tomorrow morning, are we good?

Kearney would be a HUGE land for MU

Catholic, In tight with the diocese, oversaw the $100m law school building -dude knows how to shake hands and pick up the phone... and was also law clerk for Scalia on SCOTUS.

believe i pitched this months ago.

Wow, that's impressive regardless on my views of Scalia. To give some Scoopers an idea of the (financial) value of a clerkship with an SC judge, top law firms dole out signing bonuses an excess of $250,000 for those clerks. Crazy prestige.

I'm a bit biased, but I think he's awesome. Good dry wit to him. Great at the one-on-one. Well spoken. Almost always the smartest guy in the room but doesn't make you feel like he's talking down.  This is a guy you want shaking hands and talking to donors.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

+ a lot.  Agree with everything you said.

Goodman and Katz are saying nothing is done yet and they think Kearney is going to stay with Law.

In our Federal Courts class, he made sure to walk all the way to my seat when passing out a handout to tell me that if I ever wore my Ernie Banks jersey in his classroom again, he would fail me.  ;D

That's awesome - because he has actually told me that story.

Have you seen the new law school building?

Niv Berkowitz

If there's any profession Catholic's know about, especially of late, it's lawyers, particularly of the 'defense' variety.  Amiright?

Beautiful.  I went to MU undergrad and went elsewhere for law school.  If they had that building at the time I would have given it serious consideration.

This is exactly right. I'm also a little biased because I was his research assistant one summer in law school and took one of his two classes. He's incredibly smart, but doesn't come off as thinking he's better than you. He's great in a small group (or classroom) setting.

I'll give you that this public speaking has some idiosyncrasies, but I actually find I'm more engaged with the conversation or speech because of it. He's exactly the same way at oral argument at the appellate level and he's obviously persuasive there.

I know I've seen him at basketball games and I assume he's a season ticket holder. As others have said he can definitely fundraise. I don't think it's quite as big a part of being dean, but with the new facilities that just opened he was doing more than his fair share.

If this is true I couldn't be happier for Marquette, both for academics and athletics.

He would have done it too. ;)

IIRC when he was at Jenner & Block in Chicago he represented the Cubs (antitrust lawsuit filed about expansion?). Said it was one of the hardest things he ever had to do.

Powerful hire if this is the case.  Top notch credentials, and obviously understands how MU works, which was the realized risk with the last round of external hires.  Heard the hire was in the envelope, to be presented to the Board next month.  Looks like they didn't use a security envelope.  ;)  Could also make our coaching search a little easier if candidates can be told that the line of the national journalists of "No President, No AD" isn't really true.
