Andy Katz to discuss on Katz Korner today --

Andy Katz ‏@ESPNAndyKatz  4m
On Katz Korner at 1 p.m. Pearl on his NCAA restrictions, Buzz on taking a pay cut, Buzz's Bunch continuing, Archie on new deal. @ESPNU.

Wade for President

Buzz's goodwill, save-face PR campaign continues.  He's probably reaching out to any media member possible.

Or just doing the same thing at VT, or finding a way to have it continue here. Whatever. Of all the things to criticize, the possible demise of Buzz's Bunch in Milwaukee is not one of them.

Maybe not, but i would like to see it continued.  I'm sure a lot of those kids would like to see it continued as well

MUEng92

So he is paying to move all of the Buzz's Bunch families to Virginia?

He can no longer afford to do such a thing

Please, let's stay away from the Buzz's Bunch smears. A lot of families go through a lot of heartache and that program makes a world of difference.

Agreed. Definitely wasn't trying to be negative by starting this thread -- just offering hope that it will continue here (under new name) and will be started elsewhere as well.

I'm far from criticizing the potential demise of Buzz's Bunch - I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on this board that would do so.

However, there's a small part of me (and I think many would agree...possibly not publicly) that wonders if Brent is throwing in Buzz's Bunch name to stay relevant, divert attention from the fact that he settled on VaTech.

I'm 110% respectful of the program and families involved (I've cried each of the four times I've watched the recently aired clip), simply find it interesting that during the middle of the tourney and such a head-scratching coaching move, that's a bullet point of discussion.

The IP law nerd in me kinda wishes MU had registered "Buzz's Bunch" as a mark and domain name so he wouldn't be able to use it elsewhere. Of course I could also see arguments that the goodwill attached to the name flows to MU rather than Brent and that the common law mark is owned by MU rather than Brent.

The IP lawyer in me wonders why it matters. If MU continues a program like this it would obviously want a different name, and if Williams does something similar in Virginia and wants to use the same name, nobody around here is going to notice. The goodwill associated with the name is so localized that having a "Buzz's Bunch" in Virginia isn't going to be associated with MU at all.

The lesson I would take from this is that if a coach wants to run a program like this using his visibility as head coach of the university, the name should relate to the university, not the coach. Like last year when the name of the summer barbecue was changed from Buzz's BBQ to something more generic that was hosted by Buzz Williams.

If you had a special needs child you would understand the impact of the program.  Marquette needs to own this and continue it for a number of reason -- humanitarian Jesuit tradition and if you're cynical PR.

so maybe don't block Buzz from also doing it. I don't think there's much in the bible about needing to hold a monopoly on charity.
"Half a billion we used to do about every two months...or as my old boss would say, 'you're on the hook for $8 million a day come hell or high water-.    Never missed in 6 years." - Chico apropos of nothing

This.  It helps make a community of people, both kids and parents, who are often isolated.

How about "Shaka's Special Kids?"

Or "Howland's Heros?"
I mean, OK, maybe he's secretly a serial killer who's pulled the wool over our eyes with his good deeds and smooth jumper - Pakuni (on Markus Howard)

mujivitz06

Let's just pray it continues at Marquette and Buzz starts it up in Blacksburg as well. Don't need any nonsense about PR...it's an amazing thing and it is good for everyone that story is told. Could care less if Buzz benefits from the PR because the important thing is the impact the program makes on the kids.

You want to make it the PR end of it a bullet point of discuss? Fine. Here's my opinion.

You know I know Buzz left and we can say all we want about it, but do you think the families of the sick children that he reached out to personally and privately think that it was just a PR stunt? Most of us never knew about these stories until Gary Parrish or others dug into it and found out. A lot of that was done in quiet by Buzz. Of all the things you can say about him I don't think you can say it was done for any PR reason. That's my analysis.

MattyWarrior

Now hes a media darling and trying to win over everyone, its about the children, not Buzz. It definitely should be
continued at MU. Makes me wonder about all the goodwill that came out about it in the press about the time we where
out of the tournament.

My line of thinking was purely out of spite and I grant a moron in a hurry (someone located near VT, for example) may not be confused. Although, at the same time, even though the org carried Brant's name, it was inextricably tied to MU in all of the newscasts and articles. Probably not a winning case but also one that VT may not want to face.
