"We call him 'Avante' because he does not have any 'D'...."

Keep justinfying it all you want Buzz.

HE IS YOUR BEST GODDAMN PLAYER. Offense. Defense. HE IS YOU BEST PLAYER.

I know, I am not a college basketball coach(since this is a turning point for you wadesworld)  and you Buzz have done fantastic in your 6 years here. But this year is getting obnoxious.

STOP, finding reasons to pile on Davante. STOP going to creepy lengths to defend Derrick(hes playing well right now, just the defense mode from B is weird). Most importantly STOP starting Chris and Juan together.

They may be great people. They may come to practice and play hard. But, this is not 6th grade in house basketball. Play your best guys.

I should be just enjoying this win but this comment really pissed me off.

Why can't our good players get complements?

Davante played his most complete game of the year.   And Buzz was smart enough to ride him as the Georgetown bigs paraded to the bench.

He says what needs to be said to keep the motors running on each of his players. If he thinks the player can handle a chip on his shoulder he gives him one. If he thinks the player needs TLC to keep motivated throughout the year while he's constantly trashed by fans, he'll give him that TLC.

This isn't a new concept from buzz. Not sure why so many posters have singled in on these comments this year.

I disagree. He defends someone like Derrick(again not bashing him as he as been fine lately)

But says "vander was average, Junior was ok, trent was bad"

Seriously? we lost 3 not good players and are fighting for our lives to make the tourney?

I completely disagree.  We lost three good (not great) two-way players.  No one this year has stepped up replace them.  I believe the lack of 2-way players, which forces constantly changing lineups, combined with little upperclass leadership, are the basic problems of this year's team.

Plus, you, I and most of this Board have no issue criticizing players behind the anonymity of Scoop.  If you don't object to that, why do you object to Buzz, who is with these players every day, saying what he did publicly?

How so?

Cmon man.

Re read my post.

You say you disagree, and then call those guys "good".

Can you not tell in my post that I think it is idiotic that Buzz called the 3 of them bad?

So what are you disagreeing with?

Please look at my post.  I quoted and disagreed with your comment that we lost three players that were not good.  You think Vander, Junior and Trent were not good players, or did I misread?  As my post said, I thought they were good, not great.

+1000. Buzz made the comments in the post game show when asked about Davante's performance. And guess what, Buzz talked more about Chris in that segment. Sort of like his comments about Derek and his gamechanger, best defender he has ever coached. Buzz has his pets and he is not going to change. More Buzzspeak.

I understand.  We all have reading issues on this board.  I was not commenting on that part of your post.  I specifically quoted the last line of your post where you say Vander, Junior and Trent were not good.  Did I misread that last line?  If not, I still say I disagree with that statement, but you are entitled to your oprinion.   We disagree.  I did not compare your opinion to that of a third grader (as you did with Juan's play on another thread).

I just reread your last line, and can see a way you were referring to Buzz, not giving your opinion they were not good.  If that is your intent, sorry for the confusion.  I just did not read it that way.

He does what he can to motivate his playes. Besides that does anyone here think Gardner is an overall good defensive player? He is decent in the low block, but has limitations as his player takes the ball outside.

How does Buzz "trashing" Vander Junior and Trent disprove my point?  Again, this all has to do with the way these players function.  Without being in the locker room I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was the way he talked to Vander Junior and Trent while they were on the team.  He rides the guys that he knows can take the beating.  He's always ridden Davante to try to get the best out of him, and he's continuing that trend this year.

There must be something about Derrick's personality that makes Buzz think Derrick doesn't need any more of a beating than he's already getting.

What I understood from the interview was that Mac and Homer said they called him Savante and Buzz said that he called him Avante to get him upset because his lack of D and they all laughed. I think it is more of a motivational thing in practice. Do not think Buzz said it to put Davante down. Buzz is a defense first coach while other coaches are offensive oriented. To Buzz D is most important part of game and whether we think is right or wrong that is who he is as a coach. Finally if Davante was really bothered by that I do not think he would have stayed the 4 yrs. Have you heard any of Butler's interviews now that he is with the Bulls? He says Buzz was so hard on him he wanted to transfer, but was convinced not to transfer. Just who Buzz is and he is not going to change.

hairy worthen

By most accounts Buzz's players respect him, and like playing for him. Buzz has his players back and their best interest in mind, that's obvious.

These are young adults, if you sugar coat everything for them all the time, they will see through the bullsheet.  Buzz tells it like it is both ways. If you don't criticize when it is warranted, then the positive comments mean nothing. Al did the same thing all the time.

Is it better to criticize in private and compliment in public? Perhaps, but that is Buzz's style for better or worse. His players seem to respect him and he has the pulse of his team and knows whose buttons to push and who to back off.

It's a bit disingenuous to come out and criticizes Buzz for the way he handles his players when you are not in the locker room or on the team. The mock outrage on this message board has gotten to the point of being comical.

Does he beat on Jamil? Did he ever beat on DJO? Butler? Before that one comment about Blue/Jr/Trent being average, a comment you're totally taking out of context, did he beat on Trent and Jr last year? There's plenty of good players he didn't beat on because they didn't need that motivation.

This has nothing to do with them being good/bad.  It has to do with what makes these players tick.

That is MY POINT.

He waited until they are gone. Then said that they were not that good. Yet in reality, without them...we are fighting to even stay on the bubble.

How in the world are you not seeing this? Are you satisfied with being a desperation tourney team?

It's obnoxious the way he talks up someone like Derrick but bases Davante. He did it last game too saying Davante was "not smart" giving the ball to a 47% free throw shooter.

IT WAS BUZZ WHO PUT THE 47% FREE THROW SHOOTER IN THE GAME. How is it Davante's fault he found the open man that BUZZ put on the court?

avid1010

yeah...you often hear MU players discuss how they feel that buzz doesn't believe in them.  they leave MU, cut off all contact, and refuse to come back.

have you ever seen buzz chew a player out on the court during a game?

Avenue Commons

I love Davante, but he can't play 40 minutes of basketball. He needs to sit for stretches due to conditioning issues. I think that May be part of why Buzz puts him in games later so he is there at the end when needed most.

No, you're taking his comment out of context.  He was trying to get his team to buy into the fact that they can do this without Junior Vander and Trent.   Had Buzz said "Don't worry about what this program lost, worry about what the team this year is doing." it would have meant the same thing.
