Duane's a combo, is he not?
Duane is a combo and Derrick Wilson was a combo. Combo's generally do not make great point guards.

Tower, I agree that one oversigning is not a problem, but two.  That to me is a stretch unless you know for sure one has told you they are leaving, or maybe another is a frosh with questionable grades is another.

Would we have heard if someone told Buzz that they are leaving?  Would we have heard if there is a frosh with questionable grades or an incoming frosh who may be headed to prep school?  No, no, and no.  So, why worry?

At schools like Louisville oversigning by two and even three is not uncommon.  I guess the question then is do we want to be like Louisville?  Wait, who's the national champion?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I watched the last 6 or 7 minutes of the UMass-URI game today. UMass has a guard (generously) listed at 5-9, Chaz Williams, who is freakin' incredible.

UMass has offered his sub-6 foot replacement.

Luwane Pipkins simply was taking the bait.

The Bogan junior isn't shy, and he wasn't thinking about the target his words were drawing on his back.

Asked after a December victory over defending Class 3A champion Morgan Park whether he thought he was the best guard in the city, Pipkins explained why he believed he was.

He spent the next seven weeks proving it.

Five feet 10 inches with a chip on his shoulder, Pipkins is the leader of a Bogan team that has clawed its way out of Simeon's and Morgan Park's shadow.

His 27 points, five steals and four assists per game, along with his 90 percent free-throw and 46 percent 3-point shooting, vaulted the Bengals past Simeon, the four-time defending Class 4A champion, and Morgan Park for the Public League Red-South title.

For his accomplishments, Pipkins is the Tribune/WGN-Ch. 9 Preps Plus Athlete of the Month for January.

"I just answered the question," Pipkins said. "I'm not going to say another guard is better than me. I feel great about saying it. If I said it, I meant it. Most people say I was cocky about saying it. (Curie's) Cliff Alexander told me I was cocky. He asked a question, I answered it.

"I'm glad it's out there so people can come at me. I want you coming at me. I'm going to win, though, because there is no other guard like me.

"Other guards aren't as strong and quick as me. Defense-wise, I can stick any guard in the city."

QB or not QB?

Pipkins is from Englewood, right in the middle, he said, of rival gangs. He has been left alone since grammar school out of respect for his basketball ability, he said, and perhaps the size of his older brothers. College, he hopes, will be his ticket out of the city. He dreams of getting his father out of the neighborhood. His brothers were good football players in the Public League, and the speed and toughness so apparent on the court can translate well to the gridiron. Even after establishing himself as a legitimate Division I prospect last winter and again on the AAU circuit, Pipkins decided to play quarterback for Bogan last fall. His reasoning belied his typically bold words. "I played because I wanted to get stronger, and I wanted to have options for college in case basketball didn't work out," Pipkins said. Bogan basketball coach Arthur Goodwin compared him to Michael Vick. Goodwin also predicted he would last only two or three games. That part was not an exaggeration. After running for cover in consecutive games, Pipkins ended his football career.

"Luwane was in shape from playing basketball all summer, and conditioning is our thing," Goodwin said. "Those guys didn't do that. They didn't do the things they needed to do to be ready to play football. Luwane was out there playing suicide. Every time he touched the ball, in two seconds they were right there."

"It didn't work out," Pipkins said. "We didn't have a line, but it wasn't just that. It was like everyone was loving losing. I can't stand losing."

Something to prove

Pipkins did not put Bogan on the basketball map.

Goodwin brought the notion of winning with speed and toughness to Bogan in the 2007-08 season, and the Bengals quietly won the Red-South title in 2009-10 — the first of four consecutive seasons in which Simeon won the Class 4A title.

Despite his Englewood roots and grammar school reputation, Pipkins chose Bogan instead of Simeon. In hindsight, all parties involved believe it was the right call.

Offensive freedom and defensive harassment highlight what Pipkins does best, and he no longer is burdened by trying to draw a scholarship offer.

DePaul, Loyola, Illinois-Chicago, Bradley and UMass have offered, and a number of high-major coaches will be watching closely on the offseason circuit.

"I just want to go to a school where I can play and it would fit my playing style," Pipkins said.

The competitor in him is head-to-toe, though, and a high-major offer is recognition of greatness.

Yes, he wants to use basketball as a vehicle to "experience a new life and take my daddy out of Englewood too."

Being the best guard in the city is nice, but it's already proven.

Being ranked behind Marian Catholic's Tyler Ulis and Stevenson's Jalen Brunson is stuck in his craw.

"I always want to be the best," Pipkins said. "They are giving more hype to Tyler Ulis and Jalen Brunson than they are to me. It is stuck in my head; I know I can be better than them if I put the work in."

Luwane Pipkins file
High school: Bogan. Class: Junior. Position: Guard. Height: 5-10. College: Undecided. Numbers: 27 points, 5 steals, 4 assists per game, 90 percent FTs, 46 percent 3s.

'INSTANT REPLAY' Pipkins will be featured during a segment on WGN-Ch. 9's "Instant Replay" at 9:40 p.m. Sunday. If you miss it, watch the video at prepsplus.com.

Maybe he should be. We couldn't use 27 points, 5 steals, 4 assists per game, 90 percent FTs, 46 percent 3s.?

The previous posts were about UMass 5'9 guard Chaz Williams. UMass has offered Pipkins.

Why should we care about a PG that doesn't play here and another one we aren't interested in?

I mentioned Chaz Williams because some folks were doubting that a 5-11 guard could help us.

I'm guessing the other poster mentioned the other guard because he thought some might find the story interesting. I guess I don't see what the harm was. If you don't want to read it, there isn't a gun at your head forcing you to read it.

Maybe we should have segued into another Derrick vs. Dawson post, though. That would have been timely and full of interesting new debate!

Sultan, you and I are usually reasonably on the same page. But you're wrong on this. Who the hell made you moderator of the entire site? If you can do a better job than the actual moderators, start your own effen site.

I'm not the moderator nor have I complained to the moderator.

I just figure if you are going to post irrelevant information, I might as well post irrelevant commentary on said information.

Seems like Garrett may have headed back to Milwaukee based on some of his twitter posts.  I can tell he definitely wants to play for MU but the roster needs to be sorted out.  If Harris doesn't come to MU, does that mean we have an extra space for Garrett?

With Harris we are oversigned by 1. In order to make room for Garrett we would need two to drop out...which is possible. I've heard transfer rumors about every single returning player and decommit rumors about most of the recruits. I don't think any of them are worth the paper they are written on...but you should always be recruiting.
