I know a girl who got into UW with an 18 on her ACT back in '05... not exactly a 9 but I'm pretty sure you get a 20 for writing your name correctly on the exam.....

Not sure how facetious you were being but a score of 20 is 49th percentile nationally.

Out of state, right?  They'll do anything for those extra tuition dollars.  Believe they still have the lowest percentage of in-state students of any public school in the nation.

At 34%, not even the largest in UW System.  (Superior has over half of their students from Minnesota.)

They are about #15 among large national publics.

Interesting, and a nice improvement.  Think it was in the 40%'s a decade or so ago.

Then you are feeding us lies.  Sorry, I got wait-listed with a much higher score in 2000.

I actually believe it is West Virginia.

There are factors which minimize the weight of an ACT score, (documented learning disabilities being one of the most common), but without a unusual circumstance, there is no way an at-large student with a 19 was accepted into Madison in 2005.

Could have...special talent...underrepresented demographic group...outstanding extracurriculars or community service.  I agree it is unlikely, but it's not completely impossible.

Here's another good policy. Don't follow 16 year olds on Twitter. Maybe because I'm not active on twitter, I think the whole phenomenon is strange.

I understand that it comes off as voyeuristic, but I would compare it to watching Hard Knocks or Behind Marquette Basketball (or whatever that mini-series a few years ago was called).

Do I care about 90% of the stupid things high school recruits post to twitter? No. Do I care about the vast majority of things posted by the people I follow on Twitter? No.  Am I interested when a recruit announces their final list of schools on Twitter? Yes.  Am I interested when an MU player posts pictures of a recent road trip or practice? Yes.

+1.

We also don't know the GPA and the trend of the GPA throughout high school.

Hey me too (many, many extracurriculars), with a very high GPA.  Still got wait listed.  I have serious doubts that she was being honest.  My friend that went to MU with me from my HS had better grades than me, well above a 20 on his ACT.  Also, he was wait listed and then rejected.

I mean, I guess it is possible, but I am highly doubtful that a 19 gets anyone into Madison without some unreal circumstances.

It wasn't a 19... it was an 18.... and I'm positive that's what she got... she met with the guidance counselor many many times b/c it's where she wanted to go.  I can't remember how long it took before she found out but she eventually got in for the Fall semester.
