Without Mayo hitting that 3, what would the board look like this morning?    Because for 39:54, MU was going to lose, Buzz would have been dumb, and a whole lot of people would have been doing a whole lot of crying.

Winning conference road games is tough.   If Mayo misses that shot, everybody would have forgotten how good STjr looked, how clutch Jake was, how Dawson looked solid (alright, NERS would have made another hundred posts making it impossible to forget that one).    It would have been all about how bad Todd had looked all night before that shot, how Jamil Wilson still makes dumb decisions, how Buzz still can't coach, etc.

One shot.   May(o) have changed the whole season.

I hope that's not right.  I had noticed Steve the entire game and said to both chick and my kid that we generally looked better throughout the game. Finally  passed a good test.

GooooMarquette

Keep winning, and that's the shot of the season.  Stop winning, and it's just a really nice shot.

I'm optimistic that we can do the former.

Actually, it already had started with this gem posted in the game thread with plenty of time left:

MU lost?  I'm stunned.  All we have to do is win the BET.  Easy since we can't win a road game. Go Bob Dukiet2.0

You are probably right, but I thought they played some of their best stretches of basketball this season during regulation time last night.  I actually enjoyed watching them (regardless of outcome).  There have been very few games this season where I have thought that.

The game thread is loaded with stupid comments like these.

I agree, MURFC.   That is my point.   I was watching the game last night, even while we were losing, and thinking that the team was looking decent, that Dawson looked good, how great it was to see STjr playing like we remembered he could, how Jake has turned into a contributor for this team after being written off by many.    And I would have thought that even if we lost.

Up until that game Pomeroy had us like 320th in luck in he country.  When we were down with a minute to go I remember thinking how unlucky this team has been...

- We play good offense versus X and they hit everything
- We play good defense versus Butler and we can't hit anything
- We play decent offense against G'Town and decent defense against them and the two guards hit wild shots with the shot clock winding down

Our luck had to change sooner or later.  FYI, even after that game we are the 299th luckiest team in the country.

Both were to force OT, we won both times, and at least the first time it sort of kick-started the squad.

Yep, totally agree, it was fun to watch.  I was just saying "you are probably right" about a truckload of crazies/trolls would have been on here crying and pouting had Mayo not hit that shot.

With Marquette down 4, I was actually talking with my friends on the tweeters and IRL about how nice it was to watch this team play during the game. For once it looked like a team rather than a mess. Dawson really opened up some opportunities inside.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

I hope the board wouldn't have gone off the rails. I was prepared to be disappointed by a loss, but had definitely been encouraged by how good the offense looked with Taylor and Dawson. I don't know how you could not have seen the progress. We may have lost, but I think I would have left that game (in a loss) feeling so much better about our team than if we HAD pulled out that Butler debacle at the end (i.e., before OT).

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

That was a good look though with a great play.  He misses it I would've been upset at Mayo and that's all.  Unlike the ASU game where we had a terrible last second look, the ball in the wrong player's hands, and everybody looked lost.

I agree.  Naturally we're used to losing some games this season, but it was a refreshing game even if we would have lost.  First one that really had me legitimately excited.  For me, nothing feels better than guys getting a real chance to play and making the most of it.  Seeing Steve and John help us win was the best part.

jsheim

This is what we get this season...a team not gelled...lots of anxious moments...a mere hope at a tourny bit...every game we re-formulate what needs to happen to get that bid.

Not only is Mayo's shot edgy...there was a 3 by jake at the end of the Butler game that looked like a bad miss but he was fouled...hits 3 ft's and we're up by 1...instead OT on 2fts with a different foul a bit later.

if we had beat Butler...there would be even a different tenor...maybe a bit too much confidence.

I am going to enjoy this season for what it is...not great basketball...hoping for a miracle bid at the end...and clinging to the radio late in the evening.  :)

Because as your signature says....   You seem to be especially adept at what I would call "keep it in perspective folks" posts.  I appreciate it.

My one criticism would be you missed mentioning the "referees cost us the game" thread that would have appeared.  I probably wold have been on that one moaning about Starks getting a foul called against him by MU after Starks traveled and landed up out of bounds.

/Notice how I snuck some bitching into this thread?

/I should balance that out.  MU no longer has a losing record against Georgetown as we are now 8-8 all time against them.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

tower912

Starks traveled, but was actively engaged in a double team with hands reaching for the ball.   Tough to get that call on the road.   The weird shot clock violation/alternate possession thing damn near cost us the game, too.   But there had been so many calls, and so much contact.....that gift over the back call on Georgetown against Gardner on the free throw was a weak call that went our way.    I just don't expect to get borderline calls on the road.

I expected us to lose last night, but by a fairly thin margin.  I would not have gone off the rails if Mayo had missed that 3.  However, only beat Seton Hall by 1 at home (although the score is a bit misleading).  That is a game you simply expect to win every time, even though SHU is a pretty decent team and I can see us losing at their place.  If we miss a late free throw and lose that game the "should Buzz be fired?" thread gets rolling fast.

IIRC, neither team built a lead of more than 7 points.  I can remember thinking that Georgetown had just buried us with a run and checking the score and Georgetown was up by just 7.

This is why perception and fandom is so interesting.  We look at it as Mayo hitting the one shot.  Guess what G'Town fans look at....if only he had made the free throw or not missed the dunk?  Of course, the reality is that every play counts, but folks focus on a few, but its all on how people filter the view based on their fandom which makes it fun.

After sleeping on it, I'm still not sure I didn't just see two fairly ho-hum teams play against each other one won and one didn't.  The positive news is obviously Taylor and Buzz finally playing someone else at point guard, but the team still looks like it has a long way to go.

Fragile indeed.

Easy call in slow motion - not so much in real-time. I think a vast majority of officials would have called the foul rather than traveling.

Disagree 100% the announcers saw it, while they were sitting down in chair at mid-court.  Referee within 15 feet of that action standing, staring at the action = easy call.
