Couple things:

1) Can you imagine 3 more years of strength and conditioning training under Todd Smith for Deonte??!  Wow.

2) Put this dunk in the Top 10 I recall seeing in my life - even crazier - he probably should have been given and And 1 on that as the defender was still moving, and set up even outside the circle.  His lift off point going off of 2 feet was insane - I'd estimate just 5 feet in from free throw line.

You simply cannot coach what we saw from DB today - the kid is going to be an absolute star.  A real chance to be a 3 and done player...see some Charles Barkley in DB.

He's gonna be Jae-ripped next year.

It was a nice dunk, but I'm not sure I can even put it in my top 3 or 4 for Marquette, let alone other college hoops, NBA, etc.  But yes, it was a nice dunk.

Really?  As a former avid dunker myself (I think you may have witnessed some of mine prior to shoot arounds at the Bradley Center back from 1993-1997) - I can attest that what Burton did was SICK.  I'd put his left hand windmill the other day in MU's top 3 that I recall seeing in my life.  But today's?  Easily best dunk I've seen an MU player make.

Can you recall a more memorable, powerful, better dunk by an MU player??  I don't recall Wade ever posterizing someone to the extent Burton did today...perhaps my memory fails me?

Agree totally - but Wade did have a beauty against Kentucky. That one was so great tho because of the quickness DW displayed to get to the hoop.

Yup, really.  Part of it for me is the moment.  This was Samford, in garbage time, they looked like they couldn't wait to get on the plane.  Look, it was a very athletic play, very nice dunk, I put the animated gif together for a reason...I thought it was very cool.

There's just no way on planet earth I would say top 10 dunk I have ever seen, and there are MU dunks that I rate higher, largely because of the opponent, the importance, etc.  Just my two cents.

AZWarrior

Wade had one where he drove the right baseline, went airborne while on the right side of the basket, went under the rim, did a 180 while under the rim, and then dunked the ball with his right hand from the left side of the rim.  I was sitting about 7 rows in behind the basket.  It was truly incredible.
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

This is probably the Wade dunk you were thinking about.  He rebounds the ball, falls down, runs the floor, gets the flush and one foul over #1 Kentucky on MU's way to the Final Four.

That was fun.  Certainly a more "important" dunk, and put a big exclamation point on that game.  More "impressive"...nope, but that was a great dunk in MU history.

DJO had a great one against UWGB that made #1 on ESPN highlights that day.  DJO vs UCONN.  DJ vs Villanova all were a bunch of fun.  Jimmy had a few nice ones as did Vander.

There's one I have in mind that I would put at the top, let's see if anyone else gets it....it's not from the Buzz era as a hint.

Gotta give Crean credit for coachin' up DWade, enablin' him to complete that dunk. Musta been the learned karate moves or fightin' off those tacklin' dummies in practice since #3 only had a 12 inch vertical when he arrived on campus.

I actually love the girth. Legendary status has it's privileges...and that dude is a LEGEND!

4everwarriors

No question on legend status. One of the smartest basketball players I've had the pleasure of watchin'. BLT was a thing of beauty.
In its proper context, I think girth has its place.

This definitely was a defining dunk in MU history - and a very nice dunk for sure.  I don't agree that a dunk's quality in and of itself, however, is diminished by the opposition.  The Samford player was probably a 6'6"+ dude, standing outside the circle, and Burton elevates off two, cocks the ball back with one hand....and throws it down with insane authority.  An absolute definition of a poster dunk.  DJO had some nice one's as well as you mention - but you gotta look at the takeoff point on Burton's and the power.

Can't think of the dunk you are referring to...put the clip up already!

Wow.  You will see the highlight at some point.  Burton had one of the best dunks I've ever seen from anybody not named Deandre Jordan, Blake Griffin, or LeBron James.

Some guys named Michael Jordan, Julius Erving and Dominique Wilkins might have stumbled across a nice dunk every now and then, too. Even if you are too young to have ever seen them live, maybe you caught a highlight or two on the NBA Oldies Channel ...

Just as a follow up, the dude he dunked on/ T-Bagged is 6'9", 230lbs., and the force of Burton damn near made the guy fall over...pretty impressive - not like he dunked on a 6'2" white dude like me.   ;D

Lazar's dunk vs West Virginia was awesome and made the SC top 10, maybe even took the top spot. DJO's put back one handed dunk was also pretty awesome, and Buzz started dancing afterwards.

Agree on Zar's but it wasn't nearly as explosive/powerful as what we saw from Burton today.  And I LOVED the DJO put back dunk, but I can speak from experience - a put back dunk is actually really easy, as you don't even have to take the ball up with you - just time your jump well and see where ball appears it's going to come off rim..and throw it down.  But to do what Burton did today - just another level of dunk - especially for a kid no taller than 6'4".  I had a 38" vertical while at MU, and I couldn't dream of doing what Burton did today..and I could do a lot of different dunks, tomahawks, 180s, 360s - but could never throw down like what I saw Burton do today...

Not one of the best by any means, but Todd's steal and finish on WVU two years ago is memorable.  Really wanted that game and it was an awesome play.  I'm sure Dominic James had some big ones I can't remember.  He always had the trademark oops & reverse jams.  Impressive for a player his height.

Great dunk.  But I think he is referring do a different one.  One of the best dunks I've seen by an MU player (Burton's is now up there.)  The Wade dunk that comes to mind and the one he is referring to is Wade driving baseline takes off from about 8 ft out and powers it home.

Ellenson Guerrero

Deonte earned the No. 2 spot on SC tonight. Should have beat out Russ Smith but Russ got the bonus points for a 6 ft guy going against Randall.

That was one of the happiest I've ever been after a victory and Buzz two-stepping over to the announcers table right in front of the student section was the icing on the cake.

I blacked out shortly after.

Only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is Doc's one handed alley-oop throw down vs Louisville in his last year.   Highlight play of my four years at MU.

ChicosBailBonds

Here are just a few from the local area just in this year alone...I guess we're dunk spoiled here in L.A.

Some local guy named Blake something Griffin  :D seems to have one every other game.

Over the years some incredible ones here locally by Westbrook at UCLA, Kobe, Shannon Brown, etc, etc...I guess I've just seen too many of them over the years.  Hell, I remember Harold Miner at USC do some incredible things over the years.

Burton's....was very very nice.  Looking forward to seeing more of that in the future.
