So, we talked about this game yesterday being the worst offensively efficient game in Marquette advanced stats history (1997-98):  http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=40603.msg532021#msg532021

Chicos asked if any other team has ever had such a low single game ORating (54.1). The answer is there have been quite a few, but no high major basketball schools on the worst 100 games list since 1997-98. (MU's game is just outside the low range):  http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/stats?season1=1997&season2=2013&conf=&team=&stat=points_possession_avg&low=1

This is the fourth worst offensively efficient game this season in all of Division 1, again with no high majors on the list of 100 stinkers:  http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/stats?season1=2013&season2=2013&conf=&team=&stat=points_possession_avg&low=1

Some half full posters who I respect are saying remember the Cuse or Florida games last year...well, this game was 32% worse than the Cuse game and 49% worse than the Florida game offensively efficient-wise to put that concern into perspective.

Okay...some good news and bad news.  In Pomeroy, MU is #7 in the nation defensively.  Yesterday, MU was outstanding defensively holding tOSU to a 81.3 offensive rating, according to Statsheet.  However, to put that into perspective, based on available statistical game history that goes back to 2000, MU has NEVER lost a game playing that well defensively.  The only game close to that was the Florida State Disney Old Spice game where MU lost at the end after playing a bunch of games in that week leading up.

OSU sagged off DeWilson yesterday with their two guard, putting Craft on Jake or Todd when they played man. This also allowed them to double down on Gardner or Otule which caused turnovers as they had no outlets.  MU's scheme was not prepared...no one flashing (Taylor or Burton) or weak side cutting (Jamil), with Craft covering the outlet for the shooters.  Only an east-west game with no dribble penetration or motion through.  When DeWilson has the ball continuously in his hands with six seconds left on the shot clock, you get what MU got yesterday.  A forced shot, mostly a bad trey was the result.

I love Buzz...I think he is one of the best in the game.  But, he does this every year early season and gradually the team progresses like they will this year.  He chose not to take the early practices but to stick to previous year's practice schedule and with the Boot Camp.  Most others took advantage of this, and teams like the Badgers even had their Canadian trip.  And, it shows as this team was not at all prepared yesterday offensively and others are way ahead as we see in these statistical anomalies.  This one is solely on Buzz as he, himself stated (which is also why I love the guy).

Thanks for the workup.  I didn't think a high major had done that badly, you definitely confirmed that.

I guess Buzz (who I also love) must be truly obsessive-compulsive. I know about the schedule, the multiple letters, etc. If he is so dedicated to how he thinks a season should progress that he will allow a stinker like this to be a "learning opportunity" then I guess I will wait and see. Can't really complain about his track record to date.

Here is the Crean Craptacular list.  DePaul, WMU, St. Louis games lead the unhit parade.

Wait, Maybe I'm way behind on this.  Teams were allowed to start practice a month or two earlier this year (don't remember how much earlier), and Buzz didn't do that?  For a guy that likes to teach guys not to waste any moment, this seems unreal.

Maybe I misunderstood?

Yes they can start earlier, but similar number of practices.  JayBee can fill us in more specifically...see article on bottom.  Buzz chose to keep his standard schedule going through Boot camp.

As for the Badgers, they did the Canadian tour in August that MU did a number of years ago, getting in five games: http://host.madison.com/sports/columnists/jim_polzin/badgers-men-s-basketball-uw-completes-trip-to-canada-with/article_a3103830-7da1-5eea-bbb0-4c2d253d6e50.html

Not much comparison, those numbers were far better.  The DePaul game was year one.

Yesterday was epic dumpster fire bad...an all timer

Indeed.  Was he flying around recruiting at that time?
