Great for Lockett. I remember watching him have a very solid summer league. It has been a pretty good off season for MU hoops.

Great for Lockett.  FWIW, EPSN's take on the signing

Lockett's chances to stick with Kings
By Nick Borges | ESPN.com

According to The Sacramento Bee, the Sacramento Kings announced the signing of rookie free agent guard Trent Lockett on Wednesday. No contract details were given, however it's likely a one-year deal with no salary protection.

Lockett, out of Marquette, averaged 7.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists with the team during summer league action in July.

The Kings already have six guards -- Jimmer Fredette, Ray McCallum, Ben McLemore, Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Thornton, Greivis Vasquez -- under contract, so making the opening night team is highly unlikely. The Kings will probably hold onto Lockett right up until the end of preseason so they can allocate him to their D-League team.

Regardless of whether he's on the opening night roster, it's awesome for Trent to get this opportunity. As was pointed out, not a lot of guys that average 7 ppg as a senior get a shot at the NBA. Lockett embodied hard work, basketball smarts, and intangibles. I'm glad to see at least one team acknowledging that guys like him have value even at the pro level.

Me, too. I would like to see something that verifies a guaranteed contract. I just looked again and could find no mention of such a deal online anywhere -- except in the MUScoop walk-on's post.

A 2 year deal w/a team option for year 2 would be consistent with what I've heard. Sounds like insidetheleague has good info on this.

I'm not saying the report is false. I'd just like to see it reported somewhere. It's such a long shot to give a guaranteed contract to a lightly regarded, undrafted, free agent, rookie. But it does happen.

I have seen "partial guarantees."  If that means one year, or something less than that, I don't know.

mixINaWILSON

Hey CTWarrior, you're right.  Locket shouldn't even show up because he doesn't stand a chance of making the team.

If it matters here is another article from cowbell kingdom.  They are related to the Truhoop part of ESPN so they are pretty legit.  (No mention of contract details)

Sounds like they like the fact he could pick up the offensive and defensive sets and is willing to work hard.

Great news and great for Lockett.  I have to say, if he plays in the NBA, I will be very happy and very surprised.  My NBA evaluation skills will have to be considered less than terrible if that comes to pass (and maybe signing a contract is enough to say I have no skills - but I've been pretty good in the past on MU players - so this one is perplexing for me still).

Congrats to fellow Golden Valleyian Trent Lockett. Got a 2-yr deal from Sacramento w/ a partial guarantee. Must've impressed them in Vegas.

Just wait until Davante is drafted next year.  This board is going to have a massive head-a-splosion.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Oh... I don't know.... let's say there's these two guys, and one happens to have been carrying the other's prophecy in his signature line for over 2 years now.  The head-a-splode won't be because Davante was drafted... it's because these two guys foretold of it long ago.

And to this day, there are still those who believe that at least one of these guys was being ironic.

respectfully...I actually think it validates Blue's decision.   Objectively, forget the emotion of wanting Blue to stay another year, who would have thought at year end Lockett was more likely to sign an NBA contract than Blue given the year's performances and the run in the tourney?    I agree with the persective that VB staying another year only would have made his chances to make the NBA much stronger, but, in his mind.....if a player like Trent can get a whiff at it...how can a dude so confident in his abilities like Blue not think he can as well at this point in his life?   I guess we shall see if VB gets invited to and sticks with an NBA team through camp.    I completely share the complete and pleasant surprise of Trent getting a shot.   I loved his attitude and work ethic at MU and he only got stronger as the year progressed.   His senior day speech will always remain a highlight of the season to me.
there's no emotion involved...it seems to me that vander didn't listen/do as buzz (and company) suggested, and i think that was a major mistake.  guys like trent, jimmy, zar, wes, etc. don't have that in common with him.  i also have a huge issue with vander essentially making the public statement that he felt his stock was as high as it could get...that would be scary to me as an nba scout/coach.

Great! Lockett seems to be a nice guy and we know he's a hard worker. He deserves to have lots of folks rooting for him.

After this signing we need to reevaluate and appreciate the overall prestige, reputation and well earned renown that the MU Basketball Program has  developed within NBA circles in their ability to produce quality young men and proffessionals to play in the NBA.

MU in recent years has no peer in this in college hoops in churning out Pro prospects whose games and makeup and character and toughness and coachabilities and high bball IQ feel and respect for the game, the grind it takes to stay 4 years balancing academics, weight training practice and games is impressive as a longtime (and long winded some might say) MU FAN.

Not even Duke, Kansas or even Kentucky are markedly better than MU at this every since Crean came and started the culture building and took a flyer on Dwyane Wade. I say all these grandiose things because IF TRENT LOCKETT CAN GET SIGNED BY THE KINGS muchless Dwight Buycks who both were bit role players here and he gets a two year deal..... you know the Grace of God and good fortunes or kharma is over this program!

MUHoopsFan2

This phenomenal to me because the one guy I expected to light up the NBA on someone's 8 man rotation Dominic James has so much has gotten any contract love at all and to this day I feel he is as good as many guys I see now in the NBA. IF Nate Robinson, Isiah Thomas and Wil Bynum and Ish Smith and other cats like that can play in the league DJO, JEREL AND DOMINIC can play in it!

But perhaps their time will come. After all they ARE MARQUETTE.....right? But congratulations to Trent Locett the one and done transfer from ASU. It causes me to wonder did he get a serious look on his work for MU for 1 year and ride the wave of their ascent to prominence in turning out Pro prospects, or was it from what he did in 3 years at ASU?

I would say in a what have you have you done for me or shown me lately talent evaluate process if maybe the former moreso than the latter. MU has taken JUCO transfers and transfers in general and each were better off for themselves Professionally then they were before they got here.

Excellent news for Trent and for MU.  Another solid citizen makes the NBA based on hard work, maturity, and teamwork.  I liked how the kings tried him at PG in summer league and while he made a few rusty type mistakes that anyone would make when they haven't played the position in a while, he proved immediately that he sees the court well and has a great understanding of the game.  His passing and positioning and court sense were worlds ahead of most of the other summer league players. Defensively he can guard 1 and 2 and sometimes 3 which is also a bonus.  The teamwork is most important.  He'll never be an NBA star, but he'll always be a solid player off the bench.

I really view Lockett as a poor mans Wesley Matthews and think he will find himself a place in the league.  He has the work ethic, the size and the drive.  He just has to get the chance and not let the nerves get to him.

Problem with James :  He still can't shoot, and he never could pass.  See link for his stats on 2nd rate Euro teams.  What good is a 5'10 guy who can't shoot?
