The top player in their 2013 class is arguably Toby Hegner, a WI kid. Played travel ball with Matt Thomas (Iowa State FR). Tall traditional (6'10" ish).

Redshirt freshman (from 2012 class) Isaiah Zierden (from Minnesota) isn't new to the program, but didn't play last year. He could be nice for them in another year.

But.. they'll not only lose the coaches kid.. but Gibbs will be gone as will another senior - Ethan Wragge (Minnesota). Wragge is a 6'7" kid who came off the bench to shoot 45% on 3's and made more treys than McDermott.

It's a big year for Creighton.

The reality is they probably will continue to recruit the same types of kids they have in the past. It may be good enough for them to be a program that often feels like they have a chance to make the tournament at the beginning of the season, but I don't think they are going to all of a sudden bring in 'elevated interest' from higher profile guys.

They'll continue to go after guys like a 2014 JP Macura. Talented player who has interest from some* other high majors and may be a top 100 kid... but they are not going to consistently be fighting w/Georgetown or MU for recruits.

Good program, but I think there is a ceiling on it. (Being blunt but honest; I like the school a lot.)

I think it will be worse in the future than you paint.  My guess is McDermott leaves at the end of the season and CU will be going through a coaching transition.

From his perspective--his stock will never be higher.  In the four years before he arrived Creighton was four years removed from their last NCAA tournament. He's got them back into the NCAA 2 years in a row--and looks to have a good team this year.  His son will be gone, Creighton will be going through a big transition, and its going to be tougher to compete in the new Big East than it was in the MVC.

If he wants to leverage a big payday, this is going to be the year to do it.

Where is McDermott going to go?  I think a lot of BCS-type programs are going to be pretty leery of him considering he pretty much tanked at ISU.

I think JayBee is right.  He will stay at Creighton because that's his best option.  He will continue to recruit the same type of guys.  Time will tell if that works.

Maybe...but I don't think banking on his son's success will do much for his reputation as a coach. If he wants to make a jump to a better program, he will need to prove that he can succeed without his son. Creighton is in a major conference now, you have to be a pretty darn good coach to get a better job than that.

In a world where Steve Alford can wind up at a historically elite program in UCLA, I think there are more than few teams that might be willing take a look.

Especially when you could write off Iowa State a an aberration in an otherwise fine career. McDermott is 3-1 when it comes to turnarounds: taking D2 Wayne State from a .500 team to 26-6 (and only NCAA tournaments in school history).  Then took Northern Iowa to their first NCAA tournament since 1990, and his record there included only the 2nd, 3rd and 4th NCAA tournaments in school history.

Now at Creighton, he turned them around from 3 NITs and a CBI the four years before he arrived to what is likely 3 straight NCAAs.

Look at it this way--if McDermott takes CU to the Sweet 16, it will be the first for Creighton since 1974, and only the 3rd in the last 50 years.   If he gets them further it will be the school's best finish ever, and go a long way to making people forget Iowa State.

I have to think that entire track record is likely to get him at least mentioned in the coaching carousel in 2014.

McDermott is an Iowa native, and has spent his coaching career in the Iowa/Nebraska/Dakota area, and he already has arguably the best job in that area.  He's certainly not leaving for Iowa, Iowa State or Nebraska.  Minnesota is going to see what young Pitino for the next few years, and Kansas would hire someone better than McDermott if Self ever leaves.  He's well-compensated at Creighton, and he doesn't strike me as the mercenary type that would go after any job.  I guess you never know, but I don't see any reason to think he goes anywhere.

Why wouldn't McDermott to Iowa be a possibility after Fran's big run this season?

I just don't think Iowa would ever take a coach that didn't cut it at ISU.

Jeez, is the schedulemaker the same guy who's responsible for getting the website up and running?

MUMonster03

There is just a lot that goes into making the schedule, especially when so many of the schools don't have their own dedicated arenas. We share with NBA, Georgetown with NBA/NHL, St. Johns NBA/NHL, Villanova (for 3 games a year) NBA/NHL, and Seton Hall with NHL not to mention concerts, indoor motorsports, wrestling, and various other activities that all want these arena at certain times. Not sure where a lot of these schools stand on the hierarchy for scheduling but I'm sure they are at least behind the pro teams.

Was hoping today would be the day.  The schedule release will now get lost in the mania of nfl starting

It's 4:30 for all but three teams in the conference so I doubt it unless they're waiting till the end p the work day for MU and creighton as well

I'm sure if you keep hitting refresh on the new Big East website the new schedule will eventually load :)

There is also a rumor going around that the Big East may actually have some good teams  and players competing in Women's and Men's Soccer, Cross Country and Women's volleyball. Like they might be playing in matches and meets somewhere.

Schedule coming out today per ESPN and Georgetown will play Villanova at the end of the season.

What's your source?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

The various coaches polls.
In Men's soccer Creighton #2, Georgetown #11, St. Johns #23, Marquette #29. Women's soccer Georgetown and Marquette in top 25.
Women's Cross Country Providence ranked #1, Georgetown #6, Villanova #12.

The rest is just word of mouth
