Actually, the two worst "hate filled personal assaults" I've ever read on MUScoop were made by keefe early on in his posting history.  To his credit, keefe moved away from those types of posts.  I do remember brewcity being the target of some first rate vitriol in one of these early keefe posts, however.

I was unaware of the history between Keefe and Brew but it explains a lot. Still, racist, Nazi propagandist and hate monger are pretty harsh. If Keefe was worse (I'm having a hard time imagining anything worse) I apologize and stand corrected.

Maybe it's my advanced age, but I found Keefe's posts to be examples of one using hyperbole and satire to make his points.  Edgy, yeah, confrontational, yup, maybe even inflammatory.  But, I did not think his posts were racially motivated and I do not believe that he is a racist.  I'm not looking for a point by point analysis of his or Brew's or anyone's posts here.  Just giving you my take based on what I have read and know of the man.

You don't rise through the officer ranks in the USAF if you cannot demonstrate your ability to lead and relate to people of all colors and from all walks of life.

And you don't raise the kind of money he has for the global poor of various colors if you don't have a true concern for all of them regardless of race or creed.  I find the criticisms of his posts to be indicative of a politically correct few and I hope I speak for more of the posters here than they do.

I've exchanged messages with keefe in the past, and he's a solid guy and a great Marquette fan. This board is better with him. Hope he keeps posting here.

Wow!  Please don't go the Florida, Florida, Florida thread...if what Keefe posted bothers you this much, some of the comments in there will make your head explode.

Especially with your inability to process them

As rocky said .. 7 day ban, already expired.

Guys, in case you haven't noticed these past 6 years .. the moderation philosophy here?  Incredibly tolerant.  Besides spammers, I think we can count on one hand the number of people we've banned permanently.

The method to the madness is that we give people a lengthy amount of rope, and when they are at the end .. they get a time out.  Oh, the horror.  Someone can't use Scoop for a few days = waterboarding.   Always fun to read the umbrage, too.

By my count, over 2-3 years, keefe is on his 3rd incarnation after getting vacations and coming back as someone new.  I'd guess he's already here with a new name.  He'll tone it down for a while, maybe.

To be honest, I'd taken some advice I've given out many times before .. he was the one guy I had on ignore; shirking my moderating duties.   ;)  .. I had to unignore when his messages were "reported to moderator" by a bunch of posters in the Cohen thread.

I remember last November when keefe first popped up, and his use of the term "Mo" for Mormons and also for homosexuals.  Just a little over the top.

He's also added a lot to this board too.

I've exchanged pm's with him, and enjoyed our conversations. Seems like a very genuine guy.

Brew, I love much of what you write.  Was the first to compliment you for your prediction last year.  Your retribution thread was just a tiny bit over the top.  Racist... No.  Just over the top.

We've (including myself) all posted stupid sh1t here at times.  Chicos, Lenny, terror, Kenosha, brew, pakuni, stache....et al.  The only one that gets a pass is Legs for "doable"!  ;)

I hope Keefe returns....as Keefe.  Maybe tone it down a just a wee bit.  Besides, he's bringing the fancy pants 800 year old booze to Chicos' house for the upcoming scoop thanksgiving dinner.

In terms of Keefe's continued absence, he's likely in Alaska this week on a fishing trip....no mystery.  I look forward to his pics in the fishing thread.

By the way, what does it say about us or about keefe when we have a thread about him?

Keefe and I have had our run-ins.

While I'm not a fan of everything he posts, his PMs seem to be those of a well-thought and caring person.

He is Scoop's official crazy but lovable uncle.

By the way, what does it say about us or about keefe when we have a thread about him?

One of my favorite books ever is "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey. Keefe is the closest thing our loony bin known as Scoop has to Randall P McMurphy.

Everyone posting in keefe's defense seem to have had lengthy PM conversations with him. The problem with that mindset is most people, especially casual readers of the site (like recruits, their friends, and parents) will only see snapshots without any context as to the character or background of the poster.

One of the problems is that whether keefe is racist or not is completely irrelevant. What is relevant is that when mods close a thread and his response is Nazi jackboots and communist propaganda, he is posting that for everyone to see. So the mother of a recruit that doesn't know anything else about the site clicks into a thread and sees all the garbage pics he has an incessant need to post and rather than PMing questions to him as to why he does it, they simply see him as a racist prick and if the mods aren't censoring it, apparently Marquette fans are cool with that (after all, MU is in the site's name and the clear topic of discussion).

Anyone who thinks this doesn't matter, remember that one of Sandy Cohen's teammates posted in the thread that keefe filled with his New Yorker drivel that came out as anti-Native American. If Dakota saw those posts, my guess is Cohen and his family saw them as well. Maybe it's just me, but I don't want the first impression recruits have of Marquette fans to be stuff that derides their race.

So is keefe the crazy uncle? Sure...he's the crazy uncle with the rebel flag flying while he sits out on his porch on 27th and Atkinson blasting David Allan Coe's Underground Album with a bottle of moonshine half empty at his feet. Maybe none of it is inherently racist, but if you can't see the potential for trouble your eyes are closed.

Don't know what happened between you and Keefe, but I think it speaks volumes that so many posters are in touch with him off line and think so well of him.  As for recruits or parents of same, don't you think that the Cohen's have been following Scoop for a while now, not just during the last few weeks of Sandy's recruitment/commitment process?  Doesn't seem to have impacted the process and I'm sure they and other potentials are wise enough to know that every fan base has a diverse population. As for your last paragraph, hyperbole r you.

Where did you go?  I'm leaving for Alaska next week for 10 days with the family.  Welcome back.

Just PM'd you the details but we spent 10 days in Gustavus/Glacier Bay. It's further south, near Juneau, but a spectacular place. Caught lots of 40 lb kings, 100 lb halibut, and random ling cod, rockfish, and sharks. I air freighted back almost 500 lbs of fish which I am giving to Northwest Harvest, a local food bank.

You and yours will love Alaska. It is still a mystical place.

I can't wait.  Looking forward to no internet, good family time, no calls from the office or programmers.  Just some clean air, nature and fun.

Never had a PM with him.  Initially he annoyed me with his hyperbole, but then I came to look forward to his commentary, as I do, quite frankly to yours, brewcity77.  He is clearly an interesting bloke, and hope he hangs around.

While pedantic at times, he is seldom dull. I for one saw nothing racist in the New Yorker post and place people whose panties got in a wad with those scolds who feel obliged to find criticism in the least thing. I lament that we have lost the ability to laugh at ourselves and some take umbrage at the most trivial of items.

I think that Susan Sontag said it best;

"He wasn't bashful about showing himself to be feverishly erudite, … terminally droll, and a wizard phrasemaker."
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
