While on the subject of Southern California, question for Chicos.  Will be in CA for the NCAA Men's Volleyball Final Four next week Thursday and Saturday.  I have a friend who is living in Cypress, CA in Orange County for the next month for work and he offered to let me stay there.  Is the drive going to be too much of a hassle if the matches will (most likely) be starting around 6:00 PM at Pauly Pavilion?  Mapquest was giving me 36 miles and 56 minutes with traffic, but my guess is it'll be worse than the 56 minutes at that time out there.

I know Cypress very well.      You are not likely to make it in 56 minutes if you are driving solo.  I would argue you need to leave more like at 4:00pm to be safe because you are going to be hit a couple of different ways on the 605, 105 and 405 (or even if you take the 10).  That's a rough time of day....if you have more than one person, you can ride the 105 Carpool lane and 605, which will help.
