Brad Autry:

If the only voices you are listening to are saying what you want to hear...good chance they don't care about you in any way. Truth is hard.

Hmmm wonder what this is about...

What good can come from putting that on Twitter?

swoopem

I highly doubt he is talking about Vander if that's what you're hinting at. Also I sure hope he is smart enough to not bash a player publicly because that isn't good for anyone.

Autry always has motivational type tweets.
Bring back FFP!!!

Niv Berkowitz

How is that NOT directed at Vander when you consider the timing? It's either directed at him, or, Autry is a complete idiot for not realizing that's how it would be interpreted.

I think this could be harmful for recruting.  I don't care how much the coaching staff disagreed with his decision up front.  Once Blue made his decision our staff should nothing but supportive of him in their public comments.

You never know when some team is going to use that as negative recruiting against us--all it takes is some opposing coach to get inside some kids head using this as evidence that the MU staff doesn't really care about players as people.

Hilar!

shoothoops

By itself, I don't necessarily agree with the quote.

Some people may tell you what you want to hear because they don't care about you.  However, some others may care about you very much but may be unable to give a different, objective opinion that would disagree with you or cause conflict with you.  It doesn't mean those people are bad people or don't care about you.  They may care about you a great deal.  It's always good to get a wide variety of feedback on any topic.

I think Autry, Wainwright, Chew, and Williams are hurt by Van's decision.  We're all human, we all say stuff we shouldn't, we all make mistakes. They put so much time and effort into these kids, and it just takes some outside persuasion to change their minds on what would be a more reasonable decision.

This could work more productively for the Buzz.  Maybe the chip is now bigger because he wants to prove to Van he made a mistake and by getting to a Final Four that would be the icing on the cake.  Who knows.

Exactly.  Really dumb even if it's not specifically about Vander.

Agreed completely. It was either a foolishly mistimed comment or it was specifically targeted at a guy our staff is supposed to be supporting and developing. Even if you don't agree with Van's decision, that doesn't mean you try to publicly take him down a peg.

Yep.

This. It wasn't the right decision, but the cats out of the bag, he can't come back, so what's the point of making a scene? All you can do now is support him and wish him the best.

Not joking at all.  If I were recruiting against MU right now, I would make sure that the following statement was made:

"They'll tell you when they recruit you that they're all 'grind together, shine together'.  But take a look at how quickly they turned on Vander Blue when he wanted to go pro. If you play for us and decide to go pro, we'll support you in your decision."

I certainly hope so. An ambiguous tweet from an assistant coach could be harmful to recruiting. What else are the voices telling you guys (see what I did there)?

I highly doubt an opposing coach goes into the minutia of MU's assistant's twitter.

There are 1 million things you can do to help strengthen a relationship with a potential recruit. Telling that recruit about a competing school's twitter is pretty far down the list.

When Marquette fails to land any McD All-Americans in the next few years, we'll all know that this Autry tweet is the reason behind it  ::)

That argument will be worthless when Vander fails to make the NBA.  It will only prove the coaches were right to try to talk him out of going pro.
Have some patience, FFS.

avid1010

i don't see any reason for the tweet, but to think it will hurt recruiting is a joke.

i'd be more worried about a comment like, "mu says they have nba contacts and a solid reputation, but they supported vander in his choice to go pro and he wasn't even drafted."

none of this will make one bit of a difference with recruits...although vander getting drafted would help mu.

At one point, I thought that Illini fans were the most paranoid college basketball fan base out there. Unfortunately, I think MU has surpassed them. Sad.

This. It's a lame tweet to publicly drop on the guy, but I don't think it extends much beyond that. Only way it'd hurt recruiting is if a recruit already has a relationship with Autry that takes a bit of a hit.

RawdogDX

Make a scene?  Turn on him?  How are you people such drama queens?  You are acting like he posted a pic of a vander voodoo doll with pins in it's knee.

I think continuing to give good advice to someone despite the fact that there is nothing to gain from it is an honorable trait.  And that message may have been directed at vander, but it is something that the rest of the team should hear.  And you'll notice that it frames him and the coaching staff in the 'We do care about you' camp.
